Early April, 1984, space shuttle Challenger mission STS-41C launched. This was the first on-orbit repair of a satellite. Here, crew members train for their repair tasks in NASA Marshall Space Flight Centerβs Neutral Buoyancy Simulator. The simulator prepared astronauts for extra-vehicular activities

Hippos' bones are extraordinarily dense due to the replacement of porous bone with more compact bone. This means their bones act as a kind of ballast to help them achieve neutral buoyancy underwater: they are well-adapted to their amphibious lifestyle

Does anybody know how to find out how much water you need in a ballast tank for neutral buoyancy?
I want to build a replica of a submarine from a game I play, but I donβt know how much I will need to fill the ballast tanks. Can anyone help me out?

I'm interested in what kind of helmet this is that the astronauts wear for their NBL water survival training:

Sharks do not have a swim bladder and instead use oils produced in their liver to aid in buoyancy. Some sharks are harvested for these oils which are used as dietary supplements, despite having no clinical research supporting their supposed benefits to human health.

Did you have to make a buoyancy aid with your pyjamas when you were at swimming lessons?
Husband and I having an arguement. I was doing a 'bit' about how no shipwreck survivor had ever said 'oh thank goodness I learned to tie a knot in my pyjamas and make an air pocket in swimming lessons, I wouldnt have survived without it ' and he looked at me like I was crazy - please tell me I'm not crazy and this was actually a thing and my instructor Keith wasn't just a weirdo!
