A list of puns related to "Irish Crown Jewels"
When the English were looking to expand their borders in the 1100s itβs not surprising that they looked to Ireland as a prime target for invasion. What we would now call Ireland was divided into roughly nine kingdoms each ruled by their own king. While there was a tradition of having a ri Erenn or a High King of Ireland, Ireland was not a politically unified state. The High King was more of an overlord or ceremonial figure who was trusted to organize and lead in times of extreme peril, but otherwise left the independent kingdoms to their own devices.
The last Gaelic High King of Ireland was Ruaidhri Ua Conchobair (1116-1198), King of Connacht who managed to be the first to politically unite Ireland as they attempted to ward off the English. However, his efforts were in vain as the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland continued, culminating in King Henry II of England taking control of the country.
In an attempt to coyly trick the Irish into thinking they were not bowing to an English throne, starting in 1171 the King of England was styled to be called only the Lord of Ireland. However, in 1542 this farce ended and King Henry VIII of England was named the first King of Ireland.
All this is to say that the history of the Irish Crown Jewels was also the history of the English Crown Jewels which technically are safe and on display today in the Tower of London. However, there was another set of gems, traditionally called the Irish Crown Jewels, so what were they?
Their official title was long. Formally called the Jewels Belonging to the Most Illustrious Order of Saint Patrick, the Irish Crown Jewels were composed of only two pieces of jewelry. Assembled and brought to Ireland in 1831, the pieces were created for the Sovereign and Grand Master of the Order of St. Patrick, an order of knighthood equivalent to the English Order of the Garter or Scottish Order of the Thistle.

Hi,
I'm going through some of the podcasts and really enjoying them. Keep up the good work.
Unfortunately, I have some criticisms about the above episode. You spoke about the currency of Ireland; we use the Euro, not the Punt. We did use the Punt up until the introduction of the Euro. It's just the Irish language's word for pound.
I suppose I can see why the presenters found it funny, it rhymes with an interesting word and I guess it means "kick" in North America.
The main problem was after commenting on how it was a strange word for pound, Joe commented, "that's how they do things in the UK".
Ireland aren't in the UK. It's a very sensitive subject over here, the vast majority of Irish listeners (I hope I'm not the only one) would have been extremely aggravated hearing that on that particular podcast.
It's a small issue, but an important one to us on our small island. Seeing as I'd a way to reach out to the podcast makers, I just thought I'd share.
Overall though, I can say, keep up the good work!
Thanks.
On the 6th July 1907, the Irish Crown Jewels were discovered missing from their safe in Dublin Castle. The jewels, which are not linked to monarchy and instead belonged to the Order of Saint Patrick, consisted of a jewelled star and a diamond badge. Five gold encrusted collars belonging to knights of the Order were also stolen.
The Irish Crown Jewels
The Irish Crown Jewels belonged to the Order of Saint Patrick which was established in 1783 by George III during his reign as King of Ireland. The Order was to be the Irish equivalent of the English Order of the Garter or the Scottish Order of the Thistle. The Irish Crown Jewels were worn by the Sovereign at the investiture of new Knights as members of the Order, and by the Grand Master on other formal ceremonial occasions. The jewels were discovered missing four days before a visit by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra during which it was planned to swear in The 2nd Baron Castletown into the Order.
The Crown Jewels consisted of 394 jewels, most of which were taken from the jewellery of Queen Charlotte. The jewelled star was decorated with Brazilian diamonds and featured an emerald shamrock and ruby cross on a blue enamel background. The motto of the Order, 'Quis Separabit MDCCLXXXIII' was engraved in rose diamonds on the back.
The diamond badge featured an emerald shamrock on a ruby cross with a blue enamel circle. The Order's motto was also engraved in rose diamonds on the badge and this was enclosed by a wreath of emerald shamrock's. A crowned harp made from diamonds was placed on top of the badge.
The Theft
Since 1903 the jewels had been stored in a safe in a strong room of the Office of Arms which was located in Bedford Tower at Dublin Castle. The office was under the authority of the Ulster King of Arms, Sir Arthur Vicars, and was responsible for the care of all state insignia. Vicars and his staff held seven keys to the building, while Vicars also held the two keys to the safe containing the Crown Jewels.
The Crown Jewels were discovered missing on the 6th July, 1907 and were last seen on the 11th June when Vicars showed them to a visitor to the office. After the 11th June there were a number of security breaches in the building as both the building and strong room door were left open. The building cleaner also found an intruder in the room on one occasion. Vicars was known to get drunk while on overnight duty and once woke up to find the jewels around his neck. It is unknown if this was

The Jewels were in the care of the Ulster King of Arms while not being worn. In 1903 the Ulster King of Arms office in Dublin Castle was moved from the Bermingham to the Bedford tower and the Jewels were moved to a new safe and were to be stored in a newly built storage room, but the safe didnβt fit through the doors of the new room, so Sir Arthur Vicars the Ulster King of Arms stored them in his office, there was seven keys to his office and two to the new safe.
The Jewels were last worn on the 15th of March 1907 by the 7th Earl of Aberdeen for a State Function marking St Patrickβs Day. They were last seen on the 11th of June when Vicars showed them to Visitors in his Office. They were discovered missing on July 6th, 4 days before King Edward VII was due to arrive in Dublin for his visit to the 1907 Irish Exhibition, where he was due to Invest the 2nd Baron Castletown into the Order, also stolen was the Ceremonial Collars of five Knights of the Order
An investigation was launched immediately by the DMP with help from Detective Chief Inspector John Kane of Scotland Yard, who is alleged to name the culprit in his report which was never published but this was allegedly suppressed by the RIC
Sir Arthur Vicars refused to resign and refused to testify at a ViceRegal Commission into the theft on 10th January 1908 and argued for a Royal Commission which would have the power to subpoena witnesses, Vicars accused his second in command Francis Shackleton ( brother of famous Antarctic Explorer Ernest ) of the theft. Kane told the Commission Francis didnβt steal the Jewels and the Commission Exonerated him. Vicars was compelled to resign as were all his personal staff.
There are four theories of what happened to the Jewels
The Ulster Unionists stoke them to embarrass the Liberal Party Government and stop Home Rule for Ireland and secretly returned them to the Royal family after Irish Independence
Irish Republicans smuggled them to America and sold them to fund their movement
Sir Arthur Vicars mistress got him drunk, stole the Jewels and fled to Paris, the most unlikely as this came from a 1912 tabloid which Vicars sued and won damages for Libel a
From Wikipedia: "The Irish Crown Jewels were the heavily jewelled star and badge regalia of the Sovereign and Grand Master of the Order of St. Patrick. They were stolen from Dublin Castle in 1907 along with the collars of five knights of the Order. The theft was never solved and the jewels never recovered."
"In 1903, the jewels were transferred to a safe, which was to be placed in the newly constructed strongroom in Dublin Castle beside the Ulster King of Arms' office. The new safe was too large for the doorway to the strongroom, and Arthur Vicars, the Ulster King of Arms, instead stored it in his office. Seven latch keys to the door of the Office of Arms were held by Vicars and his staff, and two keys to the safe containing the insignia were both in the custody of Vicars. Vicars was known to regularly get drunk on overnight duty and he once awoke to find the jewels around his neck. It is not known whether or not this was a prank or a practice for the actual theft.
The insignia were last worn by the Lord Lieutenant, Lord Aberdeen, on 15 March 1907, at a function to mark Saint Patrick's Day on 17 March. They were last known to be in the safe on 11 June, when Vicars showed them to a visitor to his office. The jewels were discovered missing on 6 July 1907, four days before the start of a visit to the Irish International Exhibition by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, at which was planned the investiture of Bernard FitzPatrick, 2nd Baron Castletown into the Order. The theft is reported to have angered the King, but the visit went ahead. However, the investiture ceremony was cancelled. Also stolen were the collars of five Knight Members of the Order: four living (the Marquess of Ormonde and Earls of Howth, of Enniskillen, and of Mayo) and one deceased (Richard Boyle, 9th Earl of Cork). These were valued at Β£1,050."
The Irish Crown Jewels would be worth around β¬14 million today.
