The title pretty much sums it all. I would like you to share an underrated rock musicians in the previous century or early 2000s, before 2010.
I've seen discussion on this sub about rock and rollers passing away before their time, so I thought I'd see if you all could help add to my list of important musicians outside of that realm, and discuss their influence on the years that came after their careers had ended.
Charlie Christian - 25yo (d. 1942) - might be the biggest name who made the most impact before his young death. Not only was he an electric guitar pioneer, but his style also influenced everyone who came after him. Christian died during the musical shift to bebop, and impacted all genres, even transcending time, managing to be a major influence on rock and roll guitarists, such as Chuck Berry.
Hersal Thomas - 19yo (d. 1926) - was the brother of George W. Thomas, who published "The Fives" in 1922, and recorded "The Rocks" in 1923. In 1924, 17-year-old Hersal helped his older brother expand on the composition, adding the boogie woogie, and recorded a piano roll version of "The Fives", which included his variations. Playing the style around Chicago, Hersal was known as a prodigy, and recorded with a young Louis Armstrong. Hersal's version of "The Fives" became a standard in a beyond Chicago, and ultimately served as the source for the next 30 years of music that would eventually become rock and roll.
In terms of age of death, impact before and after death, and the point in history at which they passed, Christian and Thomas are my top two, but there are obviously many others who deserved to be mentioned. Here's a few who I think might fit the criteria:
Clifford Brown 25yo (d. 1956); Robert Johnson 27yo (d. 1938); Bix Beiderbecke 28yo (d. 1931); Hank Williams 29yo (d. 1953); Eddie Lang 30yo (d. 1933); Dick McDonough 33yo (d. 1938); Charlie Parker 34yo (d. 1955); George Gershwin 39yo (d. 1937).
(Yes, Gershwin dying at 39 was still an enormous loss.)

There has been no word yet of the cause of Meat Loaf's death. However, it is suspected to have also been meat loaf.

I'm in the mood for a film that follows a musician (or a band) and talks about the struggle of being an artist, the music industry and the downsides of getting famous.
A film where you can see the main character stepping in to the music world and reaching rock bottom, only to get up again and beat all the odds in a great end scene.
A film that really tried to tell a story and has a great narrative. I'm probably not looking for a documentary about a real artist, but I'm willing to make exceptions because there are outstanding music documentaries.
I don't really care about cliches, because I haven't seen most films and I am looking for a cozy film you can watch with your parents and your girlfriend.
My personal one would be: Drums: Taylor Hawkins - He (in my opinion) has an unmatched style, ability and technique that could blaze through rock genres of all generations with beauty. Truly an underrated drumming master at his craft. Bass: Billy Sheehan - His knowledge of his instrument is insane. He takes advantage of the variety of tones his bass has to offer to create sounds that the most seasoned bassists wouldn’t think of. That paired with his skill makes him an absolute monster. Guitar: Randy Rhoads - Need I say more. Vocals: Axl Rose - His voice pairs with the music around him to bring out musical characteristics at their best. The sheer range and tone his vocals carry are iconic that would fit perfectly with this ensemble of musicians, and would sing every note with god damn style.
This band (in my opinion) would be fucking awesome

Hope everyone is doing well. Recently finished setting up a little jam/recording space (pictured here) at my place in North Raleigh. Just posting to see if anyone else has been looking for folks to get together and jam. Not looking for anything too serious right now, just wanting to drink a few beers and casually play or record some music for fun. I have drums, bass, guitars, mics, midi instruments with Ableton Live and virtual synths. I am pretty flexible on style but don't really play much pop-punk/generic pop rock or metal (except for doom/stoner metal type stuff). hey guys, no formal training but i spent a few years watching/reading every available book and resource i could find on the internet after being a guy who knew how to scream over metal/memorize guitar frets and little else.
to date, i made it through all of the advanced steps of the fancier ear training apps and i can speak really confidently about chords and rhythms for rock/pop. when it comes to jazz or anything outside of the standard stuff i have to spend a little time figuring out the notes in my head when i listen but i am trying my best to improve.
i hit a wall running into a lot of repeat information so now i just want to ask some questions in hopes there is more i can read into specifically. apologize if i ask some potentially dumb questions here.

do chord progressions imply certain melodies that match the mood of it and is there a relationship between the two that i may not know enough about? a producer i work with writes for some radio artists and was talking to me about a top line i was doing for him. he suggested i keep more of the notes playing on the same notes from bar to bar as the ones in the chords. it kind of blew my mind he just knew right there and i was wondering how because i would have to sit down and look at the notes for a bit on an instrument to just hear it. it seems like certain harmonic intervals would have stood out (like if the vocals made a major 6 or something?) sometimes when he’s talking to me about melodies that match the mood of the chords i feel like i shouldn’t speak with much authority on it.

is there like a database of chunks of melodies that constitute “popular themes”? like if i start on the second note of the scale and play 2 2 2 3 2 1 that is a little melody run i hear ALL THE TIME. is there a term for that and if so can i learn more about it? right now 5 5 5 4 3 is a melody is hear a lot too. is there a logic to picking the right chord for a melody outside of what feels right at the time? for instance, sometimes i have 3 different chord progression options and just don’t know what to roll with.

is there a logic to knowing when you have too many conflicting melodic things? sometimes a part feels wrong but adding a lead melody gives a new character so you want it. let’s say there’s a vocal melody and a chord progression too. not too bad. then let’s say you toss in string stabs on accented down beats. so on. obviously you can mix it in a way that works but sometimes i am a little adhd and i tinker too

I am in the midst of my third reread and I'm now very deep into the lore, listening to Not a Cast, attempting to really get where the plot is going and what GRRM is building. What I'm trying to figure out is why, in book 5 of a 7 part series, did GRRM decide to add an extremely consequential character that would cause the story to go a vastly different direction? Why add the Blackfyres and make this a crux of the story - which were only created between the publication of Clash and Storm?
For me, looking at it objectively: it already seemed like there were enough story telling irons in the fire to be covered in a complete seven book series. To add in a potential claimaint to the Iron Throne in book 5 of 7 seems a bit wild to me. I know that GRRM follows his characters whereever they go, but that doesn't mean you have to add a new character like Young Griff and Griff. Has he spoken about this and why do you think that he added them?

I also play violin (classical and teaching myself folk and Celtic), just bought a midi keyboard and can play basic progressions, and can play basic flute. My favorite artists right now are Laufey, Kimbra, Zero 7, Lake Street Dive, Sam Cooke, The Strokes/The Voidz, and Radiohead (OK Computer and Kid A).
