In 2015, 29-year-old Alicia Hummel went fishing at Myron Grove of Clay County, South Dakota. Her body was discovered by an employee in the Missouri River during the afternoon. An autopsy determined that Alicia had drowned and suffered contributing wounds. Alicia’s death was ruled a homicide.

On June 1, 2015, 29-year-old Alicia Hummel, a preschool teacher from Sioux City, Iowa, kicked off her summer vacation by fishing on a warm, sunny day at Myron Grove of Clay County, South Dakota. The drive is just an hour northwest from her home in Sioux City and is located about seven miles west of Vermilion, South Dakota. Alicia was familiar with the area as she had attended and graduated from the University of South Dakota in 2012.

Alicia’s loved ones described her as a β€œsmart,” β€œsuccessful,” and β€œspontaneous,” young woman who had a heart of gold. On the morning of June 1st, Alicia asked her friends if they would like to join her for her fishing trip, but they all declined. Alicia decided to go fishing alone. Friends noted that it wasn’t unusual for Alicia to partake in activities by herself. Fishing was one of Alicia’s many favorite activities, and she often went alone. One friend of Alicia’s, Bethany Svacina, said that Alicia was always one for spontaneous adventures, recalling the times that Alicia spontaneously planned day trips such as concerts and sightseeing just hours in advance.

The timeline of Alicia’s last movements come from friends, family, and Alicia’s usage of the popular social media app β€œSnapchat.” Prior to leaving, Alicia asked her grandfather, Duane, if he would be interested in helping her clean any fish she caught when she returned home later that afternoon. Duane agreed, not knowing it would be the last time he would see his granddaughter alive. Later, While on her way to Myron Grove, Alicia stopped at a Wal-Mart. There is no information regarding what particular Wal-Mart location Alicia went to, whether or not she made any purchases, and if she did, what she bought. It is also unknown if she had been captured by CCTV, but according to Alicia’s younger sister, Emily, it was learned that Alicia stopped at a Wal-Mart β€œaccording to her Snapchat.” Later, Alicia uploaded a few more selfies to Snapchat, where she was posing with her fishing rod on the boat dock at Myron Grove. Alicia was the only one who was in the photos. Alicia was in contact with some of her friends through Snapchat and had mentioned that there were other people near her at her fishing location, so though nobody was captured in the background of her photos, it is believed she wasn’t in a remote or isolated location.

There are discrepancies concerning the time which Alicia’s body was first discovered. The NBC article states that Alicia’s body was discovered around

In the wake of South Dakota v. Wayfair, can states collect sales taxes on behalf of counties and municipalities as well as the state's sales tax?

I'm in a graduate-level computer science class, and our semester project is to create an online shopping website. One of the requirements is, of course, that the customer can check out and have the sales tax displayed to them. I figured it would be as easy as looking up tax rates for each state (and maybe each county), but then I come across city tax rates and, namely, the recent South Dakota v. Wayfair ruling.

When I research the ruling itself, I find that it allows states to collect their state's sales tax; however, some state laws enacted in the wake of the ruling (such as Wisconsin's) call for the collection of county and district taxes as well.

My project isn't going to become a real website, and I could easily get away with just the state tax, but I would like to at least try to make it reflect reality. Under South Dakota v. Wayfair, can states collect sales taxes on behalf of counties and municipalities?

An open letter to the local, county, and state leadership of South Dakota.

As we close out 2020 and enter 2021, we find ourselves in a world of unprecedented events. We are facing one of the gravest public health crises of our lifetimes and staring down a political divide in this country that has left deep wounds in many aspects of our daily lives.

As we enter 2021 there will be more challenges ahead, and more tough decisions to make, each one of us. Our state has established the importance of freedom and personal responsibility on both the local and national stage. Governor Kristi Noem said "I'm going to continue to trust South Dakotans to make wise and well-informed decisions for themselves and their families. I'm also asking that we all show respect and understanding to those who make choices we may not agree with." This sentiment was echoed by Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken when he stated "We are a state that values personal freedoms, and values liberties … β€œ. These values have been re-stated and echoed by our leaders repeatedly over this past year. I ask that you take these values as a guiding principle as you lead our citizens in the coming years.

On November 3rd, 2020, our citizens made their will known when we went to the polls and approved Amendment A and Initiated Measure 26. These issues clearly crossed partisan separations, generations, and all ways of life. The fact that South Dakota made history as the first state to pass simultaneous measures on both medical and recreational use sends a clear message by our voters. To echo Governor Kristi Noem's words, while we may not agree with the choices the citizens of South Dakota made, we MUST understand and respect them. Any action to subvert the will of the voters on these laws that the public voted to pass would not only be the height of hypocritical action, but would be an insult to the intelligence of our citizens. It would clearly state that our freedom and personal responsibility is only valued when it aligns with a partisan policy, not in all aspects of our lives. It would be a move clearly contradictory to the values we have been told our leaders value so highly. I urge you to consider this as you look forward to deciding when and how to implement these measures that our citizens have spoken out for and chosen.

I will leave you with a final quote from our Governor. "Freedom focuses our politics on persuasion and the intellectual strength of our positions, not on control, coercion or the heavy hand of government. And if someone is interested in the common good in

Tesla Solar Tiles; Elon mentioned they are in 25 states...Does anyone have a list of those states? I am from South Dakota and would love to be (potentially) the first!

Hello all, I am a home builder (with one of the largest companies in our small state) and will be building my own home in mid 2020. After the recent announcement of iteration three, I really want to take a solid look at using the solar tiles for my next roof. Even if it ends up a little more expensive, I do believe the future of energy includes a % of people with self sustaining properties, and I want to use my younger years (27) to learn in a hands on way. Any information, advice, calculations, videos and thoughts would be greatly helpful!
