A list of puns related to "Scattergories (game show)"
Recently purchased Scattergories and believe the included instructions are misleading / vague in comparison to the "original" rules of the game.
I'll add this is not some special themed version, and contains the same scorecards (12 rows, 3 columns) and 20 sided die.
Here are the instructions (verbatim) causing me confusion.
PHASE 1
- PHASE 2 - I'll skip this section: Explains how points work (Cancelling duplicates among players etc..)
START A NEW ROUND
Roll a new letter, start the timer, and continue playing. Use the same category list you did in the previous round.
Fill in a different sheet with your new answers.
WINNING THE GAME
After playing two rounds, add up the two scores on your answer sheets. The player with the highest total wins.
If there is a tie, play a third round.
I'm reading this as putting down three multiple answers across the columns for each category. Then, under winning the game, you play two rounds (Two letters would be both sides of the score sheet) and if necessary play a third for ties.
I know the original rules, but doesn't this seem misleading? Or was there a change of rules from the Boardgame Committee?
Letter is R. Category is Countries. My friend put Rico, Puerto claiming that Puerto is the first name and Rico is the last name. I said no way since you can't just say Rico and can't just say Puerto. There is not a first and last name for Puerto Rico, it's one name. She quit playing over this debate. Does anyone actually think Rico, Puerto is an acceptable answer??
If you donβt know the game Scattergories (also called Stop), the rules are simple.
A person names a few categories, and then announces a letter. Each player must come up with a word or phrase that fits the category, but begins with the letter given.
However, this is online, so it will have to be modified.
The answers can be indirectly related (for example, βiceβ could be an answer to βcubeβ.
Also, there are bonus special answers, if you answer close to what the bonus is, you get a bonus point.
Using the first character that is a letter in your username (if you have no letters, use the letter βnβ), play Scattergories with every one of the categories below:
Hot Stuff
Stuffed
Black animals
Very hard
Winter drinks
Jingle Bells, _______
Aw man
Fishy...
Internet Meme
Since this is some steep competition, I'm changing it to whoever gets 20 points first gets the prize.
You have 5 chances. I will tell you how many bonuses you got and for which ones, so you can guess again.
so for the letter J for the category President.
one person put: John Adams another: John Quincy Adams
is that allowed? because the J word is the same..
The letter was F and the question was "things found in space" I put "Fe" as in Iron. I was ridiculed for this answer but I thought it was good! What's your opinion?
If youβve never played, you get a letter and have to answer 12 categories with that letter and try not to match any other players. Our letter was H. The category was School Subject. I put Hebrew. I was voted down. What do you guys think?
In scattergories we had the letter C and category was menu items. We had three answers, crab, crab cake, and carrot cake. Should these all be accepted or should we cross off due to duplicate words?
They just kept putting dick and penis in as answers lol
My friends and I got into a heated debate on scattergories. The number one rule was you canβt use adjectives. Another thing was you could get multiple points if you use more words in answer as long as all the words started with the assigned letter. So we were on the letter A and the list item was βThings you save up for.β So I go for two pointer and say Apple accessories. They wouldnβt count it because Apple was being used as an adjective describing the accessories but I was saying that itβs the brand name and that itβs who makes the accessories and thatβs makes it all nouns. Am I wrong on this?
I was playing scattergories with the family tonight and my mom kept playing world on the letter R as βReal Ghostsβ for something scary. I kept getting out voted on it not being acceptable because the scary part was not right for the letter. She also did for something cold βroads with ice.β Or would just add words like βcoolβ βfunβ βhappyβ to make the word work. Is this acceptable?
I was playing a game of scattergories and had to go off of the letter N. The category was fruit and I put the spanish word for orange, which is naranja. My fellow players decided that that was unacceptable? Should we have counted it?
Categories was types of tree letter was S. Multiple people wrote Spruce but one player wrote Sitka Spruce. How would this be scored. I suggested spruce be cancelled but to keep sitka as a single point.

Thanks for all who participated this was so much fun!
This sub has already become such a great source of hope for me. I have been off work for a while to work on some mental health stuff, and this sub has been so supportive and gotten me interested in people again. My whole job is talking with people and it's made me feel more ready to get back to work than I expected. So to say thanks I wanted to hold my first contest and my favorite game!
Rules:
-DBAD
-Have something $10 or under on your wishlist
-Use the word 'mokey' for the randomizer βΊοΈ
-Starting with the letter A, pick one letter to begin a word for each of the following categories:
*-A cartoon character
-A musical instrument
-Someplace you want to visit
-A term of endearment
-Excuse for being late*
-Contest ends when we're done with the alphabet!
Have fun! π
Edit: i think the only missing letters are u and y, unless I've missed them. Good luck lol!
Playing scattergories, letter H, Terms of measurement.
Wife and I both couldnβt come up with anything good, I came up with βhairβ thinking about how we often say things like βIβm a hair taller than himβ or βI missed that other car by a hairβ. Definitely think that one is borderline.
Wife came up with βHeightβ like width, length, etc.
My argument is: if someone asks how tall you are, you donβt say βIβm 75 heightβ or I weigh 200 weights. Where hair can at a least be used in a comparison.
What are your thoughts and how would you score it?
Thanks
Say you roll the letter βPβ and the category is βcity.β Is it an acceptable answer to use Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and receive double points? Similarly, could you use Monterrey, Mexico for βMβ and receive double points? I say yes, you can use alliteration for states/countries, but some friends say no. I havenβt been able to find any references online to settle this if anyone has one that answers this definitively and isnβt just conjecture. Thanks!
In a recent round, the letter was E and the clue "Celebrity". One person wrote "Ellen Page" and another "Elliot Page".
In table discussion, we confirmed that the first writer was unaware of Elliot's transition. Ultimately, we decided that both entries referred to the same Celebrity (despite deadnaming), especially given the continuity that Elliot still discusses projects performed as "Ellen" and continued contracts and jobs started pre-transtion (e.g. Umbrella Academy), and therefore the entries cancelled. Essentially, we treated it like a typo.
The counterargument at the table was that Pre- and Post-Transition names reflect different identities and personalities; this was rejected because we didn't know (and largely can't unless publicly discussed) if Elliot sees "Ellen" as a different person or instead that the renaming reflects a continuation and refinement if identity - we collectively knew people who thought of their pre- and post-transition lives in each different way, some leaving their old lives completely behind and others inhabiting them entirely.
And of course, I can absolutely see the argument that the deadname should be rejected and the post-transition identity given points; however, in this case the writer genuinely didn't know about Elliot's transition and was mortified to find out they'd deadnamed him. They're not into celebrity culture and hadn't seen any projects with the updated credits, so the table couldn't coalesce around rewarding someone else for this player's failure of pop-culture knowledge.
It's a very narrow question, but I'm curious what this community of enthusiasts would have done? I know it's a very touchy subject, so in the poll I'm asking for a ruling on this specific incident rather than a general rule, though I'd love to know your discussion in the comments for how to handle this sort of thing generally.
Tic-Tac-Dβoh
Some of you may like this game. Name as many names in one minute and 30 seconds with the given letter. You go against strangers. Iβm not sure if this is allowed here but I feel like this community would do so well. This challenge is only available on Tuesdays.
u/kitty-purrs, congrats and thanks for playing Scattergories today :)
