Back in the 60's, my cousin worked on the stage set design crew at the Hollywood Bowl (he would later go on to earn Emmy Awards doing the same for CBS years later). With this job, he had the perks of seeing the likes of The Doors, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones and of course the Beatles during their heyday.
Of the many stories he's told me of his time working at the Hollywood Bowl, two stories stick out in my mind as my favorites. The first being the time Janis Joplin played a gig at the Hollywood Bowl back in September '69.
'Janis Joplin and the Pyrotechnic Explosion in the Reflecting Pool'
Apparently before the gig, Janis had been off her face, having already downed a bottle of Southern Comfort upon other things and many people were worried behind the scenes about putting her on stage in front of 17,000+. But sure enough, she went on and everything seemed to be going just fine, despite the incoherent babbling in between songs. That is until the end of the gig.
For those not familiar with the Hollywood Bowl back in the 60's, set just before the stage was a beautiful reflecting pool that lasted from 1953 till 1972. Janis had been preoccupied with the pool, which had become apparent as she had brought it up a few times during her ramblings in between songs. Janis decided to have a bit of fun, daring her fans to jump in for a swim. Sure enough moments later, many fans began jumping the barrier into the pool, splashing around to the dismay of all the security guards down in the front.
"We have to do something!" one of my cousin's friends in the back exclaimed. This little fiasco had become a bit of a distraction, causing Janis to fall to the floor laughing, causing the gig to be delayed.
"I know just what to do!" excitedly replied my cousin.
Just earlier in the day, he and a few others had set up the wiring to pyrotechnics placed in the reflecting pool that were set to explode during a certain point in the gig. Well since things were getting a bit out of hand and the security were having no luck getting the people out of the pool, my cousin knew just what to do.
He walked right over to the switch, smiled at his buddy in a devious way and announced, "Watch this. This will teach them!" Moments later, a rapturous boom went off.
They and many others behind the scenes ran to the side of the stage to see what had happened. They were met with the visual of intoxicated fans frantically running out of the reflecting pool.
