A list of puns related to "Genetic studies on Sri Lankan Tamils"
I've made posts on other platforms regarding this topic and of course I'd like to apologize for making generalizations about Northern and Central India in past posts (I mentioned in an older post that since soldiers hailed from those regions, it's reflective of the culture in those areas, which isn't fair). However, I'd like for those to engage with the content that I present below and ask why has this topic not received much attention:
[LONG POST WARNING] Before I begin this post, I want to preface that I have not created this post in an attempt to shift discussions of the crimes the Sri Lankan State has committed against the Tamil people or the crimes that various Tamil paramilitaries such as LTTE and PLOTE have done. This post is to discuss something I saw on Instagram (there is an Instagram Account called 'history_lka' which provides a rather good presentation of various pains that Sri Lankans have faced and I highly recommend others who have access to Instagram to have a look).
The Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) was part of the Indian Military that had been operating in the largely Northern province of Sri Lanka between 1987 and 1990, with the goal of ending conflict between the Tamil militant groups and the Sri Lankan State. However, the IPKF became engaged in a war with the LTTE, after the LTTE had accused the IPKF of allowing LTTE soldiers to die in Sri Lankan State's custody. This conflict created a bloody history in which the Indian forces had largely committed rapes and mass murders against Tamil civilians.
Before I delve into further details, the heinous crimes that the IPKF had committed had been condemned by Anura Bandaranaike who was the Opposition Leader at the time and even Prime Minister Premadasa had been moved to get the IPKF out of Sri Lanka.
The Jaffna Hospital was a situation in which on Divali, the IPKF had stormed the Jaffna Hospital and began the systematic killing of civilians, doctors and nurses (roughly 60-70 people), who they had suspected to be colluding with the LTTE. To ruthlessly and wantonly kill innocent medical personnel and patients in a hospital is beyond cruel.
The Valvettiturai massacre was considered 'India's Mai Lai' in reference to the horrors that the US had done in Vietnam. Roughly 60 civilians had died and it is one of the many cases where India had largely enacted cruel treatment onto the Tamil people
The Jaffna Hospital massacre was one of the many crimes that this group had committed and

I'm /u/LearnTamil. I was born in Australia but am of Sri Lankan Tamil descent.
When I was growing up my parents only spoke to me in English and I didn't know Tamil. I always regretted that, I felt that by not speaking Tamil I'd lost my connection to Sri Lanka.
I eventually decided to make a solid effort to teach myself Tamil. It was really difficult, there weren't that many resources - let alone resources targeted for English speakers - but I managed to find my way.
Learning Tamil was invaluable to help me learn more about my Sri Lankan heritage. That's something I want to share with others, which is why I've started a YouTube channel to learn Tamil.
I hope you'll find it useful. I'd be keen to get your feedback on my first video: check it out at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dwpL7CVSRU.
Please let me know what you think! Whether it's good or bad, anything I should change, what topics I should cover in future videos, etc.
I've recently been interested in local Tamil music & would greatly appreciate any recommendations for local Tamil musicians of the past and present :)
Thank you all in advance!
Ok some context, I'm Singaporean Tamil. My parents are from here, grand parents prior to that I've got no idea neither my parents do. I have relatives in Singapore, Malaysia and the UK and that's all
So I've always been on the hunt to find out where am I originally from. I had a great opportunity in the recent years due to my job to meet and get closed to some friends from India, and someone mentioned that due to the spelling of my name, my heritage might be from Sri Lanka.
Thus I started to go down the rabbit hole to research quite abit on Sri Lanka and her history ( I am very interested in anthropology, ancient and medieval history)
I understand that the tamils migrated to Sri Lanka during the iron age. While researching, and watching vlogs, I realized the Tamil spoken in Sri Lanka is very different. It is very formal sounding
And I am wondering why is that so
I already know a few. เฎเฎคเฏ for talk, เฎชเฏเฎฏเฎฉเฏ for madman, but what else is there?
Please list AS MANY as you can!!
Hello AskHisorians,
As a Torontonian myself, I've been fascinated with the fact that Tamils in North America exist in almost only Toronto.
From a population of almost zero in 1980, they now make up around 15% of the population in the suburb of Scarborough.
I've spoken to 2nd generation Tamil-Canadians, and each family has a different story, some came through Europe, others worked in the Gulf first and others came direct.
First off, why Toronto? What lead to this being the destination over UK or Australia?
Secondly, in speaking to many Tamils there is a large amount of respect given to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney - does he deserve all this praise?
Thanks!
Looking to meet some Sri Lankan tamils in Van or GVA/FraserValley. Cant seem to find anyone in their 20s/30s here. Where y'all at?!?
What is the ancestry of Sinhalese and Sourashtrians ? How do they compare to Sri Lankan Tamils and Tamil Brahmins ( and other SI Brahmins ) respectively ?
