30 Rock = The Mary Tyler Moore Show?

My wife and I are big 30 Rock fans. Yesterday she made an interesting observation: there are a lot of similarities between 30 Rock and The Mary Tyler Moore Show:

  • Liz Lemon = Mary Richards:
    • They are single women in their 30s
    • They both work in live television
    • They live in a different city from where they grew up
    • They are relatively sane but have their funny quirks
  • Jack Donaghy = Lou Grant: gruff but caring boss
  • Tracy Morgan = Ted Baxter: narcissistic attention-seeking co-worker
  • Pete Hornberger = Murray Slaughter: bald domesticated friend whose job drives him nuts
  • Jenna Maroney = Rhoda Morgenstern + Sue Ann Nivens: single and man-crazy
  • Kenneth Parcell = Georgette Frankin-Baxter: innocent and naive yet wise

Also

  • Strong ensemble casts
  • Story lines cover work lives and personal lives
  • Story lines often touch on current affairs and social issues
  • Frequently use guest stars to play love interests for a few episodes

What do others think?

All in the Family, Mary Tyler Moore, M*A*S*H*, Taxi, and Good Times were all loaded with political subtext or outright text throughout the '70s. By the '80s, politics were treated as a joke (Family Ties) or an afterthought (Cosby Show, Cheers) by sitcoms. What triggered this change?

Was this the result of changes in gatekeeping by the networks (obviously, several of these shows that started in the '70s lasted well into the next decade, but replacements were lacking in similar POVs), or a change in taste of audiences?

I posted this pic of Mary Tyler Moore chillin' in the 50's a couple of years ago but I think it fits here nicely.

Looking casual cool, Mary Tyler Moore, Elvis Presley and director William A. Graham on the set of CHANGE OF HABIT (1969). Elvis (in his final dramatic role) plays a doctor who falls in love with a Nun (Moore) working undercover in his inner city clinic, before taking her final vows.

Mary Tyler Moore did the "hot priest" thing in 1975. It turned out a little differently than our girls experience...
