This is a guest post by Robert McCauley, a non-resident senior fellow at Boston Universityβs Global Development Policy Center and associate member of the Faculty of History at the University of Oxford. In this post McCauley argues that comparing bitcoin to a Ponzi scheme is unfair to Ponzi schemes.
Bitcoin is off its all-time high of $69,000 set on November 9, 2021. It suffered a wrenching $12,000 flash crash over the first weekend in December, amid accounts of leveraged positions being closed out. And yet, even at the current price of $49,000, guests on financial TV news continue to tout it as the best-performing asset of the last N years, where N can be just about any number from one to ten.Β They also increasingly judge it as a credible investment in its own right. This contradicts the longstanding sceptical view by many economists and others that what bitcoin really is, in effect, is a Ponzi scheme.
Brazilian computer scientist Jorge Stolfi is one voice who has contended this. His view is based on the following observations: Investors buy in the expectation of profits. That expectation is sustained by the profits of those that cash out. But there is no external source for those profits; they come entirely from new investments. And the operators take away a large portion of the money. All of this rings true true. But in calling bitcoin a Ponzi scheme, critics are arguably being too kind on two counts.
First, bitcoin doesnβt have the same endgame as a Ponzi scheme. Second, it constitutes a deeply negative sum game from a broad social perspective. On the first count, itβs worth assessing how it compares to the original scheme devised by Charles Ponzi.
In 1920, Ponzi promised 50 per cent on a 45-day investment and managed to pay this to a number of investors. He suffered and managed to survive investor runs, until eventually the scheme collapsed less than a year into it. In the largest and probably the longest running Ponzi scheme in history, Bernie Madoff paid returns of around one per cent a month. He offered to cash out his schemeβs participants, both the original sum βinvestedβ and the βreturnβ thereon. As a result, the scheme could and did suffer a run; the Great Financial Crisis of 2008 led to a cascade of redemptions by participants and the schemeβs collapse.
But the resolution of Madoffβ

Since the warriors terrific run to start the season, I'm noticing that the talking heads are increasingly discussing the warriors' making an "all in" trade. Nick Wright has, obviously, been the ring-leader, which, when taken in context, means we should be very skeptical of an all-in trade, since everything Nick Wright says seems to be with the purpose of sabotaging the dubs.
Sporting Logically did a video on it the other day that I caught.
The thing I find curious about these trade click-bait ramblings is that the logic of making a trade, right now, doesn't seem to mention what the biggest talking point around making a trade last year was: the warriors' timeline. The analysts were wrong, the warriors knew exactly what their timeline really was, and they've hit it by arriving earlier than I imagine the front office thought they would.
Here are a few timeline centric thoughts I have on the team:
First of all, the most important player on the roster as far as facilitating a trade goes is Jonathan Kuminga. Any trade in which the warriors take back heavy salary in return would have to include Andrew Wiggins as the outgoing matching salary. This has been a fact of life surrounding the warriors' payroll structure for some time now. The problem is, you don't want to trade Andrew Wiggins. He's your best wing defender, he's upped his 3 point shooting, his offensive game is the perfect compliment to the other pieces the warriors have, and he's bought in. He's not worth the salary, but that also doesn't matter. His being overpaid is a problem for Joe Lacob's luxury tax bill, and nothing else.
Wiggins is a free agent in the summer of 2023. If Kuminga shows a lot this season, and he's ready to take on Wiggins' role next year, I think the warriors make a trade and deal Wiggins. This is sort of a Jimmy G-Trey Lance situation: I feel Kuminga will be the starter as soon as he proves he's ready, and Wiggins is still here because Kuminga is so raw. If you look at the elite physical dimensions, the athletic tools, and the raw talent, Kuminga stepping in for Wiggins, and the later either leaving as a free agent or being trade, makes perfect sense.
It should be noted that the warriors may very well not deal Wiggins. Having Wiggins around an extra year provides a measure of insurance on Kuminga's ups and downs as a young player, and Wiggins leaving as a free agent is not a bad outcome; the money slot vacated by Wiggins would almost surely be consumed,
... keep reading on reddit β‘To start off I wanted to spice it up by including a Kirk trade because its a scenario and I thought it would be fun, and my main goal was to have this be a bridge year between 2023 when we probably draft a franchise QB and what we have right now, I had no interest in losing a ton of talent to be a bottom team but wanted to make sure to add to the really talented young offensive core and give the defense some needed young talent, and for the rest of the season a I went with a split against GB and CHI which landed us pick 13
There are 3 sections, 1st is all the decisions I made(Free agency/trades/coaches/draft), the second would be my projected 53 man roster with this, and the final is my run down of each position and the future given this offseason. So if only one of them you want to see scroll down and dont feel forced to read any section that doesn't sound interesting to you, any feedback would be welcomed
Coaching:
HC: Byron Leftwich: got to be honest havent done much looking at coaches yet but assuming zimmer is fired from what ive heard Leftwich is a top candidate and could bring in that HC that fits us better
OC: James Urban: QBs coach for Baltimore and from what ive watched they always seem to have good QB play regardless of injury which is impressive and I know Lions interviewed him last year so there is interest and thought he'd be a good guy to bring in
DC: Andre Patterson: He's been awesome for us and I feel with Adam Zimmer probably gone giving him the full title only makes sense
Cuts: Michael Pierce: Im a fan of some of the young depth we have at DT like Watts so with Pierce be nearing 30 and being able to free up 6.5 million which nearly puts at 0 I thought it was in the best interest
Restructure: Danielle Hunter: After showing he fully recovered from the neck injury im not concerned about injuries and im not worried about a torn pec affecting him long term so giving him a restructure so he gets the money he deserves is needed to keep around our defensive cornerstone
Trades(not including draft day trades): Kirk Cousins to the Steelers for 1.12 and 3.76: I believe Rodgers gets traded to Denver, and Watson and Wilson im unsure if they get traded and Kirk makes a lot of sense in Pittsburgh especially with how desperate teams get for a QB a 1 and 3 seems reasonable, QBs always go for a high price. And if we want the money to bring some free agents back and capital to really repair this defense this is the easiest move I ca

First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Nothing, he was gladiator.
Following his fatherβs sudden death and accidentally drowning his older brother, six-year-old Viktor Irving is terrified of death. Unable to sleep one night, he wanders the streets and is cursed by a soul-eating monsterβcalled a Grixβpretending to be a homeless man. The curse, disguised as a gift, allows him to see and hear the dead. Desperate to use his βgiftβ, Viktor attempts to resurrect his brother at his funeral. The horrific spectacle drives his mother to suicide, leaving him alone and on the run from the Church of Azevyn and the authorities.
After befriending a ghost while imprisoned in an abusive orphanage, Viktor meets a Grix Hunter. She rescues him after learning whoβand whatβhe is. With her help, he spends several years becoming a Hunter while evading the Churchβs zealots who want him dead. He learns to use his curse as a weapon in order to survive and find the Grix who ruined his life.
But when Viktorβs desire for vengeance results in the death of his only loved one, he must learn to overcome his grief. He must learn to forgive himself before he loses his lifeβand his soulβto the most powerful Grix to ever live.

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
When I got home, they were still there.

Me: nerves building, smile widening
Me: Hi hungry, I'm dad.
She had no idea what was going on but I finally did it.
