When someone comes up and says something like "I am a god", everybody says "Who does he think he is?"
I just told you who I thought I was. A god.
I just told you. That's who I think I am.
Welcome to the 19th installment of Popheads' Album of the Year series: Kanye West's Donda.
Writing about this album is overwhelming. Kanye is controversial and always has been. To an extent he invites this; he's brash, he's a provocateur; simply, he's a troll. He thrives on having an audience, loves attention and has an absurd ego. He is so over-the-top that he is a living, breathing meme. He's also an artist who has changed the course of music and often been called a genius. He's also called himself a genius, and a god, and an asshole. Kanye has made albums that are seen as some of the best of all time. He's also, to borrow a memorable phrase from one of his songs, fuckin' ridiculous.

The band was formed by Jon, the main vocalist, and Arin, the lead guitar. After a while, Barry the bassist joined the band as well. That was the first phase, and man what a phase it was.
This first phase consists of their initial three albums, their debut, entitled simply "Game Grumps" which happens to be my favorite, has so many fantastical songs like Goof Troop or Megaman 7, which all ended up being pretty huge among their fans. My favorite from this album, perhaps their entire catalog, was Pokemon Emerald, but really, any of these songs could easily snatch that spot. There were a few hidden gems here that are totally worth your time like Alladin For The SNES and Donkey Kong.
I could say they came out on top with that debut and that they would never match it, but it just so happens that their next album "It's no use" became huge, it kinda brought them on the map, especially with the ridiculously long side-A track, Sonic 06, which still remains as one of their most beloved tracks out there, that is, for the OG fans. I still prefer the first album though, I think that side-B on their second album is kinda weak in comparison with the first album, which was all golden.
Their third album, while still amazing, did not live up to the hype of the first two. It still contained amazing tracks like Chulip and Glover, but none of the tracks measured up to the first two. I mean, it isn't without surprise, there were talks back then that Jon was looking into a solo career and you can feel that through the recording. Suspicions were confirmed because Jon did eventually leave, he got replaced by another vocalist, Dan.
What I loved about this first era is that their sound seemed different from the other bands at the time, they were very progressive sounding, which made it kinda niche, y'know? There were still hits, sure, but they had this edge. The blend between prog and hard rock jived together amazingly. Jon had these wild high-pitched wails, it wasn't like anything I've heard before, he was just exuding energy. Arin was no second spot to Jon either, he would eventually break out into these awesome, elegant solos. Unlike other guitarists nowadays, his playing was subdued, that's what made his playing so memorable.
What's most coincidental is that when Danny joined, it was the very end of the decade, thus turning a page for the band into the
... keep reading on reddit β‘Just my opinion, but I think we are seeing a revival of psychedelic music analogous to the psychedelic movement in the late 60s and early 70s. Here's why:
Psychedelic music has been made since the 60s - and arguably even before; The Flaming Lips, Schpongle, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Slowdive, Animal Collective, etc. I think what made the 60s and early 70s unique for psychedelic music was its infusion into so many different types of music. Obviously psychedelic rock thrived in this period with groups like The Doors, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Grateful Dead, list goes on and on... But people seem to have forgotten psychedelic rock's infusion into country, soul, pop, jazz, and funk.
Many of the original psychedelic rock artists moved out of the Haight/larger cities and into the countryside and took on this 'psychedelic cowboy' persona with the heavy use of the steel guitar and bluegrass-like acoustic riffs. These artists - (The Byrds, Dillard & Clark, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Neil Young solo, Waylon Jennings, Willy Nelson, Allman Brothers Bobby Charles, The Grateful Dead as Jerry was originally trained as a bluegrass musician, even some of George Harrison) - founded the infusion of psychedelia into country music. If you go back and listen to the discography of some of the most notable artists of that time period, you will be surprised to find more country-sounding records than you'd think.
The same can be said about soul music. Maybe there is something inherently psychedelic about soul music (the fact that Otis Redding performed at the '67 Monterrey Pop Festival serves as evidence of this). Nonetheless, artists like James Brown, Marvin Gaye (check out track called Is That Enough), Al Green, Curtis Mayfield (listen to track Billy Jack from '75) Cymande, The Equatics, Roy Ayers, Shuggie Otis (kind of blues + soul), Supreme Jubilees, Syl Johnson, Quincy Jones, The Temptations 1970 record "Psychedelic Shack", etc. Even outside of rock, every genre was trying to capture the essence of the psychedelic sound.
In pop, funk, and jazz, examples can easily be identified. The Zombies, The Beatles, The Mamas & Papas, The Animals, Van Morrison (kinda), Steely Dan (kinda), Funkadelic, Parliament, Baby Huey, Kool & The Gang, Sly, Booker T. & The M.G.'s, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis (post 1968), Wes Montgomery, Frank Zappa, etc... you get the point.
**I think that infusion of psychedelic music into other genres was halted from the

Hello there my wonderful children, my underrated [FRESH] family, here we are at last! The 28th and final installment of Underrated [FRESH] Threads!
I didnβt expect us to go this far, but Iβm so glad that we did. I never had a set plan for when I was going to end this series but after missing a month while hosting the East Asian Pop Royalty Rate I never got back into the groove of it and seeing as there are some big changes in my life coming up I figured the new year was as good a time as any to close this chapter of popheads history.
I started this series because I wanted to provide a space for users to just talk about music they felt was slipping under the radar, and while we've never been the most popular I think we accomplished that. Gathering these songs, doing these write-ups, hearing everyone's thoughts, even making those stupid playlist covers, it was all something I really looked forwards to every month but also it was a decent amount of work so now I get to rest lol
Even if I didn't love every song posted here I love that someone felt the need to share it, and speaking about something you love is always worth it no matter what the end goal is. I appreciate everyone who's participated over the years, Iβm too shy to name drop names but to those regular participants, I see you and I thank you for sharing this experience and this music with me.
And now, some assorted stats to close us out! In the 27 months itβs been running Underrated [FRESH] Threads has hosted:
142 videos
189 songs
152 albums/EPs
That means users wrote 483 blurbs!
470 unique artists (Full list here, there are some... surprising names)
And special congratulations to Magdalena Bay, who were featured in the very first installment of these threads and close out the series with the most appearances of any artist (5). They're too big for us now though!
And that's all I have! Stay [FRESH] folks.
#How this thread works:
In the comments below, link to [FRESH] threads posted ANY TIME that you feel very strongly about, with the genre in parentheses beside it (however you describe it). Also include a little blurb as well where you try to sell the song to potential listeners. They'll be edited into the post.
Preferably it would look something like this:

Please read the guidelines below if you haven't participated in TTPT before:
Hello all, I did this over at the Dream Theater sub after finishing off their discography and I wanted to do the same here, as I think it can be a really fun conversation starter. I will note this isn't purely a musical ranking as I go into a lot of personal detail and experience, while trying to keep up with speaking mostly musically.
Honorable mentions: Jetpacks was Yes, Light, The Gods Must Be Crazy, Have a Blast, The Summer Jam, Basically every track form Juggernaut Alpha that wasn't on here but especially A Black Minute, Omega, Prayer Position, Lune, Garden in the Bones, and Sentient Glow. A lot I know, but shit that was really hard.
10 Catch Fire
Compositionally is this in my top 10? No. Performance-wise? Also no. This song just has a lot of meaning to me. Having to slog through a crappy retail job in my summer before returning to college where I major in music was such a hassle. While running items back to the shelves I stumbled upon this song and immediately thought of my fellow flute players at the school. Now my school had cut our programs and a lot of people had transferred away. But there was still a lot of us, and FIVE of us had senior recitals to perform (that is a TON) So holding onto hope of an amazing semester and having the lyrics reflect that, βIβll give you everything, just stay with me Iβll show you paradiseβ and for our recitals βWe exist in this moment only to flyβ as well as βbodies burning like the sunriseβ (the stage is very hot when performing) in isolation from theβ¦ other (more obvious) themes of the lyrics. This song still makes me think of my incredible friends, and so it sits here in my top 10, but no higher then 10, because even though it is well written, itβs not amazing due to the writing.
9 Scarlet
I think it will show here that I really enjoy Peripheryβs ability to blend poppy and catchy hooks into a heavy and darker sound. The way this song just punches down on the throttle at the beginning and hardly lets off is always appreciated, because even though I love slower songs, sometimes you just need full power. I find the main recurring guitar riff to be an iconic sound for the modern era of metal, and I can really see the Dream Theater influence on this song. The song lets off the throttle for only a brief time before going full send and the way Spencer sings βScarletβ to signal the return of the main theme is just utterly smashing.
8 Heavy Heart
This is actually the song that clicked with me to get me into this b

And as someone who loves to write, but works in finance, I donβt get much of an opportunity to be creative with my writing these days. I decided to try something new and do a write-up of each Green Day album as if Iβm listening to it for the first time. Next up: The groupβs second studio album, Kerplunk. As the pieces started coming together for a band which was finding success on college radio and east of the Mississippi, Green Day was about to explode. Billie Joeβs vast songwriting maturity, aided by the addition of drummer Tre Cool, helped launch the band to underground success as they found themselves touring the country. Unfortunately, low-budget production issues plagued the overall sound of Kerplunk, but the underlying compositions are beautifully crafted, chaotic, and full-on Green Day.
I also reviewed Green Dayβs first album. Check it out below:
1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours Review
Hereβs my scale for grading each song:
Skip. This song has little to no redeeming qualities and we'd be better off without it. (Also known as the Pitchfork score.)
Poor. This song is just a jumbled mess but might have one or two redeeming qualities.
Average. Itβs a decent song, if pretty easily forgettable. Missing that extra βsomethingβ to carry it to the next step.
Good. Solid song.
Great. Better than good, not excellent.
Excellent. Better than great. Very close to perfect.
Perfection.
Alright, without further ado, here's my score for each track on Kerplunk:
1. 2000 Light Years Away 7 β I donβt think enough can be said about what an amazing songwriter Billie Joe is. In terms of writing catchy hooks while maintaining the aggression and energy of Green Dayβs first album, Kerplunk! introduced us to a tighter, sleeker album fronted by 2000 Light Years Away - one of the catchiest, most boppinβ pop punk songs ever released. The songwriting maturity is evident here as Billie Joe was already writing hooks worthy of mainstream radio play if not mired by the raw and low-budget production of Lookout Records. Oh, and he was only 19 years old when Kerplunk was released. Incredible.
2. One for the Razorbacks 5 β It always baffled me when early Green Day fans called the band βselloutsβ after switching from Lookout to Reprise. In the transition from Kerplunk to *Do

I'll use BTS as example cause I follow them closely and are more familliar with their discography.
People always say that they miss Wings era and wishes they'd go back to that kind of themes and sound. Or the angrier and grungier BTS during Danger era.
On the other hand, the more festive and light hearted songs are always labelled as shallow or kidz bop like Boy With Luv or PTD.
BTS and Bighit has always maintain that whatever songs they put out, it is something they resonate with or it is their story at that point in time. So in that sense, wanting them to go back to Wings, when they've struggled the most is wanting them to experience those dark moments in their life again. It oddly feels like one of those belief that real art is born through pain and struggle.
It happens to Gidle too to a lesser extent. Dumdi2 (which is a BOP) was always regulated to being Kidz Bop or it's too "poppy" whatever that means. And songs like Oh My God and Hann are praise to high heavens for their dark tones.
The same thing occurs when talking about TXT. Crown is apparently "only marketed towards adolescent and teenagers" to quote a friend of mine and CYSM is where "oh they found their true sound".
People clamour for Red Velvet's velvet songs which are usually darker and/or sexier. But their red songs are categorised as odd, poppy or boring (Queendom n Umpah Umpah). At least that's the general sentiment I get from people around me cause I don't follow them that closely.
The amount ppl who shitted on Twice for having a cute concept is unfathomable. The moment their songs are tinged with darker and deeper undertones, "oh they've finally matured".
Is it just me and the people around me? Or is it a pattern of the larger community? Why do ppl wait for baited breath for groups to sound "darker" or "mature". Is it a sin to be happy and sing about it?
Jhope once said the stage he prefers and felt the happiest performing is Boy With Luv. Maybe the reason is simply because the song's vibe allowed him to embody those light hearted feelings.
PS; Sorry if my word vomit is phrased weirdly english is 2nd language.

Hello people, I hope everyone is having a great week and staying safe this holiday season. Last week we had a discussion about Peter Buck and his guitar playing inspired by his birthday. This week I wanted us to take a look at a Mike Millβs song and that one is none other than Near Wild Heaven.
Near Wild Heaven was the third single from the bandβs seventh studio album Out of Time released in 1991. What makes this song stand out from the bandβs discography is that it was the first time Mike sang lead vocals on a song he had written lyrics for. Now on Reckoning Mike wrote the lyrics to Donβt Go Back to Rockville but did not sing it. And he sang lead vocals on their cover of Superman but of course he didnβt write that one. But this changed when Out of Time was released, not only was there one song where Mike sang lead, but there was two! But we will get to Texarkana another day, today weβll be taking about the first song of the two.
Near Wild Heaven is this bright, poppy and jangly song about a relationship that seems perfect but yet thereβs still something wrong. The song begins with all the instrumentation starting at once and the first thing you notice is Peterβs signature jangle pop sound. Heβs playing these simple chords like D, G and A but heβs playing different variations of them to give it a more old school type of vibe. Heβs playing arpeggios of Dadd9, Aadd2 and G6 which keeps the song interesting despite a simple progression.
Lyrically, Mike starts singing about holding his partner close but yet he senses something is wrong. βThereβs a feeling thatβs gone, something has gone wrong.β And then he sings about taking this partnerβs hands and trying to shake in this near wild heaven. Now I think the term near wild heaven is him describing this place in their relationship that should be heaven and yet itβs not. Itβs close but thereβs something between the two of them thatβs keeping it from being perfect.
Mike also sings a lot about hearts like βhouse made of heart, break itβ and βmy heart thrown open wide in this near wild heavenβ which I think is him talking about how vulnerable heβs feeling and how heβs afraid of breaking hurt. Itβs definitely a contrast to how happy the music behind him is sounding.
Musically, I love the dynamics in the song. The intro has those shiny guitar arpeggios, with Mike playing a very old school bassline. Then when he starts sing

Time to celebrate one of my favourite artist discoveries from this year: Pirapus!
In case you're not yet familiar, let me introduce you to the magical world of the world's first "Stadium DnB" duo. Pirapus are Ben Hollamby (also known as Tex) and George Murray from, as has become tradition with all my favourite new dancefloor artists, the New to the Zealand, more specifically Christchurch. Seriously, at this rate I'll move over there just for the DnB. The two started putting out tunes in early 2020, pretty much right at the start of the pandemic. However, they did not let that stop them from jumping from success to success to success. After collaborating with amazing local talents the likes of SUUNE, BURNZY, PONZ and Elipsa in 2020 and a banging release on onesevenfour's first compilation (that was actually my introduction to them!), they caught the attention of none other than ShockOne, who promptly signed them for his new Dark Machine Recordings label.
Multiple festival appearances, multiple catchy carnage-causing contributions to the ever-growing list of dancefloor bangers and even a "Breakthrough Artist of the Year" at this year's Georgies later, it has now become crystal clear that 2021 is Pirapus' year. So let's talk about the tune they end this amazing year

First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Enter Rob Cavallo, producer extraordinaire and a man who doesnβt get enough love and credit for Green Dayβs success. After the band had achieved underground fame with 1991βs Kerplunk, Billie Joe and crew were ready to take the next step and Cavallo was the perfect guy to help them get there. He was able to work with the band to capture that signature Green Day sound and helped guide them to international success via one of the greatest and most significant albums released in the history of rock music.

Alright, without further ado, here's my score for each track on Dookie:
so first off, a couple things.
I wrote about half of this review like two months ago, so if it feels a little bit disjointed/contradictory in some parts, that is why.
Also, this review is insanely long and I don't expect anyone to read through the whole thing, i just wanted to write about my favorite album.
Bonito Generation is the 1st album from UK-based electropop group Kero Kero Bonito.
Bouncing off of the success of their viral song Flamingo, the band was quickly able to solidify their spot in the pop underground with a mixtape, which was followed by their 2016 debut.
Bonito Generation is an album that takes inspiration from a very wide range of genres, such as electropop, hyperpop, j-pop, and japanese hip-hop. Thematically this album is very all over the place with the varying sonic and lyrical themes throughout all of the songs on this, which, considering the contents of most of these songs, works very well as the songs tend to be about very childlike themes.
This album is quite all over the place, but in pretty much the best way ever because each song is insanely catchy and equally childlike and innocent.
Waking Up is a very simple opener that kicks this album off in the best way that it could have. Sarah sings about, well, waking up and the vocals she brings to the table on this song have a very excited and energetic sound, similar to how your friend would sound if they were waking you up at a sleepover. The chorus is paired with some bumping, excited, boom-box style synth leads that keep you pumped through the rest of the song. The verses have some groovy and bouncy electric bass lines, under Sarah rapping in both English and Japanese about how waking up can be difficult, but also can be very exciting because of all of the interesting things you can see throughout the day. The bridge of the song shows some dreamy, trippy flute leads, which fits very well as directly before the bridge, Sarah questions if everything that she experiences is just a dream. Both sonically and lyrically this song fits the theme of the album and is a perfect opener.
Heard A Song is a song quite literally about hearing a song that is so catchy that you have it stuck in your head for the rest of the day. Similar to the opening song, this one is very bouncy and exciting, and Sarah describes the song in such a specific way that you can almost imagine it yourself. The chorus is characterized by very sugary, sweet, melodic synth leads and some string-style synths,

IU (Lee Jieun) is known for many things, including being the "nation's little sister", being a great actress... and some dumb people that seem to only recognize her as "the crush of this member from this famous group" (you know what I'm talking about). But I think the biggest reason why any of these titles matter is that, on top of all, her music... just really slaps? It grows along with her, and tells the story of a complete artist.
(2008 - 2013) - Early bangers (i'm in my dreEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAM)
Very early on in her career, she was already making some numbers on the national market, and released some iconic bangers, such as "You and I", "The Red Shoes", "Friday" and "Good Day", Disney-soundtrack-worthy pop songs that make you feel like some sort of elf-fairy-quirky princess running through the city while people start doing a flash mob around you (lol).
(2015) Chat-Shire, Self-Composing, and Controversy (slightly unrelated to the music)
After a few years, a few songs and some maturing on her personal and professional life, she progressed into writing and composing her own songs. Around the same time, in 2015 news came out that IU had been in a serious relationship for some time now, and she started getting some level of criticism over that, as she had a lot of older male fans (yikes) that refused to accept that she was no longer the 15 year old that she was in her debut, but was now a grown woman that is free to do whatever the hell she wants with her private life.
With that context laid, she releases her first mini album to be completely self-written: Chat-Shire (my personal favorite project of hers to this day), along with the title track "Twenty-Three". In it, she calls out criticisms of her character and persona in the public eye, claiming that she "has never written a single line of lies" in her music, and that she can be "a sly fox" (as she was named by k-netizens for alleged poor attitude and "pretending to be innocent") or a "cuddly bear", or she can be both, or she can be neither, just leave her the fuck alone!! and i respect her for that!!
As a last mention about Chat-Shire, it contains the song "ZezΓ©" (probably my favorite IU song), that was written based on the main character from the book "My Sweet Orange Tree". The song got a shit ton of criticism, with people claiming IU was a

A few favorites from this collection for me:

We told her she can lean on us for support. Although, we are going to have to change her driver's license, her height is going down by a foot. I don't want to go too far out on a limb here but it better not be a hack job.

But no, seriously. I understand rule 7 is great to have intelligent discussion, but sometimes it feels like 1 in 10 posts here is someone getting upset about the jokes on this sub. Let the mods deal with it, they regulate the sub.

Yesterday I was listening trough the "Accept" Discography and found this masterpiece.
"Accept - Save Us" from 1979
And even though it is Heavy Metal, cause Accept is a Metal Band, it has clear Disco influences.
Here is the Song: https://youtu.be/FZtryIgfJ9I
And if you want to know what I mean with Disco Influence listen to the Refrain at 1:43

Pure Metal E-Guitar work, that strong Voicework of the Metal Singer Udo Dirkschneider together with the funky and Poppy Disco sound.
I never expected that Metal or Disco could work together, but I cannot stop myself from listening to this Song over and over again.
And I HAVE TO KNOW ... Is there more? I need this in my life ... for some reason!
Two muffins are in an oven, one muffin looks at the other and says "is it just me, or is it hot in here?"
Then the other muffin says "AHH, TALKING MUFFIN!!!"
Don't you know a good pun is its own reword?
Said if she ever hosts a gender reveal party, when it comes time to pop the balloon she'll spray everyone with water.
Gender is fluid.
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π
It really does, I swear!
My first impressions of MTC was mixed. While I always felt that Fagen's cool and poppy tune filled with futuristic and babylon lyricism had best suit his solo career, the more darker and heavy attitude of MTC left a somewhat "meh" impression. Not to say it was bad, but definitely not my cup of tea. Now waiting for his 5th album, I decided to give his discography another listen. And wow...I was wrong about MTC. This album is amazing.
The vocal harmonies are unlike anything I've ever heard. It's perfect moody blues jazz mixed with the suculent cocktail of pop-rock creates this aching addiction for more.
Fagen nails the high notes of The Great Pagoda of Funn and The Night Belongs To Mona. His voice is clear and smooth as butter, but still cunning and cutting as a knife.
I'm so glad to have returned to this album. The bass work is fantastic and I LOVE the lyricism to these songs. Amazing. Just amazing as always.
And now Iβm cannelloni

#The Rate is due on Friday November 5th, please message me if you want an extension
Here is the current particpant list, will do my best to keep this updated as more ballots come in.
As we all know, 2020 turned out to be a strangely good year for pop music. We had an abundance of shimmery synths, party ready beats, and whatever the fuck folklmore was, and that helped get pop fans through a notably difficult year. My cohost u/Awkward_King and I know that better than anyone, having hosted two of the ultimate rates this year. Butβ¦ thatβs just for the artists who fit the standard for the average pophead. What about all the theater kids? The spaghetti lovers!? The robot turned humans?
Enter the Dark Alt Pop Rate a rate full of albums that were too edgy, weird, or dour to capture the attention of the subβ¦ but somehow still did. From Poppyβs genre hopping rage to Allieβs somber, synthy gloom to Grimesβ wild exploration into space travel and getting rawdogged by the richest man in the world, all three achieve their own form of pop excellence. Each a revered body of work in the three womenβs eclectic discographies, they fit together perfectly as a trio of dark, alternative albums popheads unexpectedly took a liking to last year, and now it is time to see who comes out on top!
If you know the rules already and wanna headbang, sulk, and rate right away:
