Okay, I looked online after watching it and saw that the only posts talking about Les Misérables and Anarchism was about the book it was based off of. I want to share with you guys the symbolism that may have been overlooked if you weren't searching for it. This is in no particular order since I remember it but not which order it happened-
- Red & Black (song) Despite the subtle mention of romance mentioned as a mc questions fighting, the lyrics consist of
Red: the blood of angry men! Black: the dark of ages past! Red: a world about to dawn! Black: the night that ends at last!
Those certain colors bring to mind a certain flag?

I have seen it all, but I don’t pretend to be a front-to-back expert on TBL. There are plenty of flaws in this theory. But I recently watched Les Mis again and realized there are actually a decent number of parallels:
Valjean/Red: is, in many ways, a good man, but ended up a criminal. Made the most of his situation and now has a lot of money and power—and a mysterious past. Took it upon himself to protect a young woman whose mother can no longer do so. Puts her safety above his own.
Cosette/Liz: abandoned by mother. Never knew her father. The “darling” of her social circles that everyone cares for. Repeatedly asks her protector to tell her about his past, but he refuses.
Fantine/Katarina: was put in unfair, life-threatening circumstances mostly out of her control. Is hated by the world—but not by Valjean/Red. Decided she had no choice but to abandon her daughter to try to protect her.
I think you could have some fun thinking of other similarities too (Marius/Tom is in Cosette/Liz’s life because of Valjean/Red), but the above three were the ones that got me thinking.
At this point we don’t know exactly who our “Valjean” is, but if my headcanon were accurate, Red would be someone who felt complete devotion to Liz’s protection originally out of guilt, feeling responsible for Katarina’s death—or, if Kat is alive, he could feel responsible for causing the reason Kat can’t protect Liz. But, like Valjean, he also now loves her which continues that devotion.
I thought there were some interesting similarities and thought I’d share.

Jean Val Romarin was born in the French countryside. There he spent the first 17 years of his life peacefully until his family died in a flash flood. He then moved to New York City to live with his uncle and aunt. Before leaving Jean freed the ant colony he kept in an ant farm. He thought they should be free and at their home.
One day while walking home from school, he finds a discarded aerosol cannister on the ground. He sniffs it and accidently opens it, spraying the gas in his face. After coughing up a storm, Jean spots some ants on the ground and hurries to ensure they aren't affect by the gas he released. He realizes the ants aren't normal ants and appear to be robotic and oddly colored like the French flag. After reminiscing about his old ant farm, the nearby ants form into an ant farm. He feeds them some food and after realizing they are following him, he names them 「Les Misérables」.
Type: Long Range Artificial Non-Humanoid Colony Stand
Appearance: Each unit of 「LES MIS」 appears to be a mechanical ant. The units have red heads, silver bodies, and blue thoraxes. The 16 starting royal units have small crowns on their heads. Any construct made by 「LES MIS」 keeps this red, silver, and blue color scheme. 「LES MIS」 in its humanoid form has a silver body and a pair of red/blue gauntlets and boots on its right and left side respectively.
Ability: 「LES MIS」 has three abilities.
Drink With Me: Any organic matter fed to 「LES MIS」, or that Jean himself eats, can convert into more units of 「LES MIS」. Each unit require 20 mg of organic matter. However, they are seemingly made of a steel-like material. They have proportional strength similar to that of an ant. They can lift up to 1000 times their body weight and can resist pressure up to 5000 times it. They can also move up to 1000 times their body length in a minute, even faster if they form a line and push the unit in front of them.
-Swarming: The units of 「LES MIS」 grow exponentially as long as there is organic matter. The only thing unique about the royal units are the crowns and that they reflect 1/16 of their damage onto Jean. Additionally if Jean is in danger the royal ants can command the horde on their own to protect/save Jean.

Location: Smithsonian Museum
Time: 9 am
Weather: Sunny and Dry
Population: 310 people inside, 35 outside
Awareness: Aware of User, not Stand or ability
Each user has a chance to make one post explaining how they will win, only speaking on their perspective in the fight. They may only use the information present in their made Stands, and nothing more. Editing stands during the battle is not allowed and being caught will get you disqualified.
They may not debate the topic among each other, whether here or somewhere else. Advertising for oneself to win anywhere is also not allowed.
The readers may ask users questions about the battle and their Stands, to which they may reply, but still must answer in their perspective only. It is advised to ask them some deep and difficult questions about the stand, ability or the conditions and how they manage in them.
Note that whatever is said each round must be consistent to the one before and after. A mod will correct the user should they fail to do so.
If there are any serious questions or concerns about the rules and tournament itself as it's going, message a mod personally and not through comments.

I'm writing this in a throbbing dread of the response. Look, I know I'm touching a classic, but I'm 145 pages in and I dare say only 40 were relevant to the story.
We start off with the authors 75 pages long portrait of the bishop and Jesus f-ing christ can you at least skip the excruciatingly immaculate description of his house and for God's sake can you abridge the silverware part? Also, do we have to know every lane, every street, every building that fantine and her lover passed through? Things started picking up when Jean Valjean was introduced and then that ended abruptly and we're back at the fillers.
Am I the only one that feels this way? Does things pick up again from this point? Also, English is not my first language so what do you guys think about it? I'd love to hear you guys' opinion.
TL;DR why the f are fillers a thing in 1862?
So for some background, when I was in my pre-teens I saw Les misérables on stage and loved it. I fell in love with the story I knew, the basic plot of the book. I went on to read a heavily-abridged, 400-page version of the novel that further piqued my interest. I watched so many different adaptations (1934 French version is probably the best that I've seen) that I felt I knew the story by heart.
Now fifteen years later, I decided to read the full text (Fahnestock translation) and I was not disappointed. What a rich story! The digressions only made it that much more powerful, a master stroke in world-building, even if some dragged a bit, I felt that all were essential if not to plot, then to the over-arching themes of text. Victor Hugo has such a way with words. I also own a volume of his poetry, he is a strong poet as well and Les misérables shows this. The general story is well known, though here it is fully enriched, events are given their time to sink in, where the musical might seem rushed. I teared up at the death of our hero Jean Valjean, such a fulfilling life he had even if he'd never admit it himself. What a life-affirming story, but not shy in its share of pessism, it's romanticized realism in a way! The poem at the end was very touching.
I think of what Hugo would say about the world we live in now, full of injustice, ignorance, and misère. I guess some of the progress made in the last century or so would satisfy him, but still it may not be enough. Will it ever be enough? This preface to this book stands out, because if misery continues then this book will only continue to be relevant. Thank you, Victor Hugo, for giving the world this masterpiece.
