Why should the number of potential initial conditions for Hubble volumes be finite? (Tegmark Level 1 multiverse)

I was reading about Max Tegmark's multiverse theories, and I find I am not satisfied by the conclusion that he reached with regards to a Level 1 multiverse. For those who are unfamiliar, Tegmark describes a Level 1 multiverse as resulting from a single infinite universe with a roughly homogenous distribution of mater. He argues that in such a universe, every initial condition for each Hubble volume will be realized infinite times. This leads to some astonishing conclusions: there exist infinite Hubble volumes identical to our own, complete with our doppelgรคngers; every thing that could happen has happened in some infinite Hubble volumes.

What I'm struggling with, is the assumption that there are a finite number of initial conditions. To my understanding, this is implicitly assuming that nothing in our universe is continuous, such that spacetime is a discretized lattice, photons can only assume a finite number of discrete wavelengths, etc. If any physical property is continuous, then there would an uncountably infinite number of possible variations of that property, meaning that the number of potential initial conditions of a Hubble volume is also uncountably infinite. Since an infinite universe would only contain countably infinite Hubble volumes, an uncountably infinite number of initial conditions would mean that finding two Hubble volumes with the same initial conditions has probability 0. In fact, any single initial condition has probability of 0, such that the entire infinite universe only explores an infinitesimal subset of potential initial conditions.

So, I'm wondering if anyone has seen this addressed, can explain why he is making this assumption, or provide an insight I'm missing. Do you agree that Tegmark is making this implicit assumption of a fully discrete universe, and if so do you agree with this assumption?

Music for Space Truckers, volume 1. Original Music with custom 17 minute video. I used Hubble Telescope images and mashed up government archive footage for an other-worldly multimedia presentation. A must have for any space and cosmos fan or enthusiast.

**Are you a smart person who likes interesting music?

Do you think deep space exploration is awesome?

Do you like cinematic scores and soundtracks?

Do you have $4 to spend on some very high quality entertainment?

You might be ready to be a Space Trucker!!!**

I have composed an original 17 minute soundtrack for deep space adventure. Originally, it started as a replacement soundtrack for a particular space exploration video game. After gaining some traction there, I developed it into a full multimedia presentation.

The standard release NFT includes the mp4 video, the mp3 audio and the official album cover. Separately, 90 unique animated album covers have also been made and will be going on sale this weekend. The unique covers have all of the unlockable content, plus a limited edition high quality wave file of the audio soundtrack in addition to the 1 of a kind NFT gif (which are amazing looking and play on a perfect loop so you can stare into the melding star images foe the entire audio presentation, if you so choose!)

The high quality GIF also makes a terrific piece of dynamic wall art for your digital frames.

Available Gas-free on the Polygon chain.

Music for Space Truckers.

A music video project: I sampled a bunch of government space propaganda videos from the 60s, mashed it up with some original instrumentals then made a 17 minute visual accompaniment using Hubble telescope images. Available now is the audio and video files. Limited edition animated album covers coming soon. No club or plan. Just art for the sake of art.

Stay tuned for future projects and other records.

ELI5: Can things enter our Hubble volume?

I'm trying to wrap my head around an apparent paradox. I could not find this by searching ELI5 and I apologize if this breaks the rules for hypotheticals.

The Hubble volume is a region in space containing everything we can physically interact with. Objects outside of our Hubble volume are receding away from us faster than the speed of light and are therefore impossible to interact with for us.

Now consider an object A at the very edge of our Hubble Volume. It is receding away from us near the speed of light. Near object A is object B. Object B is at a greater distance from us than A, such that B lies outside of our Hubble volume. According to my understanding of the Hubble volume, we can never interact with Object B under any circumstances.

However, imagine the following complication of this setup: Object B is a spaceship, and it maintains an equal distance to Object A at all times by firing its thrusters very rarely to make up for the distance increased between it and Object A due to the expansion of space.

Now, Object A is inside our Hubble volume. Object B is outside of it, but at a constant distance from Object A.

We now travel to Object A. By the time we reach Object A, where is Object B? Can we reach it? Similarly, could the captain of Object B launch a dropship in advance to Object A to meet us when we arrive?

[Request] What is the relative mass of an object at the edge of the Hubble Volume?

I don't know physics so please forgive me in advance if this is dumb.

Due to inflation of the universe objects recede from us with velocity increasing by distance. That's what the red shift measures. The Hubble Volume is the tiny part of the universe we can observe, the rest hidden due the universe inflating faster that the speed of light at its inception. So objects on the edge of that volume are receding relative to us at the speed of light despite having mass -- and objects beyond view are even faster.

But doesn't Einstein's relativity say objects gain relative mass when their velocity is that different? Is velocity due to inflation different from frame of reference velocity, and if so, what about the red shift?

Any answers are welcome but especially to the question in the title. If that answer is interesting, does a high relative mass of the total galaxies receding at the velocity have implications for how gravity works at a distance, or does distance erase that?

The Hubble Volumes are such that the edge of one shares a point with the edge of the other, if each Volume was an "O" it would look like this "OOOOO".

Here's another example. We know there is a cold spot in the CMB.

Would that cold spot exist in the CMB to all five observers?

Would it exist in the same spot?

Light emitted from the center of the Hubble volume will reach your right hand, but not your left hand. What is the photon doing when it hits the line in between? Does it stay there?

Do I have it correct that there are countless ancient photons standing still in front of me, and they are traveling at c?

Is what we call "the observable universe" the same as a Hubble volume?

As I understand it, since the expansion of the universe is accelerating, there is a point at which objects in space begin to travel away from us faster than the speed of light, thus making the light that those objects emit impossible for us to see since it can never reach us.

A Hubble volume is everything we can see in space from our perspective. A.k.a all the light emitting objects that aren't traveling away from us faster than the speed of light.

So, if my understanding is correct, what is the difference (if any) between a Hubble volume and "the observable universe"?

ELI5: Hubble volume

I am interested in cosmology and astronomy and have been for years but never heard this term until today. Frankly, wikipedia's definition is confusing as hell. It reads:

"a Hubble volume is a spherical region of the Universe surrounding an observer beyond which objects recede from that observer at a rate greater than the speed of light due to the expansion of the Universe."

This definition is pretty confusing to me and I feel like it expects you to already know other concepts.

Verification https://imgur.com/a/wsQB44k

Prices include shipping. All bags have shoulder strap pockets and bottom pocket. All bags have drawcord for a foam back pad. 1" webbing attachment for hip belt. All draw cord is easily replaced.

Pack volume is internal!

Sit pad not included.

As usual prices are negotiable with a good joke.

https://imgur.com/a/AqP7CxM This first pack was something I've been imagining for quite a while. I finally have enough fabric variations to get a gradient I was pleased with. It is 35 liters and weighs 15.5 oz. It has shoulder strap pockets, bottom pocket and replacable shock cord where applicable. It has a 17" back panel. The bottom, back and main pocket area are made of ls21. The sides and roll top are made of ls07. Purple 210 d HDPE pockets.
175$ shipped

https://imgur.com/a/JH6CxdN This pack is all coral vx21. It's a 35 liter backpack that weighs 18.2 oz. It has an extra pocket for your tent stakes. It also has a 17" back panel. Has the usual shoulder strap pockets and bottom pocket. 170$ shipped

https://imgur.com/a/qXfaxnH this bag is constructed out of epl200 ultra. The burgundy accents are "port" vx21. This bag is 34 liters and weighs 14.6 oz. It has a 18.5" back panel. Side pockets are olive 210d HDPE gridstop. The black contrasting with the burgundy really gives this bag some pop! I continued to work on my rolltop/compression angles. I like where this is going. 175$

https://imgur.com/a/qDphbeY this is another custom print on vx07. It's of the Serpens nebula from the Hubble telescope. This one I did a little different and had the roll top connect to some side compression straps, if we can call them that. The pockets are made of black 210d HDPE gridstop and the shock cord is replacable. The bottom of the bag is heavy duty VX42. 32 liters 14.5 oz. 17.5" back panel 160$

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Question (and likely FAQ) about fuel

So it's been noted quite often that the James Webb Space Telescope has enough maneuvering fuel for something between 5 and 10 years. Given the context everyone's familiar with, that begs an obvious question or two.

The context, of course, being the fact that the Hubble lasted many decades, is still going, and is still providing pretty much the best space images, and thus, for better or worse, the public has a certain expectation when it comes to a "space telescope." And if this ultra-brouhaha telescopeโ€”which everyone knows cost $10B after going massively over-budget and being delayed by years and yearsโ€”ends up only lasting a tiny fraction of the Hubble's lifespan, potentially even expending all its fuel before Hubble is retired, people are going to want to know why.

And that's kind of what I want to know as well. There's probably a quick answer to this. Was it:

  • The fuel they did include was already a very large proportion of the mass and volume of the craft and there was simply no reasonable way to give this facet even more priority?

  • The rest of the telescope isn't expected to survive more than 5 to 10 years anyway? (For whatever reason.)

  • The design was made when they reasonably expected to be able to replace the JWST within those 5 to 10 years, and they simply did not have the hindsight (or foresight) of the kind of heel-dragging you get with cost-plus space contracts, and nobody felt it would be a good idea to increase the fuel tank even with this clarity?

My kneejerk anticipation here is that the designers were basically counting on users of the telescope to be deliberately frugal with the fuel, even to the point of hamstringing themselves. And indeed that may happen, dragging the mission out to 15 years or whatever. Now that the public has reconfigured their expectations when it comes to the timeline of space telescopes, there probably won't be any real choice in the matter. I also can't help but suspect that every component on the JWST with the exception of the fuel is perfectly capable of far outlasting those hypothetical 10 years, which in turn makes me really curious about why the capacity was set at a comparatively low estimation.

We found planet 9.

3-January

It never occurred to us to look up. It was there all the time, hiding in plain sight. Its centuries long orbit meant that during our entire search it never ventured more than a few degrees across the sky. There it was, directly north of the sun, itโ€™s orbit inclined 90 degrees to the ecliptic.

I wish we hadnโ€™t. Those of us who have seen it through the Hubble images have all suffered anxiety, nightmares. Itโ€™s hard to explain why but the planet isโ€ฆ evil. It hangs there, loathsome, hateful. A great black sphere of darkness watching over our solar system, spying on us from above.

Weโ€™ve been pressured to release the images. Who can blame them? A whole new planet out there. They donโ€™t understand. Planet 9 should not exist, itโ€™s wrong. I canโ€™t explain it, but I strongly believe the world would be better off not knowing of planet 9.

9-January

Well we finally had to do it. We released the official announcement and the images. As I expected the world has fallen into chaos. In 24 hours since the announcement reactions to planet 9 have beenโ€ฆ extreme.

China immediately broke ranks with the international space community and claimed planet 9 for itself. Theyโ€™ve delivered the ultimatum that any further attempt to even study the planet without their approval will be met by nuclear war.

Russia retaliated by attacking Chinese space installations in Central Asia. The world is at war.

I knew this would happen. Something about that cursed planet affects people on a primal level. Even its nature is frightening.

Planet 9 is black. Not just dark due to its vast distance but actually black. Near as we can tell the entire surface is almost perfectly smooth and completely, utterly black. It reflects and emits so little radiation that we actually suspected it was a black hole at first. Preliminary results indicate a mass of 5 earths but a volume comparable to Saturn. The damn thing is hollow.

Iโ€™ve suggested the name Nyarlathotep, but the warring countries all have their own names for it. China calls it Yang. Russia names it Baba Yaga. The Vatican officially declared it to be Hell itself.

15-Jan

The dreams are getting worse. Every night itโ€™s the same.

I am on the black planet. It is noon, though the sun is so far away it is only a very bright star. The cold is worse than anything I can describe. I can see most the planets from the surface, except the innermost two which are too close to the sun.

Earth is a bluish speck near the white sun. I can see the

For the Stars, My Life - Would you abandon everything to see a galactic humanity?

On a hill crest between forests, the brass telescope sat gleaming under the full moon's light. "H.W.T." was etched in a fine script on the telescope's side. The man whom these initials represented was sitting in a wheelchair nearby, pinching pieces of algae bar into his mouth. He peered into the eyepiece between bites and transported himself across the void to the realms of Sirius, Vega, and Antares.

The brighter stars were like old friends; familiar, comforting, and predictable. But tonight he was seeking new acquaintances among the dim multitude at the edge of unaided sight. He swapped out the 20 times magnification eyepiece for a 40 and trained the telescope on Barnards Star. It seemed point-like compared to the visible discs of Betelguese and Pollux. Focusing made it no larger, only gave it a red hue.

He detached from the instrument and rubbed his eye. What a shame, he thought, that my only friends should be so far away. A coyote echoed his sorrow in the distance.

The damp air caused him to rock the chair in a violent cough. He would have to return indoors soon or risk another fever. Damn this Earth and its crippling illnesses. He began disassembling the telescope. The attachments snuggled between the brass body and folded stand when the door to the clarinet case used to tote them all clamped shut.

The journey home was a short one, for the ground he sat on was its roof. He rolled down the gentle slope and around to the crescent cut which was the underground's only exposed wall. An iron door set between stacked stones crushed any notion of a natural formation. He unfastened the bolt, slipped inside, and twisted around to lock the door behind him. Enemies didn't care how remotely one lived.

Relatives called it the badger burrow, and he couldn't argue. Six small rooms with two meter ceilings were fit to burst with all manner of "irreplaceable" junk. His eyes drifted across the piles now. Outdated star charts, model spaceships, and books, books, books. He grabbed one off the top and pinched apart its molding pages.

The Realms of the Stars: A Children's Guide to Our Universe. How long had he had this? Was he eleven years old? Twelve? His life was starting to blur but the important things still stuck. He turned to page 39 and descended to the beginning sentence of its third paragraph. "There are enough stars in the Milky Way to provide every family on Earth with their own stellar neighborhood." It was his favorite line in the whole book.

Unfortunate

Divined Motives - a human's journey to "heaven"

Author's Note: This is the chronological end of my multiverse.

It was a circle seven meters in diameter, yet took a sun's worth of power to maintain. It was invisible, yet contained an intricacy which made the cumulative complexity of all naturally occuring life seem insignificant. It was a product of humanity; the final product of humanity; the product which all other products were leading to since the dawn of the species.

It was a gateway to heaven.

They were nothing special, an average human among decillions of average humans, all of which were immune to evolution and biologically immortal. But the lottery chose them, for chance was the only fair way, and someone had to be chosen to speak with God.

The human couldn't see the gateway and no stars lay beyond to have their light stretched by its existence, for it had been built at the edge of human space (which is to say, all of space).

They could, however, look back at the second greatest achievement of humanity: The Conglomeration.

A billion galaxies had been dragged over eons and from the farthest corners of the Hubble Volume to create a gravitationally bound superstructure, a bulwark against the expansion of the universe. Every single one of The Conglomeration's sextillion stars, no matter what it had been born as, was now an efficient M Type red dwarf with a lifespan of ten trillion years.

They felt reassured by the sight, not only because of its current majesty but also its future. Plans had been made to extend The Conglomeration's life well into the Degenerate Era by way of total stellar disassembly and the sequestration of black holes.

Surely for this, they thought, God would welcome humanity's visit.

The human passed through the gateway in a pea-shaped, single-seater spaceship.

For all of its history, humanity had been obsessed with the concept of the divine, of a more perfect world beyond their own, often with a creator deity or deities at its head. As humanity ventured out, this world had to move farther away. First it was a city in the sky, then a star system hidden in the galactic core, and, finally, a galaxy beyond the observable universe.

But where am I really?, the human wondered.

A light on the console indicated that the landing gear had been activated. They looked around but the featureless white pervading all horizons could neither confirm nor refute motion. Only an EVA into heaven could settle the matter.

The gas mixture outside was human ideal, yet the hatch's window

Should we create an English word for the 'day after tomorrow'?

Or would that be too forward thinking?

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.

[wts] [myog] Price reduced backpacks! Details inside. Virginia foothill designs

Verification https://imgur.com/a/wsQB44k

Hi folks, I'm trying to get rid of these bags so I can continue buying fabrics and buckles! Let's get these things moved! Make me an offer!

All bags have shoulder strap pockets and a bottom pocket.

155$

https://imgur.com/a/JH6CxdN This pack is all coral vx21. It's a 35 liter backpack that weighs 18.2 oz. It has an extra pocket for your tent stakes. It also has a 17" back panel. Has the usual shoulder strap pockets and bottom pocket. 150$

https://imgur.com/a/qXfaxnH this bag is constructed out of epl200 ultra. 160

https://imgur.com/a/qDphbeY this is another custom print on vx07. 17.5" back panel 150$

Any questions, please ask!

Hi folks! I'm bringing you all some of my creations. I need to feed my habit (making gear) lol

All of the backpacks have pockets on the shoulder straps that will accommodate smart water bottles or phones and snacks. The only pack without a bottom pocket is the uvx40 one and it has a shock cord on the bottom for lashing things. All packs have a way to attach a sit pad. The gossamer gear pad in photos is not included Prices include shipping.

Listed volumes are internal. And bags have webbing for 1" hip belt if ya want.

So here we go

SOLD Uvx40 https://imgur.com/a/PteNWk9 This is a monster of a backpack. Uvx40 really is something else. This bag has olive 210d HDPE pockets with Moroccan blue channels for the shock cord. There is 1" burgundy webbing to attach all sorts of things to the front along with shock cord. There are clips already installed for your poles. Hmm I added some v15 mountains to the shoulder strap. The back panel has an added piece of hexagonal spacer mesh to hold your foam and help with sweat. All of the shock cord is replacable. Cool bag. It's 38 liters 22.25 oz and has a 19" back panel. 175$ added photo of shock cord bottom pocket https://imgur.com/a/1fs0nGn excuse the toes

SOLD1.0 red dcf https://imgur.com/a/LQKujZh this was something I had been wanting to try. It's one solid piece of dcf for the front and sides. The back and bottom are Venom 3.9 fabric from ripstopbytheroll. It's proprietary to them and very tough. The dcf to dcf seams are taped. My goal was to make a bag under 10 oz. This came to 9.5 oz and is 34 liters. It has a 18.5" back panel. Anyone interested in this bag knows the delicate nature of 1.0 dcf. Who's feeling risky (and careful)? The shoulder straps are reinforced with 3/4" grosgrain. https://imgur.com/a/xUOFLzr 165$

SOLDWhite vx07 vx21 https://imgur.com/a/oEKeceH crisp and clean! The main base of this bag is VX21 and the sides are vx07. The side compression shares a cord lock with the back pad attachment. The top side pocket is large enough to hold a cookset. Pockets are Moroccan blue 210d HDPE. All of the cords are easily replaced. 18.5" back panel 34 liters 18.4 oz 170$

This bag tapers in 1.5" at the hips, compared to my normal design. It features 2 front pockets. The 1st one only goes half way down tho. 25 liters 16oz I can't remember the back panel length. Probably 17.5 more of a high and tight bag tho. 175$
