I've read that Andre Previn "severed ties" with Soon Yi after she began going out with Allen. I don't know what that means legally (cut her out of his will? formally relinquished his parental ties?) but it sucks. Imagine any father severing ties to his daughter because she goes out with someone he disapproves of.
This indicates to me he never really treasured her as his true daughter, and she knew that all along. Kids are smart. This was never an adoption that "took." And Andre Previn was scum for doing this.
This is important.
If all the prominent Asian American women are discredited in such a way, such as being linked as "enablers" to powerful, allegedly sexually deviant, white men (e.g. Amy Chua, Julie Chen, Michelle Rhee, Elaine Chao, Grace Park, Yoko), then what kind of message does this send to other women of color?
Can they trust Asian women any more?
Is even Tyra Banks, a defender of women of color, behind the scenes, shaking her head at the pattern that is noticeable to pretty much everyone?
Is there any woman we can trust to carry the torch (besides the congresswomen)? Are Constance Wu or Ali Wong really the only ones we have?
Other WOC have begun to give us the side eye. We need to stop this. It will be a stain that will affect Asian women, hapa women, and our children for generations to come.
We cannot let this pattern turn into some sort of "original sin" for being born a hapa.
