An aardvark's nose contains nine olfactory bulbs, more than any other mammal, which are important in locating subterranean termites and ants. Its keen sense of smell derives not just from the quantity of bulbs in the nose but also from the development of its sophisticated cranial olfactory lobe. v.redd.it/q7mkagq1yx381

Will humanity ever be able to match the Theory of Mind of domestic canis lupis? Why do humans excrete hormones to signal their state of mind when humans all have atrophied olfactory bulbs? Why did we evolve to lose our sense of smell (compared to other animals) when it could play such a social role? moderndogmagazine.com/art…

The coronavirus does not appear to infect nerve cells in the olfactory epithelium and in the olfactory bulb

https://www.mpg.de/17907472/corona-sense-of-smell

Scientists at the Max Planck Research Unit for Neurogenetics in Frankfurt in collaboration with physicians and scientists at the University Hospitals Leuven (Leuven, Belgium) and a major hospital in Bruges, Belgium, together with scientists at NanoString Technologies Inc. in Seattle, USA, report that SARS-CoV-2 does not appear to infect the sensory neurons of the olfactory epithelium in COVID-19 patients. Moreover, the team failed to find evidence for infection of olfactory bulb neurons. Instead, the sustentacular cells, also known as supporting cells, are the main target cell type for the virus in the olfactory epithelium. Since SARS-CoV2 spares olfactory sensory neurons and olfactory bulb neurons, it does not appear to be a neurotropic virus.

IAmA congenital anosmiac (have been unable to smell 99% of things from birth), likely due to bad olfactory bulbs, yet can taste perfectly fine (AFAIK), and can enjoy and appreciate most foods. Ask me anything

I thought I may as well have a see if anyone is interested in this sort of thing, and to clear up any potential confusion. Also to show this this is indeed an issue. I haven't been able to find any real treatments or cures, thus no answers, so I thought I'd make some answers of my own.

I have no idea how to prove this, sorry. You'll probably just have to take my word for it. I guess I could post this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anosmia

This is my first time doing this, sorry if I do something wrong.
