A list of puns related to "International Bibliography of Periodical Literature"
About a month ago, /u/FraxAtax posted to /r/dhexchange asking for a magazine called Fifth Estate.
I was curious, did some initial research, and wow was that one obscure. Pretty much nothing anywhere to be found. It's not my sort of politics (let's keep politics out of this sub, please), but I'm not the sort of person who is threatened by such things. In fact, I'd love to have copies of this title myself. I started thinking about it, and I realized that I would love to have titles from all across the political spectrum.
There are some minor technical issues. UDC just doesn't handle this stuff well (I keep saying that alot, don't I?). But there is some numberspace left for us to implement something a little better. At the moment, I have six subcategories.
The first does a rather orthodox left/moderate/right split... geared towards an American perspective. This would still allow for much of the European perspective to filed in the "left" bucket, but I don't feel like insulting anyone either. So if someone calls me out on that, please offer opinions on how to categorize those things with a viewpoint-neutral attitude.
The second set of categories splits it thrice as well, into (classic) liberal/centrist/authoritarian, along a less orthodox political spectrum. I believe that the Fifth Estate might actually belong in the "liberal" bucket, but I'm still a little unsure (having been unable to procure copies, I can't read it to decide for myself). But it certainly seems almost anarchist in nature, rather than purely leftist.
These subcategories are:
329 - Political parties & movement
640 - Leftism
650 - Moderatism
660 - Rightism
670 - Libertarianism & classic liberalism
680 - Centrism
690 - Authoritarianism
And of course, don't forget that in UDC the code "(051)" is for magazine/journals/periodicals. Note, the parentheses are part of the auxillary code too. So within these you could have a "(051) Magazines & periodicals" subfolder if you preferred, to keep magazines separate.
Anyway, I promised a bibliography. (Warning: This will be US-centric, please suggest non-US titles if you know of any.) Here's what I have so far.

I am absolutely struggling to write a decent one. Iβve wrote 4, all of which were Cβs and the last one I just failed. I am struggling the concept of these and canβt afford to fail another. (25% of our grade). The professor wants us to identify main themes, plots, ect and then compare this writing with another piece of text from our class finding similarities and what is not similar. I do as she says but continue to get poor grades. Please help and give me some insight or where I can go to do so.
What can I do to write a good piece? Or what helped you the most to really grasp writing a good piece? I think my main struggle is really understanding how to analyze and compare/contrast two texts.
Thank you for your time.
I am taking a bachelor's class in English Literature and I am curious about the program at other universities and if there are any opinions about the choices. Would you be willing to share yours? Thanks :)
This is what we had to read and analyze this semester for Drama and Prose. Short stories:

Hi librarians! Iβm a faculty member at a two year college. We currently do not subscribe to the MLA database but it would be ideal if we did. Iβm preparing a pitch to my library staff for an MLA subscription for our college and need to know the subscription cost. I could go through the MLA contact page, but if any of you know the ballpark answer, that would save me the rigamarole. Thanks!
I'm currently almost done with my final general english writing courses, but why the heck do we need to learn to do annotated bibliographies and literature reviews? Is this actually helpful in the future for research or is it just better to find your citations/sources and continue your research papers? I just feel like they're kinda useless. (My major is an art related major, has nothing to do with english writing this is just a basic class)
I am currently writing a long paper/thesis on Shakespeare and Censorship, especially in how Shakespearean plays and sonnets are censored both politically and socially, and was wondering if some of you could help me find references to any relevant bibliography (books or essays) on the topic.
The books closest to my thesis that I found are Stage-Wrights by Paul Yachnin, and Censorship&Interpretation by Annabelle Patterson- Unfortunately, both books are pretty old and are very hard to find, and would take much longer than I'd like to be delivered
The Professor who teaches a course of the Masters program i am currently attending, assigned to me to "gather and explain" the bibliography on a specific topic, and . I immediately thought "that's a literature review", so i started the process for a literature review. After browsing for some tips and hints on how to do it more efficiently though, I stumbled across someone answering an other student's (not fellow student, from other university) question about in how much time he can complete a good literature review. The person who answered stated that what he was having to do was probably a bibliography sample, as literature reviews are very heavy assignments that require months to conduct (i was given 3 weeks for my assignment, now i am on end of second week). I am a bit confused now. Isn't gathering and explaining bibliography on a topic a small literature review?

... keep reading on reddit β‘Hereβs what I have for the order:
Blood Meridian: 1849-1850
Outer Dark: ~1899/1900
Child of God: Early to mid 1930βs
The Orchard Keeper: Mid to late 1930βs
The Crossing: Early 1940βs
All the Pretty Horses: Late 1940βs
Cities of the Plain: 1952
Suttree: 1950βs
No Country For Old Men: 1980
The Road: Future
Iβm having a lot of trouble finding rough a estimate for when The Orchard Keeper takes place. I can only find the phrase βbetween the warsβ which I assume means the World Wars. I also once found a very detailed timeline for Suttree but now I canβt find it online. If anyone has it Iβd really appreciate a link to it.
EDIT: Fixed the list based on comments.
EDIT II: Iβm also gonna try to get my hands on The Gardenerβs Son, The Counselor, and The Sunset Limited (though Iβve seen TC and TSL already) so if anyone knows a date or approximate date for those Iβd be happy to add them to the list.
Also, again, would really love to see that Suttree timeline again if anyone else knows what Iβm talking about. It was super thorough. If anyone has it please comment a link or DM me the file.
I'm at the point where I have to choose which subject to get rid of for my degree, and right now the choice is between IR and English Lit. This would be a joint with Philosophy. I don't really know what I want to do yet, so I'm wondering what you guys think the best approach would be? I would enjoy English and Philosophy much more, but I feel like IR might be slightly more employable? I'm at St Andrews so I think (or perhaps hope) any degree should carry some kind of weight.
I've been meeting with the careers guidance people and right now I've narrowed my potential paths down to politics/civil service or academia. I'm taking steps to prepare for both right now. What do you guys think? Would it be easier to go into politics without IR, or academic humanities (likely Philosophy) without English?
Ngl I'm a little all over the place right now so any advice would be appreciated lol
Hello everyone, this year, I want to be more intentional with the literature I consume, so I am choosing to read 4 books each month that focus on these 4 themes: personal growth, financial literacy, international literature, and technology/economics.
Some books I've enjoyed in the past include: The Power of Now, The Night Tiger, majority of Chimamanda Adichie's books, Think and Grow Rich, The Simple Path to Wealth, and Rise of the Robots.
Please suggest me books within these themes that have been of significant value to you.
Hey all! I'm currently having some trouble figuring out how to cite a court case for an Annotated Bibliography project for my English class. The case I'm using is Tyson Timbs vs Indiana. Here is the link: https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/18pdf/17-1091_5536.pdf. Was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction to where I might be able find a generator or a format. In text citation would be nice as well.
Iβm really interested in learning about different horror figures from different parts of the world. If youβve got one thatβs not globally known. I would love to hear it!
