So the other day I had a tinder date come over because the restaurants and bars are closed due to COVID. The moment he came in the vibe was off and he was kinda rude. I thought maybe he was nervous so I tried to have nice conversation. Then my boy Maskwa walked on my foot and I picked him up to snuggle while trying to enjoy the date. Maskwa was staring my date down in silence while showing his teeth. He even had his nose up at him while using his front paws to lift himself closer. My date got uncomfortable and asked me if he bites and why was he staring at him like that. Shortly after I feigned exhaustion and got my date to leave cause I just wasn't enjoying his company. I can't help but feel like my boy was protecting me even though I always thought they would hide if they didn't like someone. Anyone have similar experiences to share?

It seems some terms relating to them also are connected to pigs, do guinea pigs have any connection to pigs at all?

I line their cage with newspaper and have a mat on top but there’s always some newspaper sticking out. After they’ve been fed with fruits or vegetables they always rip up parts of the newspaper and eat it! Is this normal?

As the title indicates, my Guinea pig has a serious tooth root abscess which went unnoticed during an exam with a new vet, and that this missed diagnosis has led to delayed treatment.

I specifically requested his mouth and teeth be examined when I brought him in for an appointment last week (1/12) because he wasn't eating hard foods and had a small bump on his jaw. I asked for this exam on multiple occasions to multiple staff (during appointment scheduling, on paper during intake, during several follow up phone calls, and in person when I picked him up). After “examining” him twice and holding him over night, I was told staff could not see his molars because his cheeks were “full of food”, so they weren't actually checked. He was treated for GI stasis and sent home.

His condition didn't improve, so I took him to another hospital for a second opinion (1/17). The other facility immediately found that he has a severe tooth root abscess, requiring a referral for a skull CT scan and surgery at a different animal hospital. I was told his mouth had a significant amount of pus in it when he was examined, and the veterinarian who examined him emphasized this was an emergency situation. I also found out Guinea pigs don’t actually store food in their cheeks, so what the first vet saw was actually the infection!

I feel this was absurdly negligent, but I have no idea what to do about it. I’ve sent the office an email explaining what happened and received no response. I’d appreciate them updating their protocol for small rodents to include a full dental exam to prevent this in the future; I don’t expect my money back (although it would be great). Does anyone have any thoughts or advice in this case?

Edit: The first vet was an exotic animals vet.

Edit 2: Thanks all for your feedback! I learned dental exams on pigs can be really tricky, and that the stress of these exams can exacerbate GI stasis, which might explain the first vet’s decision. I do want to make sure the first vet knows what happened, but I won’t be mean or blame them for the mistake. Also, my pig is doing pretty well awaiting his surgery, so I’m hopeful it’ll all work out.
