And it is quite the experience.
If you're unfamiliar with some of the recent events, Michael Grant gave an interview a few months ago on the Animorphs Anonymous podcast, where he revealed that Sev Ohanian, (the writer/producer of Run and Searching), had submitted a great pitch for the Animorphs movie which was passed on by Picturestart.
Sev Ohanian is a big Animorphs fan and also a reddit user (/u/sevohanian).
Today in response to some fan requests, he's discussed what his idea was on Twitter.. Transcript follows:
Hi, in a recent podcast interview @MichaelGrantBks mentioned that you had a really good pitch for Animorphs. Is this true? And if so would you be able to share your pitch?
Hey hey. Honestly yes its true.
I’m a lifelong fan of ANIMOPRHS & I even roped my writing partner @aneeshchaganty into prepping a detailed pitch w/ me. Since Michael spilled the beans (& since our pitch didn’t make the cut).. yeah can def share some details.
Here's how it went down:
Growing up it was my favorite book series. A year ago I became close to the authors @kaaauthor & @MichaelGrantBks. That led to a meeting with the movie's producers.
We met with them about 7 times to pitch our 20 page treatment. Ultimately the job went to someone else.
On one hand it was a relief cuz we have WAY too many active projects but it was also bittersweet as it felt like we really cracked a GREAT way to develop movie #1.
This was the one and only time we've ever submitted for a writing gig (vs writing our own thing).
And it is obviously NO easy task to adapt a series from 20 years ago with 60+ books into a cohesive film franchise.
But here's a brief overview of how we did it:
We started our pitch by listing the 6 fundamentals our script would NEED to embody to remain faithful AND be successful.
Our central theme:
There's a famous saying that "War turns men into animals." With our Animorphs script, we'd explore that both literally and metaphorically.
The fundamentals:
- Wish-fulfillment x100
- Paranoia-filled neo-noir tone.
- Moral ambiguity (they're essentially child soldiers!)
- Can you fight to save yourself, w/o losing yourself?
- Evolve from source material wherever necessary
- NEEDS to be fun and funny.

Was like what up ma and she like chillin but I need me some of that chicken sandwich. Bought this chick two and gave her a coupon. She wasn't feelin it until I jumped in the Lambo but I just burned out on her
Think about it!
All of the members of Sev'ral Timez are blonde. Who else is blonde? Gabe.
But what really got me thinking about it is how all of the clones have blue eyes. None of the other characters in the show have blue eyes, except Gabe.
They both also are considered attractive by Mable and other girls.
And they both make out with inanamate objects:
"I heard about these things called trees! I don't know what they are, but I wanna kiss one."
"Did he just make out with his puppets?"
...which for the clones is related to social issues, caused from being icolated from other people. For Gabe, we're just supposed to think that he's weird, but what if he's been through the same thing, but has adapted slightly more to society?
Gabe doesn't really have ties to anyone else in town, and never has any parents or other friends around, despite him being about Mabel's age.
And if he was abandoned/ ran away, he probobly would have grown a ponytail and try to find a way to incorperate his natural musical talent into his life in Gravity Falls.
There's probobly more I haven't noticed, but this is just what I've put together. It's driving me nuts and I had to say something!
