Hey friends, I'm relatively new to sound design, and I'm just asking for some quick tips on how to reduce room reverberation when recording in a non-soundproofed room (like my bathroom, which I use to record foley). Are there any filters, plugins, etc that may help with this? Thanks!

How to design a ceiling to reduce reverberations in a room.

Are there any guides out there for how to design ceilings for reducing reverberations in a room? Most commercial systems I see seem to work on the principle of an insulation lined soffit and then a partially perforated suspended ceiling. But I'm not entirely sure what each element does. How they work in tandem, and how to size the perforations.

Rooms with high reverberation, audio sample included.

Anyone know any tricks when dealing with rooms with very long reverberation. I recorded just the drums acoustics so you can have a reference. The room is pretty big, high celling, 500 people max (seating, it's mostly used for weddings), the reverberation isn't much better when it's at full capacity. I usually don't use any reverb on singers, as moving more then a few feet from the PA the rooms reverberation is already overwhelming.

Acoustics - Lower Tone in Reverberation - Large Room

Ok, I've been trying to find any answer to this. In recordings and live music, in a large room with plenty of reverberation, after the music is stopped (the instruments stop playing), the reverberation tone drops about a quarter tone. It's easy to hear, easiest is to listen to the end of the overture to Thus Spake Zarathustra, when the organ stops, you can hear the tone drop. WHY????

Needing tips from folks experienced micing a live choir with full band in reverberant room.

I run sound for a Baptist gospel church and am looking for creative ways to get a better choir sound. I have been using Heil PR-31 BW's with some good result. The rear rejection of these mics help out a lot since the band is just bellow and in front of the choir. I still end up having to notch quite a bit out of the graphic eq in order to get them on top of the loud mix (Drums, trax, organ, keys, bass and guitar.) But this ends up sounding not as full as I would like. Here is a great example of a sound I would like to go for:

Acoustic Phenomenon: rising pitched tone in highly reverberant room

I am very familiar with general acoustic principles and psychoacoustics, particularly as applied to recording studio designs, audio post production (mixing in surround), and creating sonically immersive environments. I dabble in architecturally related acoustic issues related to larger spaces.

There's an easily experienced phenomenon that I can't explain, which occurs on a racquetball court. Court dimensions are 20 x 20 x 40 feet. Standing at the midpoint between the front and back walls (20 feet from each), and near one side wall, the sound of the ball hitting the front wall produces a distinctive, sustained, continually rising pitch (steady increase in frequency with a sine-like tone) as a component of the reverb tail in the room. This doesn't always happen, but it's a fairly common experience. I can't reliably reproduce it, yet. It usually happens when I'm warming up and not thinking about it.

Is this perceived? ie: an psychoacoustic phenomenon, or an acoustic anomaly explained by physics?

I'm familiar with the effect of a subtle lowering in pitch at the end of a reverb tail in very large acoustic spaces like church cathedrals, when a node is excited by a frequency just above the resonant frequency of the node and the reverb time of the node's reinforcement last longer than the original frequency (musical pitch) that excited it.

Any ideas?

[HELP] I searched for answers before posting, but can't find any. Need help with my very small home vocal booth 7'7"x6'1"x6'11". When installing fancy ass acoustic panels in locations based on professional design, should I also be putting stuff on the exposed walls and ceilings around the panels?

As the question says in the title!

I'm worried, as one does, that all the exposed wall and ceiling--made of drywall--left after I put up my wall, ceiling, and corner bass trap panels will still reflect sound.

Here is the room in 2D and 3Dwith small light fixture in middle of ceiling, washer-dryer--I will be properly covering this up, too--in corner, standard door opening into room in other corner:

2D: https://i.imgur.com/UexEjnT.png

3D: https://i.imgur.com/QBYkqqI.png

And here is the room in 3D with the placement of acoustic panels the professional recommended:

https://imgur.com/a/vtrGrBB

-- the desk in the centre "left" of the room is where my mic goes. There is no desk there but a small standing desk tucked into the corner so I can stand and record vocals and play with Studio One without having to sit down.

Is this something I truly need to be worried about? Is there a general way to treat, cover, etc. the exposed walls and ceilings? Should I put cork wall and ceiling tiles up everywhere first then the acoustic panels in their appropriate locations after?

Thank you for your advice in advance! πŸ™

The effect of placing acoustic panels is questionable.

It is a 4m*4m*2.5m room, and each wall is soundproofed.

And basically, about 80% of the entire wall surface of this space is constructed with about 5cm of a sound-absorbing plate of fabric magam. (Excluding the floor)

I'm installing bass traps made of 20cm thick minerals everywhere because i want much better response and reverbation time.

When i put the bass traps in the corner, the frequency response is definitely different.

But there was almost none of difference when the bass trap was placed at the first reflection point of the speaker left and right.

Is it because my room is already made of sound absorbing material?

Tell me what you think please.

They'll still find you, even if you're homeless

I hadn't given the situation that I now find myself in much thought before. I never planned for it. Before today, it always seemed like something that could only happen to someone else, but here I am. Homeless.

Of course I had warning signs. Deep down, I knew it would happen, but I felt that my preparation of my impending circumstance would only ensure its inevitability. It made sense to me at the time.

It's getting late, and I have nowhere to sleep. For the first time in my life, I don't know what to do for shelter. Such a basic instinct that most other creatures are born with, but here I am. Helpless.

I've been walking for hours, but I have finally found myself in downtown. It's an old downtown that has been left to rot after the rise of the mall. The irony.

It was an old abandoned record store, judging from what decals remain on the storefront window and the decor that adorned the walls inside. It was the only place that looked inviting, yet uninhabited by other people more... experienced... in their situation than I was.

The door was unlocked, surprisingly. The shelves are almost empty, save for a few obscure records. Joe "Fingers" Carr and His Ragtime Band. The slip made me force a somewhat insincere chuckle. I don't know who I was trying to fool by feigning such social interactions with... nobody.

Behind the counter, there was a door that led to what seemed to be an office. There's not much in here, just a big desk and a couple of tall file cabinets. One had been knocked over and was leaning on the other, but has yet to complete a full domino effect.

I found a bundle of newspapers under desk. It's too dark to try to read the date on them, but judging by how brittle they are, I'd guess they're a couple of decades old. I used one of them to dust off the desk and several others to make some sort of blanket. The rest of the bundle served as a pillow. The desk seemed like the best place to sleep. Less of a chance of waking up to things scurrying across my body to get from one end of the room to the other.

The newspapers rustle as I try to keep them all contained on top of my body, but when I am all situated, and my squirming stopped, a deafening silence fell over the entire building.

I closed my eyes.

I don't know when it occurred to me that there was a stench. Perhaps it had always been, but only now have I become aware of it. It smelled faintly like formaldehyde and mildew. It was such a faint smell that I thought I might be able to

Reverberation measurement setup

What kind of setup do you guys use for making simple reverberation measurements?

With simple I mean evaluate a rooms RT(30)60 on the most meaningful parts of the frequency spectrum and comparing them before / after and between rooms? Mainly used to give basic acoustical advice to improve. Nothing audiophile, just reduce RT60 to get a room to sound 'good'. Around 0,5-0,7 seconds.

Coming from a background (hobby) of designing loudspeakers I have a calibrated microphone, ARTA/REW a USB soundcard connected to a DIY measurement amp/rack and a calibrated SPL meter to set levels.

Questions:

- Do you use a normal/open dipole/multi face speaker and why?

- How important is microphone placement and do you average out multiple locations?

- ...?

How can I best tell/test if the acoustics in a prospective house well be good?

I am in the process of buying a new house. Whenever I visit my parents house, I notice they have very bad acoustics in their open floor living room/kitchen dining room. The room is fairly well populated with furniture, wall art, a rug, etc. But it is a pretty big room. And the ceiling is very high. If someone is making a small noise in the kitchen while we are watching something, it cancels out their sound bar/surround sound. If the sink is running on one end of the room, it sounds like it's happening in your ear, on the other side of the room.

This is what I am desperate to avoid! I do not want to buy a house with these kinds of acoustics. Most of the houses I'm seeing have high ceilings. Not necessarily as high as my parents (I don't have any hard numbers on my parent's or these houses I'm looking at). What can I do to:

  1. Spot a house with bad living room acoustics (online/in person)?
  2. Test the acoustics when looking at a home? (I once brought my sound bar/sub-woofer with me, but I'd prefer to not do that a lot)
  3. After purchasing a home, counter-act an open floor plan and/or high ceilings, high overall room volume and geometry/layout that is not conducive to good sound?

I'm sorry I can't be more specific. Thank you in advance for your help. :)

Well, that went well, Alex thought as he passed through the town’s poor excuse for a gate. Then again, he had kinda been spoiled when it came to walls, with most of the ones he’d been around being well over a kilometre tall.

Other than that, Alex was quite happy with the way things were going. As far as he could tell, the elf girl had pulled rank on the poor guards… or at least, it seemed like it - he couldn't really tell what was going on because of the language barrier.

Looking over at the translator icon at the right of his HUD, he was pleased once more. Apparently, the language these elves used was similar enough to English, even taking a lot of its structuring.

If he were to take the computer's word for it, he would have a full translation of elvish in around two days. But even mute, he would attempt to interact with his new companion…for better or for worse.

Continuing to follow his impromptu guide, Alex was not unaware of the dozens of people talking about him. Even with the language barrier, it wasn't exactly hard to miss the blatant staring and audible whispers.

β€œDat’el gattok ba da keksi grouder kloter U jol iva vaak…” What looked to be a highly drunk elf slurred, his mug of what Alex assumed was alcohol spilling as he swayed. However, it wasn't long before he was seemingly chastised by what seemed to be his identical twin.

β€œOpa de klor vu, yourak wa’ke grut! Itu lor forken kova!”

The language was odd to say the least - sounding like a bunch of different languages squished together. But then again, so was English.

Alex was just hoping his throat could make those noises once he downloaded the translation onto his implant.

Continuing his walk through the town’s cobbled roads, Alex felt his auburn-haired comrade tap on his helmet lightly, trying to get his attention.

Looking to his right, he saw her leaning over his shoulder smiling brightly at him, her face still bloodied and dirtied. β€œEvor tolak dat yalek b’rush, favan,” she said, whilst pointing towards one of the larger buildings in the area.

Would you like a tool that removes reverberation

In my master final project I created a AI that tries to remove reverberation from audio. I think I can improve the results of that AI, but before that I want to know if it will be useful for audio editing. Should I go for it or is something that is currently done with other technologies like speech enhancement.

Update 1:
I see that there is some interest in the field. I think I will try to improve it and if I get something good I will share with all of you.

Thanks for answering me

Update 2:
I saw again the results of my AI (neural network) and they weren't as good as I remembered. I am going to try to improve it, but I don't think I will get something as good as the solutions that are currently in the market, but at least I will try to create something interesting to publish here. Just for hobby. Sorry for creating such hype, I just wanted to know more about the topic and all of you help me a lot. Thank you!

Aghanim's Labyrinth Guide: Undying

Undying is one of the most reliable tanky heroes in this year's Aghanim's Labyrinth. He brings a lot of tankiness, strong healing, good utility, a decent amount of cheese potential, and good damage.

Note: The most consistent (albeit slow) Apex Mage clear until they fix it is to reroll Flame Revenant on Phoenix and Bury The Living on Undying at the beginning. Then, Phoenix cheeses the first two bosses while Undying fishes for Tombstone uptime on his shards and regular talents. All the teammates then suicide to Primal Beast (making sure no adds are left alive first) and Undying solos Primal Beast by hiding inside 100% uptime Tombstone. If you plan on doing this, most of this guide is redundant.

As Undying, your job is fairly simple. In normal rooms, frontline as much as you can. Heal teammates / yourself with Soul Rip. Drop Tombstone strategically so that it can do damage and soak up skills without dying straightaway. When bossing, mostly focus on keeping the adds off your teammates. Sneak in hits to apply Flesh Golem's damage amp on the boss if you can.

Skill Overview:

Undying has been changed in two main ways: his decay now gives a fixed amount of strength per unit/captain, and his zombies are now untargetable, but die instantly to any source of AoE. Tombstone and zombies have a whole slew of slightly wacky interactions with enemies. Feel free to add anything useful you know in the comments.

  • Some enemies do not interact with Tombstone at all - they do not try to attack it. These include: all bosses, Primal Beast (cheese potential)
  • Some enemies try to attack it, but are not actually able to do any damage to it. example: Snapfire (makes this room much easier)
  • Some enemies do not have normal attacks, but are still able to damage Tombstone since they do AoE physical damage, such as the adds in the Zeus encounter or the captains in The Chain Gang.
  • Zombies get hit by all skillshots. Notables:
    • Primal Beast - zombies block splitting shockwaves
    • Techies & Pudge- hooks
    • Multiplicity (PL) - be careful about using tombstone, PL's projectile will hit them and make illusions
    • Frigid Pinnacle (Venge & CM) - Venge stun
    • Salty Shore/Magma Mines/Stonehall Citadel - Captain projectiles

Shard Overview:

Undying shards are very flexible - almost any combination can work. While it is very satisfying to stack zombie buffs, it is important to keep in mind that the zombies, while untargetable, do die from AoE damage, and

The cracked screen fizzles in the darkness.

It’s the only thing still working in my immediate vicinity. It’s littered with dead pixels, and a faded magenta bar strikes down a segment of the screen’s left half, but the visuals and the sound are still quite clear.

β€œWelcome to Mr Sunny’s FUN-HOUSE RETREAT!” warbles a cartoonish voice, and a soundbite of cheering children rumbles out from the speakers along after it.

Sparks burst from a distended cable to my left. It hangs from the ceiling, with exposed and dangerous wires.

The screen shows me the POV of a camera, one held at the height of a child. The viewer is taken on a compressed, fade-cut tour of the Fun House Retreat.

It’s an amusement park. The sun is shining and all around are smiling children and happy families, eating ice-cream and running from ride to ride. Colorful arches stand tall overhead, and friendly faces sell popcorn and stuffed animals from path-side carts and stands. A rollercoaster whooshes by overhead to the sound of thrilled screams and cheers, and the camera pans across the food gallery: inviting-looking restaurants and milkshake bars.

Mr Sunny himself appears on-screen. It glitches for a moment as he does so.

Mr Sunny is a costumed character. He has an orange, humanoid body and a large, soft yellow head. It looks like a grinning sun.

The expression is fixed, of course. His mouth does not move as he speaks.

The grin is stretched just a little too wide.

The eyes are staring, and dead.

It is impossible to tell who is wearing the costume. There is no exposed skin.

The voice is masculine.

β€œWhere the sun ALWAYS shines!” he boasts, putting one hand on his hip and throwing the other out in a comical wave, high-fiving a young boy who scampers past him.

β€œCollect an autograph from ME for a FREE Mr Sunny stuffed buddy! Have ya seen me yet today? Be sure to keep an eye out and come say HI if you do!”

He chuckles.

The camera spins round in a circle, showcasing the best that the park has to offer as another rollercoaster flies round in a spiral in the near-distance.

The camera completes its spin and Mr Sunny is closer.

β€œUnless of course I SEE YOU FIRST!”

He laughs.

The screen glitches again. It shows us more of the park. More well-tendered trees and clean pavements. Posters adorned with grinning characters and immersive, interactive games and stands.

Deathworlders Meet (26)

Previous | Next

~This is our second day in β€˜Japan’, and Alex has decided to take us to the mountain I was looking at from the β€˜Tokyo Skytree’ yesterday. Turns out, it's actually a volcano, though Alex insists that there hasn’t been any sign of activity in well over a century. We’ll be climbing it.

Apparently, this has been a popular activity for ages. It’s only gotten safer with advancing technology, to the point where people are permitted to climb it even during the colder winter months, instead of just the warmer summer ones.

Never in my life did I think I would ever want to climb a volcano, but I also never thought I’d willingly travel to a Deathworld, I’m reminded of that fact every step I take. Pushing downwards onΒ Earth in order to take myself higher on one of its peaks.

We have to stop moreΒ often than other climbers due to us not having the same endurance humans do. Every time we stop, we turn around and look at the landscape around us. All of us except Agadus, that is. I notice that he only looks around for a short time, before staring at the summit, his eyes blazing with determination.

Eventually, after hours of climbing, Lucken and Brun begin to feel unwell. Altitude sickness, apparently.

β€œYou guys should go on ahead, Brun and I can just head back down to the last station and wait for you.”

We argue that we shouldn’t continue if they can’t, but they insist, so Prof Gamit takes them back down, while Agadus, Alex, Prof Canton and myself continue.

We climb even longer, and eventually I start toΒ feel the dizziness too. Alex and Agadus say they can continue by themselves, while Prof Canton and I head back down. ~

__________

[We ascend alone for some time, and I can tell he is determined to reach Mt Fuji’s summit. He rarely takes his eyes off of his goal, but I doubt I will make it that far, I’ll have to turn back soon. The lack of oxygen is starting to catch up to me, and before long I ask if we could pause for a break.

I charged my blade with an Aero Slice and swung my sword in a horizontal arc directly toward him. The sword hummed with energy as it released a slicing gale of wind directly in his path. He slid beneath it, hardly losing any momentum as his arms blazed with energy. He held them behind him and propelled himself forward on an explosion from the base of his palms. I wasn't ready for that and couldn't dodge in time. He wound up and threw a haymaker, connecting directly with my
