Hopefully Belconnen suburbs are in the next round
I'm looking to move somewhere in the northeast, USA. I've lived in cities for the last 15 years... I use transit, I commute by bike, but now I'm looking for a still-walkable place with a small backyard with enough room to set up a grill. Ideally near NYC, but really I'm looking for any Suburbs that Don't Suck. Where can I find a list of these?
We all know the traits: built pre-WWII before cars so has mixed use where a corner store isn't made illegal by SFH zoning. A 15 minute community where you don't need a car to buy groceries (but talking about the US, so yes, realistically gonna have to cross a stroad tho). Residential streets are narrow enough to feel tree-shaded and discourage speeding cars while feeling walkable b/c no minimum lot sizes or setback rules. Maybe there's even a rail station not completely surrounded by a sea of asphalt.
Surely there are places like this that aren't gentrified to utter unaffordability with coffeeshops serving hipster brunches, right? Has anyone compiled a list of towns that check off the NJB values, even if only partially and imperfectly because the USA is not the Netherlands?
Do you know any towns that have a momentum of projects redeveloping into such a community?
I don't have the money or the hipster beard to afford the East Village or Williamsburg, but especially if these are the traits that make a place desirable as measured by the most absurd real estate prices in the country, where can I find reasonable communities to live these values?
There was a post about grocery prices going up. Can we have a list of suburbs with the cheapest stores with categories eg
Dandenong Fruits and vegetables: Dandenong Saturday market Meat:The Australian Butcher shop Other groceries milk bread etc: Marmara groceries
Thomastown/lalor: Fruits and veggies: shop opposite to lalor Coles Meat: Butcher shops next to Lalor Coles Other groceries milk bread: IGA Thomastown
To preempt, all of these points are very basic and simple. They come from my time spent peering through this subreddit as well as from some videos on YouTube, but I have absolutely no formal education. So go easy on me, basically! That said, I still want to know what you guys think.
My partner and I are looking a start a family in the coming years, and are looking to buy a house and settle in a nice part of Canberra.
In this thread, I'm hoping to get discussions going about some of the under-rated suburbs of Canberra that are worth looking at for people in our situation. The ones with good government schools, a sizeable percentage of the population who are also young families.
As much as the Inner North feels like it would have the vibe that we're looking for, our budget is in the mid-to-high $700,000s, which effectively rules out anything in that area. So we're looking further afield, and asking for recommendations.
Are there any suburbs that has a nice self-contained feel, but also has good transport links to Civic? Where are the best local parks or nature reserves? Or any particular parts of suburbs that are worth knowing about.
We're hoping to avoid 'dormatory suburbs' like Lawson, with treeless streets and wall-to-wall houses that have been constructed with little concern for aesthetics.
Finally, just pre-empting the posters who will no doubt point out that "all of Canberra is a 30 minute drive from Civic", and say that it is a good place for recreation in general. Good points, but we're trying to go beyond those generalities, and find the spots that are particularly good.

Maybe a mod can do a nice official ones of these?

We are moving to inner city Canberra for work, but wanting to move to a country town in NSW/ACT with the intention to buy an affordable property, within the next 24 months. I was wondering what your recommendations were for towns/suburbs within a 30 min drive to Campbell.
