This movie is...holy shit, man.

It's based on the 2009 hijacking of the ship Maersk Alabama, hijacked by 4 Somali pirates, with its captain Richard "Rich" Phillips taken hostage by the ruthless leader Abduwali Muse. The movie depicts this situation, and the Navy attempting to rescue Phillips.

Tom Hanks deliveres probably his greatest performance ever as Phillips, and pirate leader Muse is downright scary, in a BAFTA winning performance from Barkhad Abdi. The movie also utilizes handheld shaky cam in a way actually adds to the gritty and realistic tone. This is probably one of the most R rated PG-13 movies ever!

Also, holy shit is it intense! Especially in the final third act.

Like, man is this a great movie.

Which film, for which he did not receive an Oscar nomination, do you think as most worthy of a nom?

There were a lot of notable performances that weren't nominated (Apollo 13, Bridge of Spies, Captain Phillips, Catch Me If You Can, Charlie Wilson's War, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Green Mile, News of the World, The Post, Road to Perdition, Saving Mr. Banks, Sleepless in Seattle, Sully, The Terminal, You've Got Mail, etc.), so I tried to narrow down the options to the ones that he either received the most precursors for.

Tom Hanks, America's dad, nicest guy in Hollywood, the Jimmy Stewart of modern times, also one of our best and most popular actors for most of my lifetime. Starting out in dumb TV comedies like Bosom Buddies and quickly graduating to dumb feature length comedies like Bachelor Party, it wasn't really until he did Big that people took notice of him as an actor. He scored his first Oscar nomination and 5 short years later won the first of back to back Oscars for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. He's shown that he's adept at simple rom-com lead roles, and he's shown himself quietly ambitious in his choice of projects, choosing things like Cloud Atlas and Joe Versus the Volcano that many others would've passed on. What do you think of Mr Hank Toms, FG?

He's praised for his better known roles like Philadelphia and Forrest Gump but I rarely hear about his role as Jimmy Dugan. Not only is it one of the funniest performances I've ever seen but his character has a nice arc as the movies progresses.

While his performance is mostly comedic he has some great moments of drama during his interactions with the female characters. His chemistry with Geena Davis is also incredible.

Coronavirus has proven to be a great equalizer. For anyone who thought that this would never happen to them, reality checks are coming in the form of more and more cases being diagnosed. Oscar went to Tom Hanks, but I want to see if the general opinion has changed over time. Personally, I liked Sam Jackson's performance the best (even though it wasn't even nominated for the Oscar). I loved how he portrayed the character. He went from a gangster badass to a hero in the end (albeit he was still badass).
