I'm taking my kids to Brownsville for spring break; I'm wondering about the best places for birding (and/or herping--hmm TX indigo snakes and speckled racers!) out of the various state parks and national wildlife refuges.
I have to go to the Laguana Atasocosa since it has beaches annd my kids love beaches, and the Santa Ana refuge has that huge suspended bridge that just looks awesome...but are there other hot spots in that time frame? And any ideas what's likely to be seen? I know green jays and chacalacas and white tipped doves are common.
We're returning home via the hill country, and I'm thinking about stopping at the Balcones Canyonlands NWR for a day or so; eat and sleep at Marble Falls. Anyone have experience there? I went once during a work trip but it was a short visit and I didn't see much

It looks like there is more border wall being possibly built. The US Customs and Border Protection wants your comments and advice on what kind of impact more miles of wall might do to the lowest three counties of Texas (Starr, Hidalgo, and Cameron). Please help out the community by reading this pdf and providing comments by the end of August. Hopefully the government will heed our advice and come to a compromise!

CBP plans on building about 95 miles of wall along the US/Mexico border. I recently left the Valley after finishing a master's. The nature down there was amazing and the people were so friendly! Please help me protect my past home and many other's current homes.
