Why didn't the United States occupy/annex Cuba in the aftermath of the Spanish American War?

In regards to imperialism around 1890's and early 1900s, why did the United States not annex Cuba? The U.S. was eager to control places like Hawaii and post Spanish American War territories so I wonder why they didn't go all the way and occupy Cuba as they did in the Philippines, Puerto Rico, etc.

The Southeast is one of the best places to live in the United States.

The Southeast is one of the best places to live in the United States.

There’s beautiful scenery, affordable living, and all around pretty solid people. Don’t listen to people on here that say it’s a breeding ground for hateful people, cause it’s really not. Unless you’re in the backcountry with some weirdos then you’re usually not going to encounter people like that.

There’s also great culture everywhere. Atlanta is the hip hop capital of the world. New Orleans doesn’t even need an introduction with all the amazing food and parades. Tennessee was one of (if not the) first states to offer free community college as well.

And the south isn’t actually some place where everyone has a farm or some shit in most areas. I live in the south and I’m not friends with anyone that has a farm nor do I know anyone that has a farm, and I don’t even live in an urban area either.

Overall it’s an awesome place to live where you’ll be hard pressed to not find something to enjoy.
