Chapter 44 – The fate of the “late” James Aldwin
Several weeks earlier
[As the timer behind him slowly ticked down, James held eye contact with the face on the screen before him, only breaking it to shortly glimpse down at the sheet in his hand containing official answers to the test questions he was providing to his companion behind the camera.
“Hmmm…,” it sounded after a short silence. “Wasn’t it by producing product abundance?”
Nia looked justifiably unsure of her answer while slightly smiling at him through the screen. James didn’t even need to look at the answer sheet to correct her on this one.
“Well, that is one of three ways. And the least effective at that.” he explained. “The answer they are searching for, however, would have been Antisense-Expression.”
Nia moaned loudly and disappeared from the screen before him, presumably having wandered out of her camera’s field of view.
“How am I supposed to remember what methods they used for every single damn organism?” she exclaimed, still out of view, and James could hear her footsteps stomping around her room.
James shook his head, grinning, and put the answer sheet aside for a moment, to give the hothead some time to cool down.
“Aren’t you being a little dramatic?”, he asked while searching the monitor for a sign on which side of her room she currently was. Then he continued, “After all, there are only, like, eight of them. And they are all pre-determined. It’s not like you actually have to learn anything, you just have to memorize it.”
Nia’s head suddenly popped back into view from the left side of the screen and she gave James an angered look. Her dark eyes fixated him through her long eyelashes. Her flat nose was slightly wrinkled and scrunched from her narrowing her eyes so much and she had to remove some braids, that had by now loosened from the tight knot she had tied her dark hair into, out of her face.
Then the rest of her body slowly came back into frame, as she sat back down in front of her camera and put her head in her hands while sighing audibly.
*“You’re saying that like it’s supposed to be easy,” she mumbled without looking back up at him. Jame

Given the detritus strewn about the inside of the shuttle, it was clear Maybel had spent a fair amount of time here. Fortunately for him, it seemed that her amateur investigations into the shuttle’s function weren’t too invasive.Though he strongly believed the cupholder might never work again after what she’d done to it.
“You got the ignition switch?”
He smiled in triumph as the blue skinned woman produced the fob, which he promptly plugged into the main console. His smile only grew as the internal lights came on with barely a flicker.
While that didn’t necessarily mean the vehicle was in a fit shape to fly – he’d yet to turn on the grav-drive yet – it was a step in the right direction.
Slipping into the pilot’s seat, his eyes roamed over the shuttle’s controls.
Not too different from the one on the Whisker, he thought.
Which meant he could probably pilot it well enough for what he needed. Which wasn’t so much a running indictment of his talents as a pilot as it was the relative simplicity of flying a vehicle equipped with an anti-grav system. In many ways, it wasn’t totally unlike driving an automatic car, with only the added complication of an extra dimension to deal with.
Still, he wouldn’t have even been considering this if it weren’t for the fact that Rocket had snuck him aboard the Whisker’s shuttle for a go more than once – and that he was desperate.
Mostly desperate.
The knocking came from the front door again. Louder this time. Maybel glanced at him, but he shook his head. Hopefully whoever it was would go away if they ignored them long enough.
Of course, that was the moment he heard the front door being broken down.
“Well shit.” He turned to look up at the hatch. “Someone’s pretty eager to meet you.”
Maybel winced at the sound of movement from inside her house.
“You focus on getting the sky-ship flying,” she instructed, moving to clamber out of the top hatch. “I’ll go see what my visitors want.”
Before Jason could even think to argue, the Ufrian woman was gone. Seeing little recourse but to do what she asked, he started running through the Shuttle’s pre-flight checklist. Something Rocket had insisted on teaching him in laborious detail. A fact he might have attributed to her seriousness about flight safety were it not for the fact that she’d clearly just been using it as an excuse to lean over him and press her rather ample assets against the back of his head.

The cities of the Unworthy made for the perfect inaugural pyre for the renewal of the Holy Endeavor. They would continue to serve Kra as they had before the Mortification.
He shook his head in thought as he remembered those days. He had been a child when their Endeavor had first begun.
Initially, the Chosen's Holy Endeavor had met with success. Over a period of twenty years, a dozen unclean worlds had been discovered and cleansed, ready for the servants of Kra to purify. Three species of his Unworthy Children had even been fully extinguished! A triumph!
Kra had been pleased by his Chosen Children's attempts to aid his Great Servants, and rewarded them greatly. As their Endeavor progressed, His Great Servants had purified five unclean worlds very close to the Home Systems, each a blank slate, ready to be remade in the image of Kra's greatest work, Krathig-yar.
New homes and resources for the Chosen.
Then, disaster had struck. A large group of Unworthy species had been encountered, that worked together. They began coordinating their forces with others to oppose righteous cleansing. But the true depth of their depravity was revealed when they began employing unholy synthetic life against the Chosen; Thou Shalt Not Create Life, For That Is The Domain Of Kra.
The Chosen had despaired, as their fleets had been destroyed, corrupted by the Unworthy's unholy familiars, and been pushed back to the Home Systems.
It had taken what became known as The Mortification to stop them, so named because it was both a humiliation and a penance. Humiliated by their defeats at the hands of the Unworthy, The Chosen had thrown themselves at their enemy in the millions, using ramshackle, quickly built ships with as little automation as possible to prevent corruption.
It had required the sacrifice of twenty percent of their population to stop the Unworthy, but they had done it. He remembered, as a young priest-captain, watching from the bridge of his ship as their enemy finally withdrew.

Two decades of salvaging and rebuilding their fleet.
But this time, they would not fail. The Mortification had purged the weakness from the Cho

It turns out that it’s more high humidity and rain that turns him on now. So just washing off the gunk and getting himself back to the stark shimmering white of his fur was easy enough. There was the fun game of discovering an entire series of bruises and cramps as his time in the mirror had pushed him well and truly beyond anything his body had ever undergone before. If not for his upgrades then the strain probably would have killed him.
The water seemed to wash away both the filth that had been building up on his person and the small stresses and aggravations of the day to day. He hadn’t let them do anything to him, the mission of contacting The Dauntless was too important. But it felt as if he was shucking a backpack full of rocks for all the weight it seemed to lift from him.
“So the Urthani cleanliness is somewhere between biological and psychological?” He asks himself as he steps out of the water and stretches. He had cleaned his clothing, cleaned his fur and claws and reshaped the metal of his gauntlets into less nicked and banged up defences and more ornate and still effective tools of both offence and defence.
He runs the Axiom over his body and gathers the water up to flick it into the diverted stream. It was actually rather clever. The kitchens were upstream, the dumping area downstream and between where people took their water for food and medicine and where they dumped out the trash was the bathing area. Cool water and you were responsible for warming it yourself or just letting it stay cold as Jasper had.
He glances left and catches little hint of the grime and dirt that had been building on him. During most of the bathing there had been a streak of deep brown so dark it was effectively black. How the hell he had gathered that much dust and dirt without it showing was a form of mundane magic all it’s own. Like when you brush a fluffy dog and end up with more shed fur than the dog had body mass, either before or after the brushing.
He extracts the water from his outfit and then slips it all on. He’ll need more clothing, both off and on duty. Proper armour, some real weapons with ranged options. His claws are powerful and brutal, but he’ll need to take some people alive, and he’s not sure if a bow can survive his pulling back on the string.
Still, first things first. Get in contact with The Dauntless. Coming here was a long shot, but his only one. He had actually grilled Magrica a few times and inquired with the

“Captain, that thing is still out there, who knows who else it will try to turn into a meal!” a pair of umber skinned Nighkru twins, Krella and Belka, interjected. “This isn’t just about Tenka, but everyone of us who guards the outer wall or works the night shift is in danger!”
“I know," Vii'a sighed. "But I don’t have enough mercenaries to send off at the last minute to either take your places, or go after it for you. I need to make sure that this base is secured at all times, especially now that we have a brig full of angry protestors all demanding to see their lawyers!”
The older cyborg scoffed as she ran her silver robotic hands through her snow white hair before looking to the crew before her. “I mean, do any of you know the first thing about hunting large predators?”
“I do, and I’m very proficient in doing so too.” Ara the lone Rakiri stated, to no one’s surprise.
“I’ve gone on trips with Ara before.” Miztana shrugged, also not much of a surprise considering how close the two were.
“I’ve done some here and there when on leave.” Haelga shrugged, brushing her bangs out of her eyes.

“Four out of six.” Gray called out, “I’m still here, Vii’a.”
The group split down the middle and turned towards the voice of the sole male on base, Vii’a staring in a mix of disbelief and alarm.
“Oh, I am absolutely not allowing this!”
“Why?” Gray challenged, stepping through the group to stand off against his ex. “I have experience in hunting big game and large predators since I was big enough to hold a rifle.”
“I don’t care, you’re not going, and that’s an order!” Vii’a snapped, squaring up to the slightly larger Human male.
“With all due respect, Captain, I think this has less to do with needing all hands on deck, and more a conflict of interest.” Gray said cooly, staring down at the gray elf alien, “It’s not because I’m unqualified, you have my file. My name is Olivia March. My friends call me Livia. Before I had my own lab, I was a postdoc at the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA. My mentor was Dr. Audrey Fang, a brilliant woman and one of the pioneers of synthetic biology. I thought that Dr. Fang would open doors for me. Instead, she ruined my life.
This story starts on May 18, 2012, with a man named Dr. Leonard Lonsdale. I was new to NASA, and, as usual, I was running late.
I arrived at the auditorium midway through Dr. Lonsdale’s lecture. I wasn’t totally sure what it was about, or why it was relevant to what I was working on. But, once a month, Ames has its various Principal Investigators give talks to the whole campus, and, for the purposes of inter-lab camaraderie, Dr. Fang insisted that I go.
Luckily for me, my boyfriend, Davis Zhou, had saved me a seat. He was sitting near the back of the auditorium, looking very much like a coder in his cargo shorts and ratty hoodie (don’t judge, okay?). “Where were you?” he whispered as I sat down next to him. I muttered an apology and settled in for the rest of the talk.
Apparently, Dr. Lonsdale was a planetary geologist, studying the way geological features like continents and mountain ranges arise on Earth and beyond. He flicked to a new slide, titled “TIME”.
“We humans have a tragically myopic view of time,” he said. “We can only think of time frames in the context of our own, short lives. Our species, Homo sapiens, has existed for twenty thousand years. If you think of a person today living until one hundred: that’s only two hundred of their lifetimes. Two hundred people, chained, would take us back to the dawn of humanity. That’s fewer people than are in this auditorium right now.”
Beside me, Davis was nodding vigorously. Dr. Lonsdale continued: “Compare that to geologic time. Rather than measuring time on a human scale, we measure it according to the fossil record. The oldest era, the Paleozoic, began five hundred million years ago. Five million human lifetimes. Twenty five thousand times longer than humanity itself. And even that is woefully short. The earth itself is more than four billion years old—no matter what the creationists may tell you!”

Eighty minutes until the teleportation spell was ready.
Rob paced back and forth across an empty street on the outskirts of Elven territory. Orn’tol and Zamira were facing away from him, keeping their watchful eyes on Broadwater’s empty streets. They didn't actually need to be on the lookout, as the Blight’s entry attempts were always heralded by a hideous sound that could be heard from one end of Deserter territory to another, but his pacing was making them nervous. Rob was aware of the effect it was having on them, but found that he couldn’t stop even if he wanted to. Sensory overload was pulling his limbs along like a puppeteer tugging at strings. The half-healed nerves in his arm were tingling, the Corruption within was burning, the sun was beating down on his face, and the anticipation of how the next few hours would play out was wreaking havoc on his mental state.
Something was going to happen. Something always happened.
The Blight tended to make entry attempts just a little away from the Deserters – presumably to give its spawn time to mature – but that left a wide area to cover, and it was unlikely that Rob’s trio would be the first to defend against new incursions. His group was formed for the purpose of responding to entry attempts as they came, which is why it consisted of himself, Zamira, and Orn’tol, three of the highest-Dexterity members in the Deserters. Group B consisted of Keira, Taleya, and a Ranger named Harkin, who were situated on the opposite end of Deserter territory. Both of their groups were positioned to cover as much ground as possible. It was a strategy they'd implemented three days ago, and so far, it had worked like a charm. At least one group was always able to respond to an entry attempt in short order.
But ‘in short order’ wasn’t ‘immediately’. Odds were that either some of the Rangers or some of the Fiends would be closer to any given entry attempt, and they couldn’t afford to wait for reinforcements. Not when leaving the Blightspawn to their own devices could result in unchecked mutating and multiplying. As a consequence, Rob had barely arrived in time to prevent casualties from occurring on two occasions now, and that was with his new boost in Dexterity. The way those situations could have played out were weighing on his

"We have just received a communique from the Bodargon. They have challenged us for the Thea 5274 system."
"Challenged? What, are they claiming it's part of their territory?"
"The translators say it's more of a declaration that they will take the system from us by force."
"Sounds more like a declaration of war to me, then."
"Well, yes. But the translators caution that their translations may still be incorrect."
"Don't tell me. They always say that. I would too if the outbreak of an interstellar war depended on my translations. Well, I don't want it either. Forward it to the government, and it's their problem."
"Will do."
"Oh, and give the fleet a heads-up too. Unofficially of course."
"Of course."
Two weeks and 150 light-years later. Flag bridge of the UNS James, flagship of the second human fleet.
"How long until we reach Thea 5274?"
"We are leaving hyperspace in ten minutes, Sir!"
"Good. Fleet status?", Admiral Robertson asked.
"All ships report ready for battle, Sir!", Communication officer Jon Howard answered.
That was the fourth time in ten minutes, Jon thought to himself. The admiral is just as nervous as all of us. No wonder though. It will be the first confrontation between a human fleet and an alien one, ever. Who knows what is going to happen.
After way too much time the navigation announcement finally sounded from the bridge speakers, "Leaving hyperspace in 5...4...3...2...1...Drop!".
Deep inside the ship, Jon noticed nothing of the giant energies set free by the transition from hyperspace. Just a flicker from the status indicator in the corner, and they were 2 light-hours from Thea 5274, a K-Type star in the middle of nowhere.
"What's the status?"
"Looks empty. There's the colony station above Thea 3, and some smaller ships between it and the asteroid belt, probably miners. That's it.", came from navigation.
Jon could feel the tension leave the bridge crew. "Seems like we were fast enough. Contact the colony.", the admiral ordered.
"Yes, Sir. Based on our distance we expect an answer at the earliest in 3 hours, 55 minutes."
"Good. Direct course for Thea 3. And tell the fleet to reduce readiness."
3 hours and 58 minutes later, Jon glanced at his screen again, waiting for an answer from the Thea 3 colony. They had already picked up

As the corpse of the Kiroscha's leader fell to the ground, the bridge became silent. The princess couldn't do much more than sit there and stare in disbelieve at the scene that had just unfolded in front of her. Her gaze went from the leader to the other soldier, over the pools of blood that had formed, until her eyes met with those of the small alien. Even though she was kneeling in the ground, Silgvani was still about half a lyne taller than it.
As the two looked at each other in silence, the alien's breathing became heavy and ragged. Its blood-stained hands started to shake, its eyes darted left and right as if it itself couldn't comprehend the situation. It then grabbed its head as if it were in pain, smearing purple all over its pink face. Finally, its eyes rolled up and it collapsed to the ground, its body hitting the ground with such a heavy impact that Silgvani could feel the vibration in the metal floor. Then, it got silent once again.
The princess couldn't tell if it had been just a few tiggs or a whole inva until the door opened again and Doctor Githaiy entered.
"Your Highness! You're alive!" she then saw the unconscious alien and rushed to its side. "Nadine! Nadine, can you hear me?!"
Seeing a familiar face - and more importantly, seeing her alive - finally allowed the princess to pull herself together.
"Nadine. Is that its name?"
"Yes, she is unconscious again, but her breathing is steady, so I assume she is otherwise fine. Or well, at least I hope so. I don't know enough about her to make more than an educated guess."
"I see. In that case, I would appreciate it if you could find the time to uncuff me AND EXPLAIN WHAT IN THE NAME OF THE FIRST ONES I JUST WITNESSED!"
The startled doctor sprang up and hectically freed the princess.
"I-I'm very sorry, Your Highness!" Githaiy apologized before recounting the events with Nadine, up to the point where she killed the first Kiroscha.
"So... she is a civilian?"
"Yes."
"Yet she has experience with killing?"
"She has not", the doctor corrected and continued her story. Confused, the princess cocked her head.

Greetings everyone and welcome to the year 2022! And to the first report of the year and the first report of the Omen of Storms meta.
As usual i focus more on the ladder than the competitive metas and in general there is a lack of hard data, so i use a variety of sources to piece together a general picture of the metagame.
With that said, let us dive into the very first meta report of the year!
Forestcraft
In the great woods of Forestcraft, where all manner of beasts frolick beneath the mighty canopies. The first assembly of Forestcraft leaders has begun with everyone present.. except Arisa. Who is too busy spending time with Losaria, and rumours say.. holding hands with. Though Ladica doesn't see the big deal in that as she's held hands with her many times.. and several others. Causing Liza to shush her very aggressively.
For Forestcraft Sekka Forest leads the way, followed by Evolve Forest and Ladica Forest.
Forestcraft finds itself in a fairly solid position as is possible under the Shadow of well.. Evolve Shadow. With several strong additions plus support for Evo Forest, the class in theory comes off well. That said, the usual things holding it back besides Shadowcraft are also in play, like how the class being more skill intensive tends to be a factor that curtails in popularity on ladder as well.
Striking with the fury of the forests
A midrange deck built around Sekka and Fairies. Off to a fairly strong start thanks to the addition of Armataz and Seed Barrage, some decks have also experimented a bit with Piercye, though those remain a minority. Overall these new additions have effectively accelerated the deck, making it stronger. But not strong enought to contend with the nr 1 deck in the meta. Evolve shadow, which is faster than Sekka Forest and which sekka forest can't disrupt either.

It's not because the actors all seem bored out of their minds, though that's definitely one factor.
The main reason is because they're just retreading old ground and trying to "fix" it by doing it live-action. Imagine if we got an animated James Bond movie... and instead of adapting an unadapted short-story, or making a new story that tries to take advantage of the medium, just is a remake of "The World is not Enough" shot-for-shot and beat-for-beat and the differences only being the occasional nod to bad faith critics or "See? I fixed this flaw in the original that was pretty incremental." People wouldn't hate it because it's animated, they'd hate it just because it's just retreading "The World is not Enough". (Also I just looked up a random James bond movie and picked it from a list - that's why I thought of that.)
The live-action remakes are always at their best when they're trying to do something different than the original. You're not "fixing" the original by making it in live-action anymore than Tom and Jerry "fixed" Wizard of Oz or Willy Wonka by animating them (and occasionally having Tom&Jery fight with each other). Like, the Jungle Book was actually alright - because it wasn't trying to just copy the original movie. Cinderella varied between "Meh" and "Huh, cool" and the latter moments were always when it wasn't just being the original. (ie the interesting costumes) and the only parts of the other live-action remakes were when they were trying to do something differently... and the costumes&dances in Aladdin I will admit. (It's really hard to do a Bollywood or Broadway dance number where people don't look like they're having fun.)
There was a better remake of Aladdin called "Wish Dragon". Because they were trying to tell a classic story of "The Liar revealed" and "People will love you for who you are" but they weren't just copying Disney and the dozens of other movies that used those formula - Sony and Tencent were trying to be just make own thing.
My second story on here. This one was fun to think up and i hope you enjoy the concept as much as I have.
“Hello students. I am glad you are all here and congratulations on almost completing your final year at the Greater Galactic Medical institute”
Xen took a minute to finish taking in the gathered crowd of eager students form the fifteen or so species that made up the known galactic community.
“you might not know me so to properly introduce myself I am Doctor Xen; I was part of the first contact team that for the past four years has been working with the humans on bringing them into our united group.”
At this many of the students started murmuring, xen had expected this. Humans were still new to much of the galaxy and were quite the topic of debate and wonder. Due to the fact that they came from Sol 3 a class 12B death world, No doubt the stories that they told and that were told of them supported this ridiculous notion. Soon the room quieted down, and a couple of students raised their hand as expected of young and inquisitive minds.
“Please save your questions for later as my topic for today will hopefully answer some, and most likely give you ten-fold more than you had, as learning about humans usually tends to.”
At that many of the students did their equivalent of a nervous laugh, and those with their hands up put them down. A couple of seconds later the room was quiet.
“To start off it is important that you understand something fundamental about humans that applies in every aspect of their lives, this is that there is no steadfast rule that can lock humans down. There are trends and things that are more common but there is always something that will bend or break that trend.”
The mutters from the room confirmed that many of the students had gathered this from the stories that had filtered out to the community about the absolute chaos that humans could bring.
“That is not what I am here to talk to you about today. I have been brought here to give advice to all of you and a warning to some. You see after the usual diplomatic dance, when our peoples started sharing information with the humans, my medical team noted something unique about their body that sets them apart from all other known sentient peoples.”
Xen took a moment to look over the group gathered before him now as quiet as a statue, he knew that they were wondering what further oddity of the humans he was about to explain to them.
“There is no definitive term for this yet

By determining a BATNA you’ll have more confidence because you have a backup plan if the negotiation doesn’t work out. Because of this, you won’t feel forced to make a bad deal.
Going into any negotiation, it’s important to have a clear understanding of your BATNA. If you’re negotiating with a supplier, be sure about the pricing of alternative suppliers. If you’re negotiating over salary, your alternatives might be a different job offer.
For example:
Mark, a procurement manager of a large supermarket is negotiating with a supplier of canned food. The supplier offers to deliver 100,000 pieces for a price of $1.50 within two weeks. The procurement manager knows that a different supplier offers the same product for $1.40, therefore Mark knows this offer is worse than his BATNA and he shouldn’t agree.
Before your negotiation, it’s important to plan. Key things you should have a clear answer to:
It is very important to think about these things thoroughly. Too many negotiations fail because people get worried about being taken advantage of that they forget what they really need. It’s silly to only focus on preventing the other party from winning, instead focus on your own goals.
In most negotiation situations you will have a continuing relationship with the other person. That’s why it’s important to come to a mutual feeling of ‘winning’ for both parties. If the other person feels like he lost, he might lack commitment in the execution phase of the deal. Or even worse, he will be after retaliation.
Research shows that the way you approach a negotiation has a key role in the process of the negotiation. If you aim for a win-win outcome, the chances of this result will be significantly higher.
To accomplish this, it’s critical to put yourself in the shoes of the other party. What are their goals? Their interests? By doing this, you’ll be able to turn win-lose situations into a win for both parties.
This includes creating additional alternative solu

UPDATE UPDATE: I just saw a NEW NEW gynecologist today, one that was on the NAMS list. The nurse was so lovely AND THE DOCTOR LISTENED. She followed along with what I had to say, gave me understanding and agreeing nods, and asked me what I was thinking and what I wanted to do. I told her I definitely think estrogen would really help me out right now and she agreed. She gave me an estrogen gel sample, and recommend some supplements to help. She even threw in some stuff to help with my vaginal dryness. Had me do labs and wants to see me back in two weeks and commented that she's really really excited to see how everything goes! That's always a great sign! Thank you all SO MUCH!
Update: So I saw another gynecologist, and she said that if I'm still having periods, even if they're irregular, then I can't just get on estrogen, and that it's not early menopause. Aren't there plenty of you still having periods along with symptoms? Also hinted that I'm too young. She said progesterone levels are irrelevant and only FSH matters as well. This sounds completely wrong. What the actual hell. Am I ever going to get proper treatment?! I'm so fed up. This isn't cookie cutter for everyone and I thought you had to look at the whole picture not just FSH. And even then FSH isn't the 100% deciding factor. My testosterone and estrogen are already a bit low. What else do I need to be doing here to get through to doctors? What doctor did you see to get hrt? I told her I don't want birth control because the progesterone makes me feel horrible and I don't want to block the estrogen I have. As I tried to explain she was like waved me off and said "oh they're all pretty much the same." Meaning birth control. Super quick to rush me out as well. AND she fucking told me that estrogen does nothing for your mood, and only effects your libido. 🤬
I also called another place and they said they don't see women under 35 because, I MIGHT WANT CHILDREN! WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?!
