Jujutsu Kaisen comes the closest to a true deconstruction in animanga. I know this sounds like some seriously delusional wank for the series. I can hear the replies already: "but what about the Chimera Ant arc in HxH?", "Neon Genesis Evangelion is a deconstruction of the mecha genre". The thing is, NONE of these are true deconstructions, at least not in the formal, academic, philosophical sense. So then what is a deconstruction? Allow me to put my studies as a Film and Media Studies minor to good use.*
Part I: What Even Is a Deconstruction? (skip this if you've read and understand Signature Event Context by Jacques Derrida)
The academically accepted definition for deconstruction comes from a philosopher named Jacques Derrida. Deconstruction is not exactly a term with a specific definition, rather it is a framework for analysis. This is why when you look up the Wikipedia page for deconstruction you get some seriously confusing high-level philosophy stuff. I will try to break this concept down into 3 steps and simplify it as much as I can.
- First and foremost, in order to deconstruct something, you must first construct that thing. Deconstruction starts with the construction of binaries. What is a binary in this context? It is a distinction formed between a pair of terms (or concepts for the purposes of this analysis). These terms are not always opposite to one another, but they are always related in some sense. Examples of common age-old binaries are: Nature vs Nurture, Mind vs Body (which JJK may also deconstruct, but I'm getting ahead of myself here), and Speech vs Writing. However, simply having a binary opposition between two terms and the concepts they represent is NOT enough to have a deconstruction.
- The second event that must occur in order to have a deconstruction is that one of the terms must be assumed to be more preferred or more highly regarded over the other. An example of a binary where one term is preferred is the one between Speech and Writing: Plato's Phaedrus claims that writing is secondary to and lesser than speech because unlike speech, writing is "silent, it cannot speak, answer questions, or come to its own defense". Whether you agree or disagree with Plato's opinion is irrelevant, but the point is that speech has been favored over writing. There is a hierarchy where speech sits atop writing.

An article states that MAPPA had to shell out 2 million dollars for 13 episodes of JJK. Does Jujutsu Kaisen look like it would have a smaller or higher budget or does it seem about right? What are your thoughts?
