How common were Personal Digital Assistants and Pocket PCs in the early 2000s or late 1990s?

Also, how expensive were these Pocket PCs compared to their functionality?

I thought more people would have them, since until the Hiptop came around these things were expensive.

Smartphones weren't easily accessible to consumers until the unveiling of the iPhone and subsequent Android phones in the 2010s.

Besides, people sometimes couldn't carry a laptop around with them, so they used these "pocket PCs" to do work on the go and as a complement to their cell phone.

[PC][Late '90s to early 2000s] Pocket tanks, but in space

Platform(s):PC (web-based game)

Genre: Turn-based artillery?

Estimated year of release: between 95' and '05

Graphics/art style:Similar to "Pocket Tanks"

Notable characters: n/a

Notable gameplay mechanics: Gravity effects, aim/power turn-based artillery shooting, randomly generated planets, online play.

Other details:

This game had space ships instead of "tanks". I remember several randomly generated "planets" in the play area. There were gravity effects on muntions and on ships (you could launch from your planet to reposition).

I also remember you could actually customize weapons, choosing how many stages of detonation they had and the style of destruction (fire, breaking apart into mini bombs, single huge explosions).

The game was web based and I dont remember what site it was hosted on.

Seems like it would be easy to find, but I haven't been able to track it down.

[TOMT] Pizza pocket like snack from the 90s or early 2000s

It wasn't hot pocket. It was something called Pizzazz or a similar name along those lines.

Edit: I remembered some more details. The biggest selling point was that they weren't a mixed up mush of ingredients in the pocket. It was three distinct layers, with cheese, sauce, and pepperoni. (When you ate it they did get mixed up.)

Buying PC games with your pocket money in the mid 2000s: a retrospective

I was looking at some old PC games on Amazon when I suddenly got a rush of nostalgia at seeing two specific labels:
Sold Out and Xplosiv.

It feels like only yesterday 9 year old me was browsing the spinning PC game rack at Blockbuster, hunting for the elusive game that fit the criteria of "looks fun", "cheap" and "rated 12 or under". This is how I had some of my first experiences with gaming - when I wasn't on the GameCube/Wii I was destroying cities in SimCity, figuring out the confusingly worded puzzles in Spongebob Squarepants: Employee of Month, or running around (at the speed of sound) in Sonic 3.

As I got older and got a debit card and Steam account, and Blockbuster sadly shut down, I stopped buying physical PC games as much - I'd still buy things like Thief 1 and 2 or Warcraft 3 if I found them in charity shops, but overall my game consumption didn't consist as much of physical boxes like it once did. I miss the hunt for cheap games, and the excitement when I found a sealed copy of something like The Sims 3 for cheap in a charity shop.

[TOMT][BOOK][2000's] Children's short horror stories book- one involved earthquake to pocket dimension, another had aliens hunting human

I've tried to find this for years because it haunted my nightmares as a kid. Probably near a middle school reading level. I only remember 2 stories:

  1. A pair of siblings move to a new area and experience an earthquake. They leave their house and find themselves in a pocket dimension of some sort- no time passes there but people are there from various time periods. They tell the siblings an aftershock can bring them home, and they get back home and see their parents.. Then there is another aftershock and their parents are gone.

  2. A boy and his uncle go out to the woods. The uncle wants to teach the boy to hunt, but he can't bring himself to do it. Particularly, he lets a baby animal escape from him and his uncle. Then aliens come down and shoot the uncle- they almost shoot the boy, but one of the aliens says not to because he's just a kid. They then take the uncle as a trophy and leave the boy alone in the woods.

Let me know if you remember this book and if it scared the pants off you too as a kid!

[TOMT][TOY][2000s] Tiny dolls similar to Polly Pocket

I'm trying to remember a line of very tiny dolls from my childhood (born in 2000, so most likely 2005-2008 ish) I believe they were similar to the compact folding Polly Pocket houses like these ones, but the dolls themselves were much more like a mini version of a fashion doll than the Polly Pocket dolls were. The Polly Pockets are kind of chunky and cartoonish whereas these were thinner and somewhat delicate. I believe they also had soft doll hair instead of modeled plastic, and you could (maybe?) hinge the dolls at the hips and shoulders. Think the vibes of a Barbie or Bratz doll but around 1.5 inches tall. IIRC, one of them was a blonde doll wearing mostly blue, but this could be a made up detail.

Any help is appreciated! It's also possible that they were just a particular line of Polly Pockets - just haven't been able to find a picture or name with what I've been googling.

[TOMT][Online game][Late 2000s] Polly Pocket-esque online game where you collect gems??

Okay so this is back in like 2009-2010 era where online games were bowing up in popularity and sites like Barbie and MySpace were the major thing for preteen girls. My friend is looking for a game she played when she was like 7 or 8 years old, so that age demographic.

The website was denim themed, and the logo of the website was written on like, the back pocket of the jeans. The main girl for the website (potentially Polly Pocket??) had a short blonde ponytail. The website was mainly a retail site for the company but there was a tab to play games on it..

In the game itself, the girl had a car and you could travel to various locations on the map (similar to club penguin) and you could visit friends in different locations. You'd basically go to different locations, to different friends, and find the gems that she'd lost? Or something like that?? The backgrounds of the characters were mostly solid colors.

There was also a water park/beach/some water area as one of the locations. If anyone has any information please let me know, thanks so much!!

thanks !!

EDIT: it wasn’t a virtual pet, just shaped like the tamagotchi. i also sort of remember it having a spongebob mini game on it

[PC][Late 90's/Early 2000's]Top-down crime game (not GTA) where you could be a pick pocket or a con artist.

Platform(s): Windows

Genre: Crime, RPG elements

Estimated year of release: Late 90's/early 2000. It's linked in my memory to this version of Dope Wars but it was probably released later.

Graphics/art style: Top-down, played on an over world map. The map looked semi realistic but it was just a background, the streets didn't restrict your movement. Had round icons to indicate points of interests like hotels, ATMs, fast-food places and I think people too?

Notable gameplay mechanics: You would go around the map and you could do a bunch of criminal things. You could try to con people out of their money. You could pick pocket them. I remember that you could use stolen bank cards at ATMs if they had written their pin down, I think you could even follow people and try to sneak a peak at their pin as they entered it. You could try to sell stolen goods to tourists. You could work at fast food places. You could hide out in hotels when the cops were after you. You also had stats that would improve as you did things.

Other details: Now that I've typed all this out another game popped into my head. It's a 2D menu driven game where you steal cars. You first go to a location, then you pick a car, bump it to see if there's an alarm, pick the lock, hot wire it and drive off. You could get better items and skills to skip some steps or make things easier. I think you could even copy the garage door opener code and steal the car directly from the garage. I think both games were made by the same person.

Wouldn't it be the perfect pocket pen? A piston filling pocket pen made of durable material and with a nice gold nib. It has such a timeless and minimalistic design that it can fit into any person's pocket (the Lamy 2000 is already the favorite of many enthusiasts). I think Lamy would grab the 40% of the monopoly that Kaweco has over the pocket pens. I wonder why they don't even bother producing such a pen instead of making just another special edition safari with just another color which most pen enthusiasts just don't care anymore (at least in my opinion). I would like to read your thoughts and if we get lucky, it would be so cool to get Lamy's attention over this subject.

I remember I used to buy packs of them at Walmart and they were essentially loot crates where I feel like they showed you 1 of the little things but most were obscured. I remember there being a few different colors that corresponded to different things like green was slime and red was fire or rock maybe. There were also some 2 colored ones that were more rare and others that didn’t correspond to the original colors. There may have been some sort of game you could play with them. I remember there being numbers on one of their feet too. The main one I’m picturing was just kind of a large open mouth with 2 arms and 2 legs. They might have been aliens or mutants?

[PC][early 2000's] Victorian themed town covered in snow full of mystery and mechanical puzzles

I've been trying to search for this game for more than 5 years. I still remember playing it on a friend's laptop whenever i went at her house but unfortunately she doesn't remember the name either.

My memories of it are very vague since i was a kid back then but these are some details i still remember:

-the setting was in a victorian town(given the clothing and mechanical parts), however I think it was more on the steampunk side (because i think i remember some kind of oldschool robots?)

-everything was covered in snow and the atmosphere was a bit gloomy

  • it was a puzzle game with mysteries but i can't remember the main plot

-as i said, there were numerous mechanical parts like trains, clocks(lots of 'em) and robots(i think?)

-the main character was a female and i think she was a detective or something

-the graphics were as realistic as u get in an early 2000' game

-the name (i think) included something about Antarctica? I'm not sure about this one, but I'm pretty sure it starts with an A

-I remember the puzzles were kinda complicated since i never got to pass the first chapter

If you can help me find it I will forever be greatful because it's something really close to my heart but too vivid to remember. Thanks in advance!

[2000-2005][PC] First person RPG game based in a desert, in a village where everything was made out of wood.

I will paypal 10 bucks to whoever can find this. I have been looking for this game, without exaggeration, my entire life. I have played it maybe when I was around 4-6 years of age hence why I know so little about it.

From what I can remember, it was a first person RPG looking game, I was placed in a desert, in a village where everything was made out of wood. There were houses and a wooden fence around the village. I distinctly remember being able to pour water for a horse, using a bucket into a water trough. One other thing I also remember is that if you step out of the village, some kind of banshees, or ghosts, or spirits would come and kill you instantly. They were completely black. Perhaps it was some sort of wind.

I cannot pinpoint exactly when the game was made as, but given that it was 3D, it couldn't been before 2000.

EDIT: 24 hour update. The game has not been found yet. I'm raising the reward to 15 bucks if somebody can help me find it. Cheers for all the help so far!

  3. kinda looked like hotwheels
  4. death race (you have to demolish your opponents kinda 5)all cars had abilities, that you can use, there was cool down to it (oil puddle, magnetic ability these are that I remember 6)there were quit a lot of obstacles like trampolines, crushing press, turrets, wrecking balls etc
  5. I roughly remember 2 levels (marsian station with lots of laser sentries and some kind of a paradise island with ramps that you can use to get to different island (there were shark that jumped out of water to prevent you doing the jump)
  6. starter cutscene included race to a volcano and indiana jones style ball chasing cars.

A lot of information, but still could not find the game. Would be happy if you guys help. Peace
