We all have been here before, we are chilling at a party and having a good time, all doing our own things at our own levels of comfort, when someone comes out and announces that "we" are all going to play a board game.
Who is this "we"?
It's already taken me two drinks to feel comfortable talking to people I don't know, what makes you think everyone wants to play your game? Every single time I've been browbeaten into playing or guilt tripped into it. It's highly annoying to me, I was already having fun, what makes you think this will enrich everyone else's time?
This goes for any group activity really. Just let your partygoers enjoy themselves and stop trying to force people into a 3 hour long game of Monopoly.
EDIT: Woah, thanks for all the upvotes and awards. This is the most heated opinion I have ever posted.
Kudos to the people who actually get it, sometimes it feels like too much peer pressure and a very selfish host who isn't treating their guests like guests at all, but more of a captive audience.
Many people can take no for an answer, I am complaining about people who can't. Pressure sucks in these situations. Some people gang up and try to guilt trip you into playing.
Itβs a paradise.
They took a Risk, but now they donβt have a Clue.

"I don't expect everyone to believe that, but while we may not agree with the playlist selections and approach, I'm just going to say again 'making players have no control and have to use swaps' has never once been a thing I've heard. Ever"
Also 343 - Releases game with no selectable playlists and ties progression almost exclusively to challenges.
Only allows non-premium battle pass users to have access to only three challenges at a time instead of four.
Replaces battle pass items for challenge swaps/40 total swaps in battle pass.
Sells challenge swaps in store for real money.
Has deals and promotions with Amazon, Chipotle, Rockstar, kroger/Kelloggs etc. All rewarding players challenge swaps.
The entire design was absolutely built around making players want/need to use challenge swaps.
I'm clearly pointing out the obvious here and I really do love the game but I just don't understand the need to act like it wasn't meant to be this way.. Lol
Edit: Since this post has gained some attention I thought I should make clear that i did not intend this to be a complete complaint post. Although re-reading it It comes off that way. My main intention was to show what the community manager (our main form of official communication) stated and how that statement is contradictory to the obvious design of the challenge system. I'm glad that they are aware changes need to be made and that they are actively working on them. I appreciate the communication and I know he's in a tough spot. However making statements that leave people with more questions than answers and make the community question if you're lying or just incompetent (don't think that's the case) in my opinion is not the right way. I believe him not speaking on it at all would have been better than the statement he made. We all know he's not involved in the design/implementation of systems and he is most likely telling his truth. Unfortunately it just doesn't line up.

Mine is Jaipur! It is designed for only two players, is quick to learn but still complex enough to offer multiple strategies for winning, and is short!
Iβve never met a person who didnβt like this game after playing.
Edit: so many amazing recommendations! Thanks for sharing all, I have a lot of great titles to look into!
Hey everyone! Over the last decade or so I've been creating art for videogames, they've all been free to use (public domain, also for commercial projects without giving attribution).
The last couple of years I kept getting requests from board game designers to create content for them specifically and well - here's the first project! I've gathered requests, created icons and put them in a package, feel free to use them in any sort of project.

Let me know if you've got additional ideas or like to submit your own request, cheers!
So this is pretty trivial but my (M28) girlfriend (F26) and I disagree here pretty strongly. So we were having a game night and I introduced a new board game I played Alot with my siblings as a child, I've always used the red token and I am similar with most board games having a set character. This character is no more special than the rest there are no abilities or anything else to consider. So after about 4 games where I used the same character the whole time my 6yo decided he wanted to use said piece, I told him no that's the piece I use and he can pick another (5 others to choose from). My girlfriend said I needed to share which I disagree with, he wants the piece because it's the one I use, I've used this piece for over 20years without fail. So I want to know AITA
Tldnr played a board game with the family after a few games 6yo wanted to use game piece I have used for 20 years I refused to allow him to.
Edit: I love this sub, Alot of you have stated ITA and I will accept that. I see your point and realise I'm acting childish and hold an unhealthy attachment to certain board game pieces. It's a change that makes me feel uncomfortable to do for some reason but tomorrow I'll let him use that piece is he chooses.
Edit 2: 6yo did not have a tantrum and was slightly upset at most. Argument or slight disagreement was between his mother and I. Also should note although it doesn't make much difference these 4 games weren't in a row but over a few days. Also I can share just fine except for apparently board games I'm attached to from my childhood, I will work on that.
Final Update: we've played again, I apologised and said he may use the red token (miss Scarlett in this case) and we've agreed going forward winner of the last game gets first choice of character. He plays with another adult so this sint unfair, I know if I didn't mention that a bunch of you would complain about that aswell. Some of these comments make me think a lot of you are bigger AH than me tbh
Update: Using this as a TTRPG with magic for combat. Iβm taking our group through the story of all seven Innistrad sets. These decks will be used for all the big moments, bosses, and legendary creatures the party may encounter.
Wanting to make some interesting archenemy decks and scenarios for my group to play against. I want it to be a real challenge and almost puzzle-like in trying to beat it. Iβm against 5 players and really want to start with something on the board some games for an added challenge.
If it matters at all, every player is using almost exclusively cards from any innistrad set and each of them is wielding mono color decks with each player controlling one of the 5 colors. The archenemy deck can use cards from any set and any colors, no limits really.
So what are some mechanically and strategically interesting scenarios, cards, and decks to try and have 5 players team up to overcome?
EDIT: Not looking to win, just trying to create a fun, challenging puzzle of a game state
Any recommendations for board games (card games like cards against humanity) that I can play with my spouse? Most games are for more than 2 players.
It's late, my wife wants me to come to bed, but I wanted to bring up a lot of fun ways to use the Brood Coven ploys to put the hurt on an opponent. I'll probably include a lot more of these in the future, but my squiddly boys have a deep place in my twisted helix heart, so I have to start with them.
Firstly, I hope to all god you're using Cult Ambush on T1. Being able to go "SURPRISE!" and blaze away is just too darned nice. This also combos nicely with...
Underground. Always use it. You can set up your Heavy Gunner or a melee operative in a position where, if you get Initiative T1 (note, get good at Rock/Paper/Scissors), you can just wipe an opponent out. They are far less likely to have 12+ operatives than you are, so hey, you trade up!
Also, I have to point out that there is nothing causing you to be in cover using this Ploy. You can start off just out of 6" away from an opponent in the middle of nowhere so long as you are close to Heavy Terrain. Rush out and charge something important or blast and dash back into cover. If they're being a cheeki breeki and gathering up, you can inflict a LOT of Stun with a Seismic Blaster here.
Fade into Shadows is sort of our Sniper Ploy. You can have your Mining Laser guy obliterate someone, dash back into cover, and then just go "Nah, I didn't shoot."
Crossfire is what you use when you REALLY, REALLY need to bring that one thing down and all you have are a bunch of autoguns. Super-specific, super-useful, you're probably using it every turn if you're running 14 Neophytes (and you should sometimes!).
If you're playing on terrain-dense boards like mine, Lurk in the Shadows can be amazing. I'm of the opinion that everyone should be able to find cover and every movement path should be hard to work out, so it's very easy to see why having an extra success will turn your Kill Team into a far more survivable one.
I am not a big fan of spending a CP for a reroll unless it's game-changing. I'd much rather have a serious distraction Carnifex T1 (seriously) and then buff the defense/and or offense of my KT as I see fit. I do REALLY like the Alpha Strike Torpedo ploys, but eventually they will get played out because people will expect them.
But anyway, that's all I've got for today. Go away now.
With the Christmas season upon us I realised how many people still end up forced to play Monopoly, Clue, or Risk as well as the other outdated games of yesteryear.
With the thousands of good games out there today, what games do you think are the successors to these games? What games tick the box of being broadly accessible to the whole family, and possibly even matching the themes of the original game?
For example I see Mysterium as the successor to Clue/Cluedo as it pretty much involves a group of people solving a murder with the same Person + Place + Object recipe. Additionally, it's also a game I've been able to get an 85 year old the play and follow, as well as small idiot children.
So what are your successors to Monopoly, Risk and the like?

Six months!!!! . They still do not support their own devices. The engineers are clueless.
Hello yall! About a year ago I posted in this sub reddit about wanting to do board games at my wedding instead of a dance floor and got mixed reviews on whether or not it was a good idea. Well my wedding was this weekend and we went with board games and overall it was... A SUCCESS! By the end of the night many of my guest were around tables with a drink and a game laughing and enjoying themselves. We got many compliments from vendors about how respectful our guest were and how it was a fun wedding. If you're looking to do this, the best advice was buying games that took 15-20 minutes that were easy to learn and no sore losers. I would highly recommend :)
Update: The board games we used were: Exploding Kittens, Crabs, throw throw burrito, sushi go, code names, coup, trails, fake artist go to New York, cards against humanity, medium, uno,Catan, ticket to ride, then we also had some poker chips and decks of cards out as well. Most of our guest used ticket to ride, code names, coup, exploding kittens, and cards against humanity, but everything got used at least once. We used long tables instead of circle ones which helped with the flow of the evening, but we ate and.played games all in the same place. The transition into board games helped because me and my husband played the shoe game first to help people get in the mood, we also didn't have time to play time until after dinner. I would say 85% of our guest played at least 1 game. Other just drank and talked with family or left shortly after. We didn't have time to sit and play with anyone, but it was easy to drop in and say hi to all our guest since they were all in one location. I'm happy to answer more questions if they come up!!
Over the last few years this game has become super popular among my friends, but a little piece of me dies every time it is brought out as it typically kills all natural banter, and I get exhausted doing that fake "Oh my God. That's hilarious. I'm dieing" thing.
I get it - we're being a little bit rude, or politically incorrect, or silly, or random or whatever, but honestly it just sends me to sleep.
I'll go first. Poor manuals/rules. I can't stand it. Your game can be the most beautifully crafted product in the world but if I cannot get passed the manual then your game sits on my shelf of shame forever.
Example from today and my reason for making this thread: I got my kickstarter version of Miniquest Adventures, everything look great, and what you get for the $25 they charged is incredible, however their manual is all over the place and makes no sense in a lot of areas. Onto the shelf it went until they release an updated PDF that doesn't cause my nose to bleed trying to figure it out.
I've never understood why people care about patriotism, or even precisely what they mean by it. I cannot fathom why someone would have a different opinion of a politician, or anyone, based on how often they stand in front of a flag, or profess to have a deep care for their country. Even if it was sincere, it wouldn't make the slightest difference to the effect their policies have on their country. Obviously this is done by politicians on all sides (e.g. Starmer in the UK), but it seems particularly characteristic of the right, and the right are far more likely than the left to attack the other for being 'unpatriotic' or 'hating their country'.
But these politicians aren't stupid. They know patriotism has no material consequences, and is just a helpful facade that will help them get more votes if they do it effectively. So why would they keep pushing it other than for that? it also seems to me that at times of crisis and scandal, and when politicians and media need to defend things that are particularly indefensible, they defer to patriotism. When the right want to defend why statues of horrible people are proudly on display, they accuse the left of hating their country. When they want to defend why the UK still has a monarchy, they defer to patriotism. When an American politician wants to build support for a war, they make a big display of 'supporting our troops'.
I think the effect of this is that space in the political discourse that could be spent on real issues is wasted. That the voters who understand politics the least get convinced that the other side just wants their country to do badly. That the votes of a fraction of the population is often fought over by mere displays, rather than any policies specifically aimed at helping that fraction. That debate about controversial issues, like how the poppy in the UK has become associated with militarism, get shut down and robbed of nuance, and devolve into meaningless accusations.
But I've also heard intelligent people try to argue that patriotism is a crucial glue that holds a country together, and I want hear what the strongest possible version of that and other arguments would be.
Edit:
It has been pointed out to me that this is quite Western-centric, and I no longer claim this is true of all parts of the world.
I also recognise that patriotism can inspire acts of self-sacrifice by ordinary citizens for the good of the public, and that in that case it is a genuine feeling that is genuinely ben
... keep reading on reddit β‘Basically title, what game do you think is held back rather than enhanced by the physical nature of board games?
I have a few contenders:
7th continent: pretty obvious, it's fun taking cards out of the box, every card like unwrapping a piece of delicious candy... then you die and have to reset the 300+ plus cards you pulled from the box.
Mage knight: I just need something to keep track of the rules for me. When you watch a 1.5 hour rules explanation, I think you deserve a honeymoon period enjoying the game.
Arkham Horror LCG: I'm just a cheap bastard, no I'm not paying $40 for half a core set (I know they came out with a new core set, but that costs $60 CAD). I'm not paying bloated kickstarter amounts of money for a card game. If I wanted to mortgage my house for a two player game, I'm going to play magic.
Just for bonus, a game that would NOT work as a video game:
Exit series: the sheer creativity of the puzzles utilize the physical medium perfectly, love this series.
