16-17 What to Bring lists - ALL cooking appliances??

Noticed that Housing put out updated packing lists for everyone living in RIT housing recently. Under "What Not to Bring" for Res Halls and the Inn now includes "any appliance intended to be used for cooking".

What's up with that? I thought the rule for years was auto-shutoffs only, and no microwaves, toasters, or open flames. I was getting excited to bring Ol' Rice Cooker, is this policy change going to doom me to takeout and TV dinners again?

If I could only choose one appliance to supplement my cooking, what would it be?

I’m a med student on a budget, but I do have the chance to get one more appliance to cook with. I currently have a stovetop with a pan, a microwave, and a small toaster oven. What other appliance could I get that would give me access to the most recipes? Thanks so much!

LPT: If you’re cooking something in the microwave with sauce that you don’t want to end up splattering all over the inside of your appliance, wet the sides of a paper towel and place over the top of the bowl/container.

This will keep the paper towel from moving during cooking and ensure the top remains covered!

One of the best vegan cooking appliances

Just a note. One of the benefits of being vegan is the extraordinary range of foods one can enjoy. One appliance we've found that helps expand that range is a high-end blender.

We use a Vitamix. The downside is that the high power blenders like Vitamix and Blendtec are painfully expensive for most people. We certainly gritted our teeth when we bought ours.

The value is excellent, however. Our Vitamix still hasn't missed a beat for the over 10 years that we've been using it. We expect to die before the Vitamix does.

At any rate, if you're into exploring the vast range of recipes available in the world of plant-based haute cuisine, a high-powered blender is your friend.

Student cooking with minimal kitchen appliances

Hey y'all, I am a student who moved to a different country very recently and I want to cook some proper food. Unfortunately, there's no kitchen where I stay, but I have a rice cooker/slow cooker, a toaster, an electric water kettle and a microwave. Now I would love to have at least a hot plate, but I am kind of restricted from having one at my place. What would be a good dish to cook with these minimal tools? Please share any recipes if you can. I am tired of eating soggy supermarket pizzas. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Can eating healthy, organic or non-processed food be done without using stove or any sort of cooking appliance? I’m currently away from home for training until mid-August and only have refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker in regards to stuff for consumption.

Way too expensive to be eating out everyday and my parents live about an hour away from where I’m training. We try cooking about a few days to a week worth of food when we go over. I want to refrain from eating so much processed foods since they usually have high-sodium content. What are my options for eating as healthy as I can during these few months? Peanut butter and jelly for life til death do us apart?

Korean BBQ in general and looking for a cooking appliances and just looking for some general tips.

Hey i had this delicious barbeque a long time ago with some distant family at their place in another country where they had this weird Korean BBQish contraption that would let the fats and juices of the meat grill in the middle run down in a noodle broth that was around the korean grill like a moat.

I don't remeber the name of this machine i just remeber it being really delicious,

Other then looking for said machine/cookingstove i would like some general pointers on how best to make korean BBQ, is there any safety concerns, should the meat be as thin as possible and how should i prepare said meat?

I have $2000 to spend for kitchen appliances. What do you recommend I buy that can expand or improve my cooking?

So long story short, I got lucky with a raffle that won me $2000 AUD for kitchen appliances only.

I've already got a powerful food processor, a rice cooker, and a pasta maker. My apartment unit already has the white goods (stove, oven, fridge, dishwasher) so I don't need those.

I've got my eyes on an ice cream maker. But what else would you recommend?

Edit: Forgot to mention I already have Wusthof knife (one chef knife and one peeling knife) and sharpening stones (1000 and 6000 grit)!

Advice on what kind of cooking appliance to get with a gift card?

So for Christmas I've received a large Amazon gift card. About 150$.

I don't really have any fancy cooking appliances so I'm looking to invest in something good. My cooking tools are literally just a cutting board and some nice knives. I've never had any classes or been taught much by family so most of my food knowledge comes from reddit and youtube.

What I like to make: Soups, Pastas, Baked goods (mostly just cookies but I want to learn how to make bread), Roasts (chickens, beef, veg), Breakfast foods.

What I've been looking at: Waffle Iron, Food processor, Standing Mixer (I know this will well exceed my gift card but if it's that good I'd definitely be into the investment), Electronic Scale, Blender.

Can anyone give me advice in what kind of appliances you use and the practicality of them? I'm just very curious about what is in your kitchen and what you use the most often!

Thanks for your help!

And if you have a favorite, please let me know!

My new apartment has no cooking gas! What are appliance and ingredient workarounds you’d recommend?

Hey cooking friends! In a classic β€œfun New York housing story,” we weren’t informed until after move in that there was no cooking gas to our apartment. I was super bummedβ€”I love to cook, and haven’t had my own range in over a year.

All legal and apartment stuff aside, I’ve been stuck trying to figure out how to best approximate a normal working kitchen, and the meals that would come forth from it. So I was wondering if any of you who have been in similar low-tech situations have recommendations for favorite hot plates, the best toaster ovens, and even what frozen meals you swear by. I’m gonna make the most of this, I swear!

Thank you for your help.
