A list of puns related to "Southern Accents"
I just adore the old southern accent (rolled Spanish/Italian R, non palatalization of de/te/ti, dark L sound (velarization), the letters e and i pronounced like in Spanish/Italian, the pronoun โtuโ conjugated in second person, local vocabulary and expressions) and since I would like to move to Pelotas (in the far southern coast of RS) from North America, I figured why not learn this endearing accent? Iโm just curious if people would take me seriously, haha?! Would it generate any negative reactions or mockery?
Also, I want to note that I love all the different accents in Portuguese, the global lusophone varieties make the language a beautiful rainbow, that we all contribute to. The accents of the Brazilian Northeast, Florianรณpolis, Portugal, the Azores, Angola, Uruguayan border Portuguese, etc, they are all beautiful sonnets of gorgeous sonority!
Thanks for reading! Big hugs to you all!
Iโm from a non-English speaking country and my partner is an American from the South. He usually doesnโt speak with an accent, but ever since I heard him talk in his Alabama accent to his family on the phone I canโt get enough of it. And when I hear other people that have it I find myself thinking itโs attractive.
Iโm halfway through season 7 and it seems like nobody has a noticeable southern accent anymore, except for Maggie, Eugene and Morgan. Negan has only a slight accent, and Rickโs an Darylโs have definitely faded over the seasons. Is there any reason for this? I really liked the accents in this show, it made it feel cooler and more gritty to me.
Sorry for any spelling/grammar errors!
Single/Taken/Complicated: Single Seeking Relationship/Friends/Squish/Other: Relationship, but Iโd rather start out as friends. I also donโt care if youโre asexual, Iโm a bit sex averse and fine avoiding that
Romantic Orientation: Heteroromantic
Gender: Male
Pronouns: He/Him
Age: 19
Height/Build: 5โ11โ, pretty skinny
Physical Description: Iโm white, but a bit tan. I have blue eyes and wavy, curly in some spots brown hair (been kind of letting it grow). Iโm clean-shaven and weigh almost exactly 140 pounds. I also wear glasses.
Personality Description: Iโm a pretty awkward person. Iโm always slightly anxious about things and feel that I sometimes care too much about people responding. Besides that, Iโd like to think Iโm a pretty caring person, though introverted. I tend to view myself as a bit of an idiot / fool, but thatโs fine since it can make people laugh.
Location: Northern Alabama, I know in my history Iโm active in the Auburn subreddit, but thatโs my university. I donโt care if youโre nearby, US is fine since I have no idea where Iโll end up after university.
So, did the template but I have a lot of other stuff to say! Currently, I canโt really travel as Iโve had Achillesโ tendon surgery (I can explain it more in detail in DMs) on one of my feet and will be having another surgery later in the summer for the other foot. So, even if youโre nearby canโt really do much, but thatโs fine since a lot of stuff I do is online anyway. I play video games, tabletop games, watch anime (and almost anything I find interesting), read, and used to cook and fence (both of those are on hold for the time being). Also love writing! Mostly poems, but I try some bigger projects from time to time.
If you look at my Reddit history youโll find Iโm pretty active in left wing subreddits and politics is a big passion for me, despite the fact Iโm a compsci major. I donโt care what your political orientation is, though Iโd like to talk someone who else enjoys politics. I also like history and tried to understand philosophy (Iโm too dumb to understand it, honestly).
I decided to edit this and add in my musical tastes. Bit of folk (Irish/Scottish), bit of rock, bit of lo-fi. Itโs mostly individual bands / artists I like. My favorite being the Smiths.
I debated making this for a while but I decided to anyway, as why not? I donโt have a lot to do this summer because of the surgeries so might as well try to talk to people.
We moved here from GA but not native Georgians. We live near Cleveland but seem to hear a lot of Southern accents in Cuyahoga and Lorain County. It's not widespread, but not tourists based on location and activity.
Is there a part of Ohio where these are common? It's not really a retirement destination, but most people I observe with this accent tend to be older.
Not hating, just curious!
She plays guitar, banjo and other obscure instruments as well. I remember some originals she played, also videos of her checking out some obscure guitars.
So yeah, southern country music girl in her late twenties/early thirties (mostly a brunette) on youtube. Anyone knows?
I'm rewatching the Florida Crowes season on Justified and I can barely pay attention when Michael Rappaport is on screen. It's literally painful for my ears, his awful awful accent. Also recently had similar issues with the otherwise brilliant Ozark, the guy playing Jacob Snell (a fine actor!) made me want to scream every time he opened his mouth.
Who else?
Can anyone seriously explain how people actually develop southern accents? Seriously, majority of the country has essentially no accent but southerners almost always have one? Was there a predominant ethnic group that populated in these areas in the past that had a strong accent or is it something learned?
It's like too good. We northern folks along with our Canadian neighbors could never hold a candle to the way you guys do your Cowboy talk.
the fuck kinda shit is that? How the fuck does that even work? Makes no sense
Hey there. I'm not a native speaker, but I've been interested in imitating a southern American accent. Let me know how accurate my accent is. Bonus if you can tell where I'm from.

I'm reading from The Sound and the Fury by Faulkner:
Caddy uncaught me and we crawled through.ย Uncle Maury said to not let anybody see us, so we better stoop over, Caddy said. Stoop over, Benjy. Like this, see.ย We stooped over and crossed the garden, where the flowers rasped and rattled against us. The ground was hard. We climbed the fence, where the pigs were grunting and snuffing. I expect they're sorry because one of them got killed today, Caddy said. The ground was hard, churned and knotted.
Really liked the southern accent that he speaks. I wish he would've lived on longer in the show, he was a really enjoyable and believable character. Maybe he even would've sided with the Byrd's. Only Darlene didn't like the Byrd's.
It's really too bad that he got killed so early on in the show. He's definitely one of my favorite characters of TV shows.
Killing Del was also a mistake in my opinion. Seemed almost like a excuse to remove him from the show.
Hope this makes sense
So I am pretty much answering all calls these days, but I am having an issue with getting hung up on pretty quickly. I do use a really thick Southern accent to make it more funny if I start recording them or not, but I also wonder if I am getting hung up on because they have trouble understanding MY accent?
Is it best just to use one's normal voice, or just go "all in" and get a voice changer?
I remember reading about how a lot of people can't really here accents in most singers voices which I think is true to a degree because of the extended vowel sounds and whatnot; but this doesn't really seem to apply to southern accents for some reason. Is it just intentional? Or does the it come naturally to people with that particular accent? It's much easier for me to identify a southern accent than an English accent for some reason (I'm american) and I got to thinking about this. I didn't even know mick Jagger was British for like the first half of my life but if a country singer comes on I automatically know they are going to be from the southern states.
There was a thread, now archived and closed to replying, that blew me away! I thus want to "reopen" the thread. So I copy-paste the opening post.
"Over the past 10 years or so, I've noticed that Southern accents (or at least mild Appalachian drawls) are becoming more prevalent among residens of rural UNY towns that are poorer and more removed from a metropolitan area -- places like Cortland, Waterloo, Seneca Falls, and Bath. As far as I can tell, these aren't transplants from Southern states, but native upstate New Yorkers.
I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this, and if this is really a thing, what's going on? The only explanation I can think of is an uneducated "armchair anthropologist" guess -- with the loss of manufacturing and a brain drain, what was once "blue collar" rural Upstate is turning into "redneck" rural Upstate. With that, elements of country/Southern culture (country music, powersports, hunting/fishing, pickup trucks, etc.) now have a much stronger pull than traditional Rust Belt culture."

Huh? I come from Interlaken, in South Seneca county. Interlaken is about 30 miles south of Seneca falls. Southern accents? Amazing. The thread spoke of theories like workers on oil field rigs and country music influences.
However, my Guts tell me that there are other reasons. On a map of creek names, the creek name "run" is found in Pennsylvania and North West Virginia. However creeks in the Central finger lakes are sometimes called "runs"!
I think there are more interesting reasons though why this area has a southern influence on the accent. Seems this area is isolated and far from cities. That alone, though, does not explain!
linguistic people often write excitedly about the huge change in Urban Northern dialects, The greatest change in 1000 years, they write! Chicago, Rochester, Syracuse. The urban areas see this change, and this change is NOT the southern change, though. There is something strange going on with southern accents appearing here, in rural areas, though. Maybe it has to do with Soul Of Place! Upstate south of Syracuse and Rochester IS the Appalachians! North Tompkins county sees "hills" of 2100 feet., for instance. There are lots of hollows with house trailers. Tompkins country, as well as Courtland county, are in the "Appalachian economic zone", for instance. my old Seneca country sees ridges

Harry Potter nโ That There Fancy Rock
Well that Harry Potter sure did get himself in a pickle nโ made a case for having some damn good life insurance at the pig pimples castle his first year oโ scooโ. So he jammed his wand up the nose of the big booger himself and went about his way and without much chit chat or problem solvinโ, he nโ Ron looked at that frizzy haired banshee nerd nโ said โWell damn, guess we ought to be friends.โ
Now itโs too long a story to tell but it turns out that squirrelly Quirrell had some whole other man livinโ on the back of his head nโ tellin him to do all kinds of shit. Youโre not supposed to say his name โcause all oโ Hogwarts been tryinโ to cancel that no-nose demon man, but itโs Voldemort.
