A list of puns related to "Mormonism and polygamy"
I'm not a fan of McKeever's mental gymnastics with regard to conditional morality by glossing over polygamy in the old testament. It's also funny that McKeever and the 15 men who lead Brighamite mormonism from Salt Lake City are both adamantly opposed to restoring polygamy as a matter of civil rights. It's funny how right wing causes start to line up. Is the enemy of my enemy my friend?
Why is polygamy more acceptable now than in the past? McKeever proposes a rise in secularism. However, the series Big Love and Sister Wives humanized polygamists. Warren Jeffs-styled polygamy with tax avoidance, underage marriages, and child trafficking would still garner much less support than unions involving consenting adults only.

Why? It was just as wrong within the cultural context of its time then as it is now. In fact, it was more immoral by Victorian standards. Why did early leaders lie about it if it was somehow acceptable within its historical and cultural context? Why do apologists think people stormed that jail in Carthage?. Because people recognized it as immoral then, just as they do now.
Presentism is no reason to defend the indefensible.
I was a faithful member for over 30 years but have only really started to understand Mormonism in the last few years since leaving. Every time I think I have heard it all, I discover some new fact that blows my mind.
Today I was following some links when I found this gem. I was aware of the colonies in Chihuahua Mexico but had no idea about their founding. From the link:
[I]n 1882 the Edmunds Act was passed by the United States Congress. This was part of the by-then 20-year struggle by the U.S. government to curb the LDS practice of plural marriage in Utah Territory... In 1885 President John Taylor purchased 100,000 acres of land in Mexico. This act allowed over 350 Latter-day Saint families who practiced polygamy from Utah and Arizona to settle land in Mexico. This was a very strenuous task, but it allowed the men the opportunity to keep their multiple wives without being fined and jailed.
I'm starting to wonder if the day will ever come that the Mormon church and it's dark history will cease to amaze me.
Big shout out to u/ldsdiscussion as I found this on the very well presented and sourced website www.ldsdiscussions.com.
We are accused here of polygamy,... and actions the most indelicate,
obscene, and disgusting, such that none but a corrupt and depraved
heart could have contrived. These things are too outrageous to admit
of belief;... I shall content myself by reading our views of chastity
and marriage, from a work published by us containing some of the
articles of our Faith. 'Doctrine and Covenants,' page 330... Inasmuch
as this Church of Jesus Christ has been reproached with the crime of
fornication and polygamy, we declare that we believe that one man
should have one wife, and one woman but one husband, except in the
case of death,..."' (A tract published by John Taylor in 1850, page 8;
found in Orson Pratt's Works, 1851 edition)
In 1850, John Taylor had married twelve polygamous wives. The
following is a list of those wives and children they eventually bore
him:
Leonora Cannon, md 1833, 4 children
Elizabeth Kaighin, md 1843, 3 children
Jane Ballantyne, md 1844, 3 children
Anna Ballantyne (Allen), md 1844, separated 1845, divorced 1852
Mary A. Oakley, md 1845, 5 children
Mary A. Utley, md 1846
Mary Ramsbottom, md 1846
Sarah Thornton (Coleman) md 1846, div 1852
Lydia Dible (Granger Smith), md 1846
Ann Hughlings (Pitchforth), md 1846
Sophia Whittaker, md 1847, 8 children
Harriet Whittaker, md 1847, 3 children
He had also been married to Mercy R. Fielding (Thompson Smith) for 2
years, 1845-1847.

I've been reading on this subject for a while and I'm getting a lot of confusing and contrasting answers. Maybe I'm asking the wrong question...or maybe there isn't even a short Yes/No answer to this question at all, but I thought I try.
All I want to know is this. Does the main Mormon temple in UTAH have an official policy on this matter? I'm not asking if this practice is frowned upon, or not encouraged...or anything along those lines. Is there a clear and definite modern official policy?

> On Thursday, Noel gave a speech on the House floor in support of his HB99. He called polygamous sects "Organized crime" and complained that the public confuses polygamous groups such as the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with his church.
> Asked to state the church's position on it, Hawkins wrote: "The practice of polygamy remains strictly prohibited in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When it comes to laws governing polygamy, the church's primary interest is in looking after potential victims of such associations."The church is concerned that reducing the perceived seriousness of this criminal activity sends the message that such abuses are not serious criminal offenses.
> LDS Church support for keeping polygamy a felony motivated polygamists at the 2016 protest.
> Debates over the bills last year and this year also have highlighted the complicated relationships between polygamy and the LDS Church.
> Many people from polygamous families choose to get baptized in the LDS Church, including two of Darger's children.
> Darger said Noel's statements show how the LDS Church should engage in a dialogue with lawmakers and polygamists about the proper way to address polygamy.

... keep reading on reddit β‘So I went grocery shopping the other night with a few of my friends. Two are mormon, the other gal is not. One of the mormon girls started talking about politics and then it turned into polygamy. She went on and on about how horrible it is and that she couldn't believe that used to be legal. I just really wanted to tell her about Joseph Smith and how many wives he really had and all of the terrible things that happened... but no. I didn't want to argue about it and break her shelf. π€¦ββοΈ
