Last night prior to the university of Cincinnati’s basketball game they had fans show up in Nippert stadium to have a drone show of around 200 drones to spell out their accomplishments in the sky. Some of the images they had displayed by these drones were 13-0, back to back champs, the college football playoffs logo and the C-paw in the sky. As an American I've heard quite a lot about the prestigiousness of SKY universities in Korea and how literally every single student wishes to get into one of these. Getting into a SKY university can definitely bolster your status and future prospects. For example, 40-50% of politicians and CEOs were SKY alumni, along with 60% of bar admittees.
While I do understand how SKY universities can be a real game-changer for those who are admitted, but at the same time is it really necessary to pigeonhole oneself for the sake of these 3 unis? There are literally hundreds of other universities in Korea.
Over here in the US yes the Ivy Leagues are super prestigious- a lot of our politicians and Wall St people graduated from there. But at the same time graduating from one isn't always a guarantee in a successful life/career. It also depends on your major and intended career- in fact many employers could really care less about where you went for college.
I'm just curious if the SKY obsession in Korea is more nuanced than it seems to be.
