Chapter One: The Bonfire December 17, 2021 | 11:38pm
Arms linked, I clutch Grace’s bicep against my own, fighting for balance as my bare feet sink into the crunchy, cold sand. Giggling, we slowly land on top of one another, our bottles of Casamigos Blanco clinking together. Laughing, we giddily glug down another quick and unmeasured shot. The night is starting to get a little fuzzy, but being back in my hometown with my best friends is just what the doctor ordered.
I peer out at the dark and gloomy winter night, as the ocean waves soothingly crash against the sand. The tide is higher than it was when we got to Sarah Breen’s annual Christmas bonfire party at Half Moon Bay State Beach a few hours ago.
Tonight will be the last bonfire party anyone with even a smidge of dignity from our graduating class will attend. Even Sarah herself will pass down the hosting torch to her little sister, Emily Breen, four years our senior. Emily is in my younger brother Sage’s class at The Aster School, the ultra-wealthy, prestigious K-12 private school we have attended since childhood. Parents across the Bay Area still vy for the highly-sought after Aster kindergarten interview from the day their children take their first step, hiring Harvard-educated tutors and making appointments with world-renowned pediatricians.
My mother being one of them, despite her humble Texas trailer park upbringing. My grandmother, Claudette, has been frugal for most of her life and has been able to pay the tuition for both my brother and I all of these years. Ha, like my parents could ever afford anything like The Aster School on their own. I push my family’s tangled web of secrets out of my mind. I’m not here to focus on all of this tonight. It’s about being with my best friends.
"Come on, Grace! Let’s find the girls,” I say. Grace’s smooth, straight, jet black hair hits her small frame and sculpted pilates body at just the right angle. Korean-American, she is humble, driven and doesn’t realize her own beauty. Grace will be finishing her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Princeton in May. When it comes to my future, I wish I had Grace’s confidence and work ethic. If I am being honest with myself, I have no idea what direction I’m headed in with my Communications degree from UC Santa Barbara, where I’ve admittedly been doing more partying than studying. I scan the crowd for our friends, Alden, Goldie and Matilda Mae, though everyone calls her Tillie.

Who’s the best character or your favorite in your opinion?
I'm not sure how many fans of the show would be gracing such a lovely subreddit (okay, maybe I shouldn't be so presumptuous) but I'm seeing a lot on my FB feed about how disappointed they are with the "A" reveal. They are being cryptic as to not give it away for those who haven't seen it, but I'm never going to watch the show anyway. Why are people so upset?
Any PLL fans out there? I an super bored and came up with list of what PLL characters the DM girls remind me of. I mean no shade to any of the girls- they all have some great qualities!
