A list of puns related to "Sound localization in owls"
We saw one of the loudest eSports crowds during Japan vs Australia, with only ~2,000 people. The OWWC qualifiers (in both locations) brought in 50k viewers on the English stream, which is the highest viewership in 2017. There were also loads of people who were supporting their country (probably some who are watching OW esports for the first time.) Looking at all of these, I think Blizzard can bring alot of fans for OWL due to localization, and the idea of supporting their country/city.
Hello!
I'm a mechatronics engineering student. In my limited free time i have been researching and trying to understand binaural spatialisation or 3D surround sound and how it can be analyzed.
The goal is to improve on different media's accessibility for the hearing impaired. For example to aid in FPS video games, as a hearing impaired person would generally have an disadvantage in such games, where spacial audio is important.
Currently the few research papers i've read and tried my best to understand, seem to get very complicated and mostly deal with microphone arrays as audio source. The main method i have found is audio signals being manipulated by HRTF and HRIF. Video games use this method, with Valorant even mentioning the setting as HRIF. The challenge though, is decoding these signals into accurate information about the source in 3d space.
Another method that is popping around is using deep learning to train software to recognize the directions. Though again, no examples using any media. Microphone arrays usually as source.
Is it nowadays possible to localize audio direction in realtime, while compensating for noise? Would it work with analyzing specific frequencies to limit noise? Surely if it has been figured out, how humans generally perceive sounds and that simulated on headphone speakers, it can be reverse translated into a 3d coordinate systemfor example?
I believe media's like movies or video games could be in someways improved through haptics or other means for the hearing impaired and perhaps for hearing people even, but as in for now, it looks like a very very difficult task. Perhaps someone knows better, or can point me to the right direction!
I started playing the PS4 version of Kingdom Hearts Final Mix and got to the Mythical House in Traverse Town. I remember in the original you could randomly hear owl sound effects outside it as a little nod to Archimedes, Merlin's owl, from Sword in the Stone. I entered and reentered the area and haven't heard it once. I was just curious if they removed it from the 1.5 version.
Short explanation: sound localization is hard, and the game is new.
Medium explanation: sound localization is hard, and people forget that people were and still are complaining about sound localization in CSGO, the premier FPS that's almost a decade old. Fortnight suffers from similar complaints.
Long explanation: Valorant's beta has not yet implemented an HRTF system. Older CSGO players will remember that HRTF was not introduced until a 2016 update. Valorant uses UE4, surely there's already a great HRTF SDK available that works with the engine? Yes there is, Steam Audio. Having to put "Valorant uses the Steamยฎ Audio SDK" on the splash may look bad for Riot. Building your own HRTF is extremely complex, and it is not a solved problem. Maybe there will be fully functional HRTF in the 1.0 release, maybe it's years away.
To those in the back who keep saying that issues like this are why "the game is not even close to ready for release", a common saying in startups is that "If youโre not embarrassed by the first version of your product, youโve launched too late." Obviously the Valorant devs know the sound localization is wonky. If Valorant is going to become a serious competitor to CSGO, it will be addressed.
Hello,
I am looking for a game in which performance depends on or is influenced by spatial sound cues. The idea is to use this for a research study that tests the ability of subjects to sue sound location cues to perform or succeed. I ran across some audio only games (some of which seem no longer available) like Blindside and Blind Legend. I was wondering if anyone knows of any other games. They do not have to be audio only but they should be much easier to play or perform when stereo or surround is enabled vs mono. Any leads appreciated.
Best
Mike
hey guys, I'm hearing person but I'm genuinely curious, which one is a bigger issue for you (or are they both very big issues): sound localization or speech to text? How much of an issue is it for you? If those aren't relevant issues, what would you say is your biggest struggle?
Don't get me wrong, i genuinely want to connect with your experiences :)
When OWL localization happens in Season 3, how will OWL teams realistically find home arenas? Reportedly the current Blizzard Arena cost a couple million to construct.
How I, Brandon E, a non-Blizzard employee with no solid evidence to the dealings of Blizzard or Activision,
believe the 3rd season of the Overwatch League will do the act of localization.
Now, on the outset, I want to be clear: Overwatch League, as much as we wish it was, is NOT YET mainstream. OWL does not have the capacity to run the league similar to how the NBA runs its league, with games everyday of the week across the league and flying almost everyday to a new location to play a game. OWL does not have the infrastructure to do such a thing. Flying the crew necessary to run a giant operation like this is too expensive, especially when you take into account the need for the various non-english broadcasts of the matches, visaโs and passports to each nation for every player, coach, broadcaster, and tech personnel, and the equipment itself. It was floated that there would need to be 10 sets of broadcasters to host the games. That isnโt possible, and more importantly, not cost effective. Remember, this is a BUSINESS, not a labor of love to the fans.
Or, just think of the players: Imagine a team having to travel from London to China in 2 days to have a match. It isnโt possible in a realistic fashion. We would want to watch these teams at the peak of their playing ability. A sleep deprived London Spitfire against the Chengdu Hunters is not what I would spend my time watching. Yes, the NBA does road trips where a team will go into the opposing conference and play 5-8 games on the road, but OWL works differently. The team is only at max 12 players, with much more equipment needed than just a ball, enough space to have a full sized court, and refs.(LINK) It is also a setup that is not as simple as what we see in the NBA. The court is a set size surrounded by seats. Each arena will have multiple uses within the season and between games. Setting up an arena and breaking it down is much harder for an esports event than an NBA or NHL game. (LINK)
What I feel is the most logical solution for this problem is to do what I will lay out within this essay.
First off, I need to set some groundwork:
I am going to work under the assumption that:
I said โWhom?โ
The purpose of this is to inform. Nothing else.
Conquest and Revelation is here.
I already did a Masterpost for this on my Tumblr, so go there if you don't wanna scroll here. I'll be using he/him for Corrin in this.
Hereโs a link to a post I made where I list my sources for this stuff.
Chapter 1
-During the back and forth of Leo saying swordplay isnโt the only way to get strong, he concedes when Xander praises his magic, sayingย โbecause you acknowledged me, Big Brotherโ. This early example of Leoโs insecurity isnโt in localization, though the Pointy Metal Sticks line is kind of funny Iโll admit.
-I know that everyone already makes fun of theย โthe adult that you technically areโ line, but the line really does suck. The original just saysย โgeez, always such a bratโ, which imo is much better than trying to justify it in weird meta 4th wall stuff.
Chapter 3
-JP version has Iago mention that the mission is to see whether Corrin is qualified to help govern the Kingdom. Localization just says itโs to see whether he/she is โworthyโ, and not explaining what he/she would be worthy of.
-Xander saying he arrested Hans himself is not in the JP versionโฆ which, letโs be honest: arresting Hans yet having Peri as his personal retainer does nothing but Xander look like a mess of a character, but thatโs the localizationโs trademark I guess. Just let it be known that Xanderโs standards arenโt as wonky in the JP version, and this is an example of that.
-Lilith explicitly mentions her father, mother and friends having passed away when going to the Astral Plane/My Castle for the first time, instead of just a vagueย โthereโs no one left hereโ.
Chapter 4
-Iโve known this for a while already, but Garon luring Sumeragi to Cheve under false pretenses is a localization creation. The JP version has Sumeragi go to establish friendly relations with Chevalier (Cheve), not Nohr. Garonโs troops ambush him instead of catching him in a trap. The JP version of events makes a hell of a lot more sense in many ways. 1) Why would Sumeragi trust the leader of the kingdom that Hoshido has been warring with forever to not be a dick, and 2) going off of that line of thinkin

Hi all, Iโve been reading The Game Audio Strategy Guide, and in Chapter 3 it mentioned โHuman subconsciously equate higher pitch to a higher vertical placement in a spaceโ I tried to google it but thereโs too many unrelated articles. I wonder why it is๐thank you in advance
