A list of puns related to "Pure tone"
Are there any acoustic instruments (including live creatures) that can create a pure sine wave tone? (No harmonics). Or is this the sole domain of a laboratory grade signal generator?
In a recent reread of WoK I noticed Shallan finds a reference stating that "humming of all things could make a Soulcasting more effective". In hindsight this almost certainly is at least a subtle nod to the rhythms/tones of Roshar.
I'm curious if theres any other evidence like this regarding surgebinding in general. Does this imply that attuning the rhythms might actually enhance surgebinding? Perhaps this relates in part to the mastery of the Fused over their own Surges.
I read that bone conduction testing is needed to determine if there are issues in the middle ear. Yet my doctor only conducted air pure tone (listen to sounds through regular headphones and raise hand when I hear them) and diagnosed me with sensorineural hearing loss (inner ear).
How does she know it's this type of hearing loss, that there is damage in the inner ear, if she didn't conduct the bone conduction or other tests? How does she know it's not an issue with the middle ear muscles or ossicles with just this test?
Note: She destroyed my ears with microsuction. This was months ago. Reason why I'm wondering if she even had any clue what she was doing with the hearing test itself afterwards.
In the epilogue of WoK, Wit asks βCan you feel it? Something just changed. I believe thatβs the sound the world makes when it pisses itself.β
Whether or not this is just another one of Witβs offhanded comments that he specifically makes in front of people who have no idea what heβs talking about should be open to debate, but this passage actually got me thinking.
After reading Warbreaker, learning about breaths, and finding out that Wit possesses enough breaths to attain Perfect Pitch, it made me wonder if the reason that Wit was somehow supernaturally aware of significant changes occurring on Roshar is because his Perfect Pitch grants him the capability of hearing the pure tones of Roshar.
I think itβs safe to say that the planet of Roshar, or at least the elements that comprise it, are aware of metaphysical events/occurrences surrounding it/them. I think that itβs plausible to believe that they can also respond to these occurrences through rhythms/vibrations.
So Iβm convinced that Wit wasnβt speaking offhandedly in this instance and that the reason he made such a comment was due to his supernatural senses, including but not limited to, Perfect Pitch. I wonder if there is further evidence to this hypothesis in other parts of the SA.
Apologies if this has already been confirmed and Iβm only now picking up on something thatβs already been discovered.
Rhythm of War has a great deal of stuff in it that danced around real world stuff IΒ learned in a class called "Sound Engineering" that I found really exciting. I'm hoping to communicate them in a way that doesn't hand wave away too much of the underlying principles, while also not getting dragged down into boring details or assuming too much prior knowledge for most people that might also find this interesting. The post will be mostly about the RL principles.
Sounds, particularlyΒ constant sounds like a note from an instrument can be analyzed according to their frequency content.
A "pure tone" will have only one frequency associated with it that is a perfect "sine wave" however, in real life, things generally aren't "pure" and actually, less "pure" tones are usually more desirable.Β Here's a picture of a sin wave pulled off the internet.
Because of the nature of how a bow draws across a violin string (or a plate as in the scenes in The Stormlight Archives) the wave generated from them is more like a "saw tooth wave" like this image
Now what really matters, is that mathematically it has been shown that for non "pure" repeating waveforms like the saw tooth above, there are multiple contributing frequencies that add up to make them, and the primary one or "fundamental frequency" is the pure tone with the same frequency as the repeating waveform.Β The next important characteristic is that all other frequency "components" are multiples of the "fundamental frequency."Β So the note A at the middle of the pianoΒ has a fundamental frequency of 440Hz, and that note is also comprised of other frequency content at frequencies of n*440Hz.Β That is, 440 (1x440), 880 (2x440), 1320 (3x440), 1760 (4x440), etc.
The below is a GIF from the wikipedia Saw Tooth page animating the frequency content being added together to make a sawtooth wave.
(Edit: link in case GIF doesn't work https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Synthesis_sawtooth.gif)

This higher frequency content in a note is sometimes called the "harmonic frequencies" and whether two notes harmonize is dependent on if this higher harmonic content meshes together mathematically, or it c
... keep reading on reddit β‘I believe I have seen Kaladin, Dalinar, and Venli each hear something "beyond the rhythms", a pure tone/warm light of Roshar.
Do we have any idea of what that is yet?
Hey I couldn't think of a great title but heres the situation-
I'm trying to write out this progression and the little melodies by ear, the difficult part is that I think pretty much all of the voices in the song are detuned.
Does anyone have any tips apart from trying to replicate the synth? Please don't 'spoil' the discovery for me by just telling me the chords or anything, but if anyone has suggestions that might help me on my path of discovery I would appreciate it.
The song is 'what was the last thing you said' by Alden & Glaive
I'm trying to assist myself with keyboard and guitar but nothing sounds quite right and relationships/intervals seem skewed to me because of the 'detuning', I think.
Thanks in advance
Hi so I was thinking
We are told in RoW that each Shard has its own Tone and that it corresponds to each of the Pure Tones of Roshar. And that originally there were only 2, with Odium becoming the 3rd much later down the line.
So my thoughts on this are that basically it took TIME after Odium arrived into Roshar for the people and Singers to assimilate Odium into their minds. And to actually start THINKING of him as a God in Roshar thus changing the Cognitive Realm itself at the same time as the Physical. Once the people AND spren began thinking about him as a Part of Roshar itself THEN he actually became part of it, making his Tone part of the Pure Tones of Roshar.
Now this means that most likely every Shard has its own Tone. If so then:
1: All types of Investiture have their own Tones that allow for manipulation just like Stormlight/Voidlight/Lifelight
2: Before AdonalsiumΒ΄s Shattering it mustΒ΄ve had its own Tone that was a Harmony of all those that make up the 16 Shards.
3: Is the rythm that Seekers feel when sensing Allomancers using their powers PART of the Pure Tone of Preservation? And would combining all 16 allomantic "rythms" give us the full Tone of Preservation?
4: Could you strip an allomancer, a Sand Master or a Nalthis person of their Investiture by singing their corresponding Anti-Investiture Tone same as with Surgebinding?
5: Is this why Hoid has such a huge affinity for Music? Why he could create hints of ilusions with his flute?
6: Will the Cosmere Saga end with a HUGE Battle of the Bands??
Hi all, I test my hearing using a pure tone generator every so often and see how high I can hear. But I wonder, is listening to pure tones at 12000hz+ (more) harmful to our hearing? Or is it okay to βtestβ these? Thanks!
