Liberation fonts 1.* are gorgeous.

Just wanted to say that. Perfect hinting, aesthetically pleasant, and in general less nausea-inducing than all other fonts I know of.

I mean, they are really better than the MS fonts they are intended to replace.

Liberation fonts 2.*, on the other hand, are horribly ugly.

That's all I wanted to share.

Quick tip on getting nice fonts on Linux. ttf-liberation.

I always wondered why fonts look strange on some websites. Mostly the hinting would be off depending on the font used. Also, the fonts looked very large.

I found out this was due to the ms fonts. I installed them to avoid running into problems with web pages. That is until I tried out the liberation fonts.

If you have ms fonts, remove them. Install ttf-liberation. I think they were created from the Fedora community (correct me if I'm wrong). Nice job guys!

Which fonts do you guys actually install?

I usually do as I go and install missing fonts if I encounter something not rendering. The last one e.g. was for japanese Katakana for the shrug emoji.

That got me thinking though, since fonts are so small and don't influence the system in any other way, why not install something like all-repository-fonts from the AUR and be done with it?

What are you guys doing with fonts? Which fonts do you consider an absolute minimum? Is there a good core-fonts package family?

Why is fedora so attracted to Freedom that new users go to Ubuntu?

So I'm just a noob, excuse me for false assumptions or mistakes. And this is not a hate-post against fedora, I'm genuinely interested in the answer.

If I were to choose a distro for myself or a friend I know, I would definitely go with Ubuntu instead of fedora. Reason being that Fedora seems to concentrate on things that might be interesting to some, but not good for the others.

Until Fedora 35, it was really really hard to install nvidia drivers on fedora. I tried reading the instructions just for fun, and no, I prefer Ubuntu with (additinoal drivers --> choose nvidia proprietary driver). In the fedora wiki they always talk about legal concerns and whatever, but why does canonical make it so easy without any legal concerns? Upon the install they let you install codecs and MS-Fonts (which is a big deal for newbies. Yeah we want to use MS-Fonts right out of the box without having to read all the ethical discussion about it). They also ship Snaps (their version of Flatpak) out of the box to download software such as spotify, without much hassle. Up until Fedora 35, this wasn't the case for fedora.

Now, you might say Fedora 35 solved a lot of problems (especially Snap/Flatpak). Yeah that's right, but until Fedora has a welcome screen to tell users they can install MS-Fonts, Codecs, proprietary drivers and such (because most users have no idea these things even exist), it's still not for normal users.

So I don't get it. Why does Fedora want/wanted to make installing proprietary software so hard? Just give the users an easy option to do it and that's it, basically like Ubuntu or most Ubuntu-based Distros (Linux mint and such)

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Elden Ring’s world and lore are heavily based on alchemy symbolism (specifically the Magnum Opus)

https://preview.redd.it/nggrnif2f7381.png?width=1301&format=png&auto=webp&s=bf9f68388360df24a6315b1dbe7f0f7352ef8a30

To briefly explain what will be an extremely lengthy post, alchemy appears to be a major theme in Elden Ring. Many other games and fantasy works borrow from the rich concepts and symbolism of alchemy and the magnum opus (the Great Work), but the influences in Elden Ring are so pervasive that the inhabitants of the world literally have alchemy references coming out of their asses (i.e., the Gold-Tinged Excrement item). There is a lot to examine, so I’ll cover the major points up front.

  1. The Elden Ring logo can be compared to alchemy-related diagrams of creation/universal connection such as the tree of life, seen in numerous mythologies, and the Ripley Scroll, which illustrate the achievement of the fabled philosophers’ stone.
  2. The player’s journey from lowly Tarnished to golden lord corresponds to alchemy’s magnum opus, where lead is literally or metaphorically turned to gold.
  3. The β€œbloody wolf” identity of the Tarnished mirrors that of alchemy’s β€œgrey wolf” (antimony), a β€œcooperative metal” capable of purifying gold.
  4. Elden Ring’s Godrick and his kingdom Limgrave are symbolically linked to the first stage of the magnum opus, nigredo (darkness, decapitation, lion and serpent images).
  5. Item descriptions point to lore that correlates with other important processes in alchemy, such as dissolution, separation, and the β€œchemical wedding.”
  6. The leaked early concept map >!can be seen as a crucible containing the four classical elements and bearing signs of the seven alchemical operations to complete the magnum opus, as shown in Basil Valentine’s Azoth diagram.!<
  7. Elden Ring’s fingers-and-hands motif can be connected to an alchemical diagram called The Hand of the Philosopher, which itself can be connected to ancient art objects like the Hand of Sabazius and the Egyptian two-finger amulet.

If you are of the opinion that looking too hard for clues ahead of time can spoil your enjoyment later, viewing any of the posted content is not recommended. If you are interested in deep analysis that doesn’t know when to stop, read on. This post will bring in outside resources to compare with publicly available information. No leaks will be discussed or shown, with the exception of the widely circulated early concept art of the full map (which is too interesting to pass up).

Update: I have taken a closer look at Elden Rin

Part one: Not your average Stalker

He felt it in the air, the crows had all twitched and silenced as one staring at the horizon to the heart of the zone.

He didn’t have long he rolled the man over and put the knife to his throat then began franticly padding down his pockets and then upending his backpack.

Seeing the flash drive he grabbed it and was about to start running when he spotted something else amongst the things scattered from the mans pack.

Blood-bags, he scooped them up shoving them into his coat pocket just as the sirens began to wail and the sky began to darken, an emission was on the way and he was too far from the train tunnel to make it in time, so he ran to the only shelter he could, a nearby sewer manhole down into the Rostok sewers lay five minutes run from where he was right now so he slung his pack onto his back and ran.

By the time he was yanking the cover clear the sky was already red and a distant rumble could be heard he looked down and swung his feet onto the ladder before dragging the manhole cover back into place over him until it slotted back into the hole.

He could smell the filth and decay in the air, as well as something else, crawling down the ladder he felt like just curling up and waiting for the emission to pass.

But the bleached bones inside a black and red outfit next to him said this wasn’t a good idea and he could already feel a faint headache telling him there wasn’t enough around him to shield him, he looked to either side and saw a small pipe barely three feet across, he did not like this.

The building pain in his skull overrode his fear and he began crawling every foot further made the pain subside more finally he had crawled enough he ran his hand through his pack until it fell upon something, old thick and metal yanking the large old cooking pot out of his bag, he thrust his head inside it and felt the throbbing subside as the noise built up louder and louder.

He could feel himself sweating inside his armoured suit, waves of both the pain of deep cold and searing heat passed over him his left arm was spasming and he ha

Need counter argument for this article

So, I follow Scott Galloway email newsletter. The last email regarding web3 is interesting. Basically he is quite negative now regarding all the web3/ DAO stuff, and his reasoning is quite sound. As I am a noob in the field, I post the whole newsletter here, so we can discuss what is true and not true in the verse world

Web3 Share Facebook Share Twitter Share LinkedIn I didn’t anticipate how much I’d appreciate a @Jack of fewer trades. Key to progress is class traitors: Generals warning of a military-industrial complex, product managers who narc on mendacious management, and tech leaders who violate the Silicon Valley code of the white guy β€” never criticize each other or your noble missions to save the world. Jack Dorsey has drawn his sword and taken aim at colleagues attempting to centralize control and gain from the promise of decentralization. Specifically, "web3."

What is web3? It’s a hazy/vague term describing a crypto-powered internet, and a font of yogababble. Its promoters would say something akin to:

Web3 is a decentralized version of the internet where platforms and apps are built and owned by users. Unlike web2 (the current web), which is dominated by centralized platforms such as Google, Apple, and Facebook, web3 will use blockchain, crypto, and NFTs to transfer power back to the internet community.

Sounds good. Most of us buy the down-with-Facebook-and-Google narrative. Cut out the middleman, and we all win β€” especially the little guys. The dispersion of theaters, doctors offices, and bank branches to our homes, smart speakers, and phones offers enormous potential to provide elemental services with reduced friction. Smart contracts could, among other things, reduce agency costs and iron systemic biases out of the process. That’s the promise of decentralization. But does the music match the words?

Reality Bites

The advertised decentralization of power out of the hands of a few has, in fact, been a re-centralization of power into the hands of fewer. The top 9% of accounts hold 80% of the $41B market value of NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain. The practice of "whitelisting" keeps the bulk of NFT profits within a tight circle of insiders. Bitcoin is even more centralized: The top 2% of accounts own 95% of the $800 billion supply of Bitcoin, and 0.1% of Bitcoin miners are responsible for half of all mining output. If it were a country, Bitcoin would have the greatest inequality in the world.

This is not the temporary gestalt of a recently

It turns out, subbing episodes is A LOT of work!

Before making this post and reading al of the info below, I thought there wasn't to subbing episodes beyond "simply translating" it, but I was proven wrong. I think a few people here just expect to have subs for content and not think about the hard work done to make them. But many of use could be more informed about the process.

I make archives of IzuSubs release pages to The Wayback Machine, but sometimes it has issues with saving photos. I was backing it up the one for episode 14, and found a comment thread about how difficult it is to sub episodes.

I wonder, how long does it take for you make subs each week? ... what does your day typically look like before you make the subs?

>It takes about 5-6 hours of non-stop work for one episode, only stopping for meals/toilet breaks. Typically I watch the episode RAW as soon as it’s out for my own entertainment, then begin working on the subs immediately after that and not stopping until it’s done.

  • Every Saturday 9PM EST, within about 15 mins after Zenkaiger (or the current Sentai season) finishes airing, is when episode raws are released. I sometimes check throughout Sunday morning to see when IzuSubs releases subs, and they do so around Sundays 2 - 5AM EST. IzuSubs doesn't torrent, instead they're uploaded by an anonymous user, CreamyGoodness.

Wow, it really takes that much work?! What about translating makes it so?

>... there’s a lot of unseen things under the hood to do that viewers tend not to be aware of. That’s why even barebones subtitles like mine take a decent amount of work to create. It’s also why most fansubbers work in groups/teams and assign individual roles, rather than alone.

... So you don’t want to tell us what you do behind the scenes for subbing?

>Alright, I’m expecting you to read the following then:
