A list of puns related to "Philological Library"
Happy New Year to all, and a special thanks to the mods for this brief foray into some philology!
I have attempted to write this in a way that is accessible and comprehensible to a general reader, as well as attempting to remain relatively concise, and thus there are, of course, areas upon which I can expand or which may necessitate further discussion, and I am happy to do so in the comments.
Without further ado, let us begin.
What is ogham?
Ogham is an alphabet system consisting of notches and lines across a stemline, and it serves as our first written record of the Irish (Gaelic) language, having been in use between 400-600 AD. The system consists of four groups of five letters, with two of the groups protruding out either side of the stemline, one to the left and one to the right; one crossing the stemline diagonally, and the fourth appearing either on the stemline itself, or crossing it. With regards to the image linked above, there is a fifth group that we will be discussing further below.
But, for those familiar with the Irish language, it is immediately apparent that the ogham alphabet provided above contains letters which do not exist in the Irish language: Q, NG, and Z. (With a caveat here that /h/ does exist in Modern Irish, but rarely, primarily as a marker of mutation and in loan words, as it did not exist in early periods of the language.)
This is certainly odd, as why would an alphabet contain letters that do not exist in the language? Why include them if they weren't going to be used?
So where do they come from?
Our sources for ogham: ogham stones
Before answering that question, a bit of background about ogham is needed. Our earliest sources of ogham (5th-7th century) are found on ogham stones. Further information about the previous image.. As you can see, the spine of the stone was frequently used as the stemline for the inscriptions, written vertically, typically from top to bottom, and following the edge of the st

This is The Disturbing Case of Anatoly Moskvin.
Before I get into this, I have a small favour to ask. This write up took a lot of time to research and is actually a script for my latest video. I was told by a friend to post it on reddit, and I would hugely appreciate it if you watched the video version instead. If you do not want to, or prefer reading, if you would you just like the video instead, so I know that people are enjoying my content. (Channel link is in bio) Okay, that is enough talk for now. Time to get right into it.
Born in 1966, Anatoly Moskvin grew up in Russia where he began wandering through cemeteries with his friends while he was a teenager. After graduating from the Philological faculty of Moscow State University, Moskvin became well known in academic circles and was capable of speaking 13 languages.
Fellow academics described Moskvin as both a genius and an eccentric. He has written several books, papers, and translations, all well-known in academic circles. He also occasionally worked as a journalist and regularly contributed to local newspapers and publications.
Moskvin had a deep interest in cemeteries, burial rituals, death, and the occult. He kept a personal library of over 60,000 books and documents, as well as a large doll collection. In 2008, he wrote an extensive series of articles on the history of the local cemeteries that appeared in the paper.
As an adult, Moskvin led a secluded life, preferring to live with his parents and keeping to himself. Later, the reason why he led such a seclusive life was uncovered, leaving all who had known him in shock.
In 2009, locals began to discover the graves of their loved ones desecrated, and sometimes completely dug up. But for nearly two years, the investigatorβs leads went nowhere. Then, On November 2nd, 2011,, Moskvinβs name was mentioned to investigators, who decided to look in his apartment after finding him vandalising a gravestone. What they found there shocked them all.
The 45-year-old lived with his parents in a small apartment. Inside authorities found bodies of 26 girls and women between the ages of 3 and 25, scattered around Moskvin's flat and garage. Video released by police shows the bodies seated on shelves and sofas in small rooms full of books, papers, and general clutter.

Lisril led Alex through the grand halls of the palace, richly decorated with tapestries and frescos detailing the empireβs great history.
βItβll be an early start tomorrow,β he said, βDr. Liang should be expecting us in the morning, then weβll have to hunt down the team planning the power gridβs build-out.β
She nodded, βdonβt forget our commitment with Eli, and we shouldnβt forget to visit the postmaster before leaving; Iβm sure sheβll have an imperial writ ready for us to secure your laborers.β
He gave her a slit-eyed glance, βEli, huh?β
Lisril smirked at him, βyour wife and the Empress are quite close.β
He chuckled, βI noticed, not a bad position to be in.β
She gave him a wide, predatory grin; he had no idea; she told him so and could tell he was trying to make sense of her insinuation.
It was his favorite game, never come out and say what could be revealed slowly by suggestion and insinuation, piece by piece, until finally realization dawned. Only- others played with less facility than he, so it was good fun to find a subject he lacked the keys to understanding.
Besides, he would be amenable when all was said, so she didnβt need to come out with her intentions and resort to persuasion and cajoling. Unless she misread him completely, in which case, well, what was life without risk?
βNow,β she clapped her hands, βthe delegation shall have to wait on you a bit longer; weβre going to meet some of my friends, and then I need to introduce you to my parents.β
He grinned, βyou sure? Iβd hate to embarrass you in front of your family.β
βStop that,β she chided, wrapping her arms around his and pulling him close, βI donβt like it when you speak ill of yourself, even in jest.β
He kissed her cheek, and she reciprocated the gesture, smiling fondly at him, βnow come along, ther

Police also discovered instructions for making the "dolls", maps of cemeteries in the region, and a collection of photographs and videos depicting open graves and unearthed bodies.
