I read that John Paul Jones retired in France with a pension from the Imperial Russian Navy... But how did he actually collect his pension? It's not like he had direct deposit. More generally, how did people in Revolutionary/circa 1800 times collect salary or pension from "remote" employers?

I wish there was more love for Void Warfare, Imperial Navy, and void ships in general.
I was just thinking how I wish we got a series that focused on a ship captain and his crew where the focus was on void travel and warfare. Sure there is always mention of it but itβs never the focus for more than a chapter or it quickly devolves into regular combat with boarding actions. I love sci-fi stories that have some one leading a ships crew on adventure, like Mass Effect or the Expanse. I want something like that but 40k.
Like I had this idea for a story about this new imperial captain, they get into an engagement where much of the experienced crew gets smoked, so he has to resort to training and working with the space born menial labors as his new crew.

Was it possible to resign from the imperial navy/army?
Hi all, I've got a question - was it possible for individuals to resign from their commission in the imperial navy? Or to retire?
If a pilot/soldier of any rank resigned, were they potentially marked by the ISB as dissidents?
