The Headless is some serious BS... maybe the most BS of any From Software boss

Encountered the headless early on, and decided to wait until I had more upgrades and experience. Now that I've reached the midpoint if the game I'm giving it a try, and it's easily the hardest boss I've fought yet (The most recent bosses I've beaten are Snake Eyes, and the Shinobi Elite).

The boss itself is difficult because of delayed swings, and the inability to move quickly due to the magic fog, but the fact that you need to use rare items every time you attempt the fight, and REAPPLY them mid fight is just cruel. I only had 5 divine confetti after grinding them in the dojo at the top of the castle, and now I'm down to 3 after 2 failed attempts. I also noticed a second one while I was in the abandoned dungeon, and I really hate the thought of fighting this thing more than once.

How to use software rendering for OpenGL 3.3+ on headless machine

I'm trying to run my integration tests which involve OpenGL calls on a headless server. I've installed a ton of software packages and the closest I've gotten to something working is

LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 && xvfb-run mvn test

But I still get error output

Shader compilation failed for shader assets/shaders/vertex.glsl: 0:2(10): error: GLSL 3.30 is not supported. Supported versions are: 1.10, 1.20, 1.30, 1.40, 1.00 ES, and 3.00 ES

running LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 && xvfb-run glxinfo | grep -i version gives me the following:

server glx version string: 1.4
client glx version string: 1.4
GLX version: 1.4
    Version: 20.0.8
    Max core profile version: 3.3
    Max compat profile version: 3.1
    Max GLES1 profile version: 1.1
    Max GLES[23] profile version: 3.1
OpenGL core profile version string: 3.3 (Core Profile) Mesa 20.0.8
OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 3.30

OpenGL ES profile shading language version string: OpenGL ES GLSL ES 3.10
    GL_EXT_shader_implicit_conversions, GL_EXT_shader_integer_mix,

Why is my OpenGL version 3.1 when https://mesamatrix.net/ says that llvmpipe (the software renderer) supports OpenGL 4.5?

I'm on a headless Ubuntu 20.04 machine

Has anyone gotten OpenGL 3.3+ running successfully on a headless machine with no GPU?

Headless setup - dummy HDMI adapter or a software solution?

I've just set up a new mini ITX machine running Catalina. All working well, using integrated Intel UHD 630 graphics. Only one problem. My intention is to use the machine headless with Duet Display as a touchscreen interface. However, although Duet works as a second display if there is a monitor connected to the machine's HDMI output, it doesn't work if there is no monitor attached. I just get a black screen on the iPad after Duet has connected. The help page for Duet about using it as the only display suggests that a dummy HDMI dongle might be required for older Macs. Has anyone got any experience doing this? Would a dummy HDMI dongle trick the system into thinking there's a primary display attached and let me use Duet as a "second" display? Or is there something I can reconfigure in OC or maybe even BIOS to allow this to work? Thanks in advance!

I want to run headless most of the time but would sometimes need to use the GUI(specifically for just 1 software)

Excuse the English please.

So i want to make a 24x7 on machine that runs the server part of an application(an ERP software for a small company) that uses server-client method to license/run other devices on the network.

Now,this ERP is only windows supported but people have been able to run it on wine. So i want to install it,configure it and then just keep the server running without the performance penalty of a DE. I'm still not sure of how well it runs with wine so would want to keep the option to just open it and configure other things if anything goes bad.

So in the end, i want the server to boot headless and then, whenever i need, run the GUI(when i connect the HDMI) which would be installed on it but not running all the time. Is it possible? If yes then how, if no then are there any problems with using the lightest possible DE?

I also know that this is a linux subreddit but shall i just use windows for the server? If it helps the software is 'Tally ERP 9'.

Did I got it right? If I want to learn to do stuff like this in php, where can I find the resources that teach me this?

I want to use my Pi and a small monitor to manage (move, copy, and delete) files on a (headless) Mac Mini, without copying them to the Pi. What software/approach should I use?

Specifically, I have a Mac Mini that I have running Plex on my living room TV. It's not exactly headless, but I'd prefer not to have to close the full-screen media center software to manage files directly.

Right now I have to frequently quit Plex and pull up the Finder on the Mac to move or copy files from my downloads folder to my movies and TV shows folders so that Plex can scan and view them.

I've tried pulling the drives up over SFTP but copying files from one folder to another seemed to involve moving the whole file over the network. I don't want to move anything over the network, I just want to remotely tell my Mac Mini to move or copy a file from point A to point B on its drives.

(I've done this successfully by logging into the Mini via SSH and using the cp or mv commands, but I'm looking for a way to do this with a GUI. Preferably a simple fullscreen interface that will look OK on a small 800*600 monitor.)

    A: Sure, look right here!^(‑)
  3. Q: My Pi is behaving strangely/crashing/freezing, giving low voltage warnings, ethernet/wifi stops working, what do I do?
A:. 99.999% of the time it's either a bad SD card or power problems. Use a multimeter to measure the 5V on the GPIO pins while the Pi is busy (such as playing h265/x265 video) and/or get a new SD card. If the voltage is less than 5V your power supply and/or cabling is not adequate. When your Pi is doing lots of work it will draw more power. Even if your power supply claims to provide sufficient amperage, it may be mislabeled or the cable you're using to connect the power supply to the Pi may have too much resistance. Some power supplies require negotiation to use the higher amperage, which the Pi does not do. If you're plugging in USB devices try using a powered USB hub with its own power supply and plug your devices into the hub and plug the hub into the Pi.
  4. Q: Due to the chip shortage I'm having a hard time buying a Raspberry Pi, all the stores say sold out. Where's the secret place to buy one without paying more than MSRP?

Year+ of self-staking

As a pre-genesis staker, I would like to share my experience so far.

The Staking Box

Stress

  • It is super stressful to generate and store keys and seed phrase, to make a deposit, like 20x checking everything with 5x redundancy.
  • But once the validator is activated and ETH starts to flow in, it becomes almost too boring, like it just works and nothing happens for months.
  • There is also less stress regarding ETH/BTC or ETH/USD ratios swings, less temptation to trade (and BTC->ETH conversion to make a pre-genesis deposit turned out to be a pure win for now).

Mistakes

My mistakes were related to SSD. Initially, I bought 1TB Samsung 980 Pro:

  • 1TB is not enough to be calm regarding free disk space.
  • Sometimes (like once in a 3 weeks) the staking machine used to unmount this SSD leading to hanging staking until a hard reboot. And I was wrong ignoring the issue for too long, once it happened during my vacation. The staking machine can and should be stable as a stone.

Both issues resolved when switching to 2TB SATA Samsung SSD, no even a single issue since then and no disk space anxiety.

Also, I bought a powerful and expensive UPS, but after all these hard reboots I'm not sure that it is really needed.

Wins

  • beaconcha.in is a must-have life-saving tool: both the website and the mobile app. Notifications regarding missing attestations and new client versions work perfectly, if it is silent, I'm sure that everything works fine.
  • I am happy that I decided to go with over-powered machine (Ryzen, tons of RAM) instead of RaspberryPi-like solution: no anxiety that after The Merge I will need a new machine due to increased system requirements.
  • Software dev experience really helps: all this Linux distors, SSH, firewall, systemd stuff. So after withdrawals, I'm expecting to consider it not as a passive income, but as a kind of low-effort IT job lol.
  • Start on power on in BIOS and auto-start of eth-related systemd Linux services works fine: total auto-recovery after a power loss. Intentionally, there is no ready for work backup to avoid slashing risks.
  • Using rolling release (Arch-based) Linux distro: it just updates, no major distro version update migration issues that were common on Ubuntu. [controversial: see comments]
  • While it runs in headless mode, an established way to connect it to a monitor (a

How many functions can my old PC fulfill?

Hello everyone!

I recently purchased a new desktop, which means my current desktop will soon be ready to repurpose.

I'm looking for advice on what OS and software to run, given the goals and priorities I've laid out below. I've started doing research, but the guides out there tend lay out a path for a single purpose (e.g., Install Free-NAS for file sharing, Retropie for Emulation, Kodi or Plex for media, Steam for games, etc...), and I haven't found a guide for a multi-purpose server yet.

I'm relatively tech-savy (I work in software and like to tinker, but am not a software engineer), and I'm not opposed to solutions that would require a decent amount of tinkering. I would prefer to avoid spending hours upon hours on StackOverflow though. I'm also not against spending a bit of cash on minor part upgrades, or doing some minor home improvements (cable runs) to make things work.

PC Specs:

  • AMD FX-4100
  • 16 GB DDR3 RAM
  • 2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770
  • 250GB SSD (Samsung 850 EVO)
  • 500GB + 1TB in HDD

House Specs:

  • Two story split-level ranch
  • Mesh Wifi (Netgear Orbi with 3 access points)
  • Amazon Echo / Alexa in every room
  • 4 TVs connected via Roku
  • Ethernet available in most rooms (one of the first things I had done in the house)
  • 30+ Smart Home devices (almost all run on Wifi)
  • Gigabit Internet Connection (Verizon Fios)
  • Wife uses primarily Apple devices (iPhone / iPad)

Desired Functionality (in rough priority order):

  1. Media Server (I use Plex currently but not tied to that, each TV has a Roku)
  2. File Server
  3. Retro Gaming Emulation (Up to GameCube / PS1 era, would like to play on living room TV, willing to run HDMI cable if streaming over Ethernet would cause enough delay to make gaming impossible)
  4. Steam PC Gaming (Not looking to stream over the internet, just play couch-friendly games in-house)
  5. Home Assistant (used to run on Raspberry Pi3+b, gave up after awhile, but would love the option to spin up an instance of HASS.io to get back into it)
  6. Private Discord / Dedicated Game Server (Minecraft, Cockatrice / XMage, old FPS games, that sort of thing)

Other Information / Requirements:

  • Would prefer something relatively low maintenance, but I'm fine with the burden being front-loaded in the set up
  • No concerns around energy usage, plan is for this PC to live always-on and headless in a utility closet after set-up
  • I have familiarity with / am relatively comfortable with the command line for both Windows and

KDE (almost) beats XFCE4's memory footprint

Wow. I didn't expect that. Let's say... I installed KDE on a system that is basically some sort of server; not really a desktop. Don't burn me at the stake yet; read on first.

I use an Intel NUC to run a virtual instrument called Pianoteq. When connecting a MIDI-keyboard or a digital piano to the computer, this instrument can be played. You obviously need to route the sound output to some speakers.

Previously this computer ran Windows because I didn't really want to try Linux when I bought it in 2016. Pianoteq has a native Linux version. It is one of the reasons why I chose it: to be prepared when I'd switch everything over to Linux... someday.

So, now this computer runs Debian Stable...and KDE.

This piece of software obviously has a user interface. Previously, when needing a headless computer that still needed to be used with a user-interface now and again, I installed XFCE4 and a scraping vnc server. So I did that on this system as well... only previously I ran XFCE4 4.12 or older. Now 4.16 is the current version.

I really don't like what they've done with that desktop. At some points it looks like Windows, with the OK / Cancel buttons on the bottom; in other places it looks like a Mac with Cancel / Done at the top. Super-huge title bars; Adwaita-Dark is TOO dark, and all the other themes are gone.

- Login automatically.

- Connect to WIFI

- Run at full speed with the governor at Performance

- Never go to sleep / hibernate / turn off / no power saving whatso-ever

- Still stay connected to the network

- And so on... basically, full speed ahead without stopping until I shut it down.

I also got very tired of looking online for which config file I needed to change now, while configuring this system. I also didn't like the newer XFCE4, which didn't help. (I might have fixed that with a theme, but... yeah.)

So I decided to install KDE and see what this would bring.

I switched to the text console with CTRL+ALT+F2, removed XFCE4* and lightdm, and installed KDE in the same way as I did on my main computer. Switched the theme to dark mode and started configuring the system; basically everything but one or two settings could be done in the Settings dialog by just searching.

The surprise came when I looked at the memory footprint. It is almost as low as XFCE4. Just after starting, XFCE4 shows 395 MB in use. KDE shows 430 MB in use. (In the screenshot below, the usage is higher because Spectacle is open.)

Sanity check: seeking silence

Hi all, was just hoping to get a sanity check on some parts. They're quite pricey and I'm wondering if I've missed a cheaper/better option, or if there's some problem with this setup that I should consider.

Goals

  1. Silence. I am completely sick of how loud my current 1U compute and 2U storage servers are.

  2. Energy efficiency / low heat output. My current servers consume 300-400W and heat up my room quite significantly. I live in Australia, so it gets very hot during summer.

  3. ECC memory for reliable storage.

  4. QuickSync for cheap and efficient PleX transcoding. I know some people disable transcoding and just allow direct play, but this won't work for me since I watch on many different devices, I watch mostly subtitled content, and my internet is often limited when remote playing.

Initially I planned to build a single system around an i7-12700k, but then I discovered that Intel's consumer processors still don't support ECC so that put an end to that. So now I'm looking at an AMD-based storage/compute server, and a cheap Intel machine which will only run PleX. Illustration

Command Line is great but should new Linux users completely shy away from GUI?

Hey guys,

Unsure if this is the right sub but just wanted some discussion perhaps.

I'm somewhat comfortable in command line as I manage a few personal headless Linux servers.

When i setup my own Linux system for daily use (and not as server), and sometimes I'd like a software that has both CLI and graphical properties (if possible, if not maybe purely GUI) but friends around me seem tor really put me down for even considering GUI things as i wouldn't be able to script/automate certain things etc. I get the power of CLI but.. so I'm not combatting that but when I use an OS sometimes I just like..clicking and seeing things graphically.

When I use Linux, is it therefore better to just forego my typical habits and force myself to get used to using terminal for everything or is it OK to prefer having a GUI to do certain things?

Mystery solved: Nvidia Shield TV pro plex client can't play some movies

TL;DR, plex client on new nv shield tv pro refuses to play some MKV format movies, MP4 movies seems fine. It would stuck in buffering, and eventually the plex media server will crash. No such issue detected on other deviced. Solution is posted at the end of the post.

My setup:

Local Plex server: E3-1245V5, 16G ram, no discrete GPU, running headless windows 10 pro, and connected to gigabit ethernet. According to intel, this cpu support quicksync

Have plex lifetime pass if that matters

NV shield tv pro was bought today, brand new, from BestBuy, hooked up to my Hisense 120L5F using a certified HDMI 2.1 cable, and it is also connected via gigabit ethernet.

Audio setup: Bluetooth headphones, ie80s bt, weston w40 gen2 bt, and bose qc35 gen2.

Edit: I don't have a receiver nor sound bars, headphones are connected via bluetooth directly to the NV shield.

All software and firmwares are up to date

Connections are speed tested, no issue there.

Symptoms:

It would not play some of the MKV files, no matter the bitrate, however, some 4k remux (up to 76Mbps bitrate in MKV format) can direct play just fine.

Plex client on NV shield will stuck at the initial movie loading screen, and after about 15-30 seconds the plex media server will crash.

Tons of error codes in the console, most notably: [Transcode] [FFMPEG] - Cannot load nvcuda.dll and [Transcode] [FFMPEG] - Could not dynamically load CUDA, I'm not sure why it need to transcode.

What I've done so far:

  1. I tested the same selection of movies on other devices (iPhone, Android tablet, and my tv's built-in chrome cast), all can direct play without any issue. This lead me to believe, nv shield is causing the problem
  2. Checked online, found a post on reddit. Followed their guide, deleted the codec folder, and it did nothing.
  3. turning off hardware acceleration seems to "fix" the issue, except now it buffers every 5-10 seconds, it's not watchable.
  4. turning off hdr tone mapping did nothing
  5. No subtitles are enabled.
  6. Check update, reinstall, clear cache, restart, etc.. all the usual stuff, no changes whatsoever.
  7. And yes, it is set to playback the original quality.

Solution:

**Turns out, the audio codec was screwing with me the whole time, all I did is change anything that uses TrueHD audio stream to any other available audio stream, and that fixed the issue. Also I believe MKV format has nothing to do with all this, it's just so happens that none of my MP4 files uses TrueHD

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.

Factorio running on a Raspberry pi 4

I searched if someone has tried to run factorio on a raspberry pi, and i didn't find anything. So I embarked on the adventure to try to run factorio with box86 & box64.

First i tried to run factorio with a raspberry pi 3B, with the latest build for x86 linux (factorio 0.14.23). But with only 1GB of ram the game didn't even launch. Now i've tried with a rpi4 with 4GB. I installed the latest 64bit os version of raspbian and box64 and tried again with 0.14.23. Result:

0.14.23 running on a rpi4 with box64

I had to run this with low vram and low effects but even so the fps is low as expected. Then i tried with 1.1 but it has a openGL error and it doesn't even load. (Probably because openGL version is 2.1).So i tried with two version higher (0.16.51). It loads perfectly, i changed graphics to be as low as possible with normal resolution for sprites:

0.16.51 running on a rpi4 with box64

With this version fps are very good but never stable on 60fps (and if you zoom out it goes to 35fps).So, this version is more or less playable searched for a map with a mega base to test how well/bad it works, then i found this website: https://mulark.github.io/test-index.html. I grabbed the test map: "test-000006" and this is the result:

0.16.51 map test-000006 by Mulark

Ups averages on 10.8.After this i tried to solve the issue with factorio 1.1 not opening.

After a bunch of test i put MESA driver to render using software only (enviroment variable LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=true) and with this IT WORKS. But of course using software rendering is Veeeery slow.

1.1 simple map using software rendering

A healthy 9fps. I don't recommend playing like this.If anyone nows if the tehre is a driver that is compatible with openGL 4.0, please tell me how. The only thing i did was running it with software rendering and overriding the version to 4.0 (wich crash the game when you try to open a map).

I tested a headless ser

  2. Q: Does anyone have any ideas for what I can do with my Pi?
  4. Q: The screen is just black or blank or saying no signal, what do I do?
    A: Follow these steps
  5. Q: Which model of Raspberry Pi should I get?
A: Get the Raspberry Pi 4B with 4GB of RAM
