Roll out of new Caledonian Sleeper stock delayed. Again.

If you've been following this story they converted the Lowlander sleeper (London - Glasgow/Edinburgh) to new stock on 28th April and the Highlander sleeper (London - Fort William/Inverness/Aberdeen) was due to follow in the coming weeks.

I'm booked on the Highlander at the end of September and was looking forward to sleeping in the new stock but I got an email from them this morning that read in part:

> We are contacting you regarding your journey booked with us for travel on our Highland services in the coming weeks.

> Unfortunately, we are very sorry to have to inform you that due to a delay in the availability of our new trains, we will not be able to operate our new fleet on your journey. We recognise that this is disappointing news and we apologise for this.

> We will instead, be running our current trains and can therefore still ensure you get to your destination and experience our excellent levels of service and hospitality on board.

>Our decision to put back the introduction by a few weeks has been taken to allow CAF, the manufacturer, to complete the further work required on the carriages to ensure that they are fit for purpose to be accepted into service. This is intended to ensure that when they do enter service our guests have the best possible experience. We will be confirming a new date for introducing our new trains on our Highland routes as soon as possible.

(Interesting definition of the words a few weeks there BTW given that my booking is in about 14 weeks time but whatever.)

Judging by recent tweets it looks like they've been having issues with the new stock on the Lowlander service so I'm not that surprised that they're now delaying the second phase of the roll out but from memory I think they were already about a year late introducing the new stock but it now looks like they're going to be nearer 18 months.

Ho hum.

So the bad news is that I'll be in the old rolling stock on my next trip and it was already showing its age last time I travelled in April (as, after all, why would they maintain stock they were expecting to discard in a couple of months) and I had to be moved to a new cabin as water was pouring in to my original one (I wasn't the only person moved either).

The only good news is that they're refunding me about 20% of the price of my ticket on trip which will save me Β£40.

They were very excited beforehand tweeting photos at Inverness.

Sadly however there were power problems near Preston which affected both the southbound Highlander and northbound Lowlander and the Highlander is currently due into Euston over 90 minutes late which is an inauspicious start.

Serco must be spitting blood as it wasn't their fault ... this time.
