A list of puns related to "Freesat from Sky"
tl;dr: what's the best way to provide a slight technophobe FreeSat + catch up TV options?
My mum is ditching Sky. She has a old style 'dumb' TV flatscreen in her room and some flavour of smart TV in the living room. I am working on the assumption / hope that the smart TV can handle FreeSat and its apps can do catch-up / on-demand stuff like iPlayer, All4, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video etc.
The TV already has a wee Amazon Fire Stick but it's slow and clunky.
What's the best bet for the TV in her room?
- upgrade to smart TV
- get a dedicated all-in-one box (is there one cheaper than Humax?)
- some combination of smart boxes?
Unfortunately I'm not that familiar with FreeSat and catch up as I don't watch TV or use iPlayer/All4/etc myself nad I can't find lot of recent info on FreeSat. I saw this thread from last year which mentioned Humax, however their latest box seems to be Β£200 from Currys.
Is there a box that will do FreeSat + catchup/on-demand? If not, is there a decent brand of TV that will do those? Pause features would be handy too! I am also more than happy to set up some form of F/OSS set top box software like Kodi, assuming it can also do iPlayer/Netflix/Amazon Prime Video too.
Cheers!
Edit: thanks for all the inputs and advice, they were super helpful! We decided to try a Roku Express in the first instance and me mum was very impressed. Cheers all!
I cancelled my Sky subscription a while ago and kept the Sky Box and Sky Card (regular Sky, not Sky+ or Sky Q) for the improved freesat options. The Sky Box died of old age yesterday, and google tells me that a new Sky Box costs ~Β£90 while a new freesat box costs ~Β£50.
It immediately seems that a new freesat box is a better option, but there are two freesat services in this country: There is freesat, with ~200 channels, and Freesat from Sky, which has 250+ channels, including niche news channels. If I put my still working Sky Card into a new non-Sky freesat box, will I have access to freesat or Freesat from Sky?
Please do not suggest that I do neither, as I want to continue using satellite tv. Furthermore, I apologise if you start getting adverts for Sky products after reading this thread.
I've been on Freesat From Sky for years, but I need to change my Sky box to a Sky HD box now (my new TV doesn't have SCART).
Do I need to pair my viewing card to the new box? If so, how? As I'm not a paying Sky subscriber, so don't have a Sky account.
Sorry, I know nothing about Sky. Does it also have any DLNA capabilities?
For the record it was my father in law's box and he was chucking it out. The card will be his, and I have permission to use it if required
I only have a regular Freeview box in my room. Who has a Freeview HD box?? Also what is Freesat?
Apologies I know this is probably a dumb question.
I suppose my other option would be to buy a TV that has a Freesat/Saorview tuner built in and connect the cable from the satellite dish directly into the TV itself. The audio would then be transferred from the TV to the AV receiver via the ARC HDMI connection right?
Hi all,
Im thinking of taking the plunge I to purchasing an NVIDIA Shield (potentially alongside a homebuilt NAS Plex Server for streaming across multiple devices around the home).
However I can't seem to get a clear view on whether NVIDIA Shield can manage Freesat in the UK - both for watching plus also recording TV.
Is it possible and if so what (Hauppauge?) TV tuner do I need to look at? Do I need to use Plex Server on the Shield for this to work?
Thanks!!
I'm moving into a new build and have to get a dish or aerial put up myself. This obviously means I have a choice of FreeSat or FreeView.
Is FreeSat worth the extra cost to get? I suspect a satellite dish will cost a little more and I'll need to get a FreeSat box (TV has FreeView built in).
Would appreciate if anyone got FreeSat before whether they think it was worth the little extra. I mainly like watching obscure sports on those high number channels.

Claimed: Yeah
Power:
Shadow Arms: 4 arms made of shadows can protrude from Antonioβs back when in areas of darkness like under a tree. Heβs able to produce 2 of them simply with his shadow but the rest require more shadows. With these he is able to defend himself as well as attack. He is also able to use these arms to pick up things easier or even grab incoming attacks. Obviously these arms donβt react at superhuman speeds and move about as fast as a regular limb so nothing out of the ballpark. He is only able to lift things a bit over his weight but anything more is almost a complete struggle for the shadows.
Wings of Darkness: Black wings can sprout out of Antonioβs back allowing him to fly for up to 2 hours and at a speed of 25 mph. If he tries to exceed his limit his wings will cramp up and disappear back into his back causing him to fall very hard if heβs in the air already.
Shadow Strike: By concentrating on the shadows around him Antonio is able to send bolts of shadows at his opponents. He canβt create his own shadows for this power as it requires him to use existing shadows in the area. He can do about 10 shadow bolts before it strains his arms severely as though he pulled a muscle.

Hi, I've been reading quite a bit about iptv/kodi/tvheadend and plex. Initially tried to setup tvheadend with satip to use with plex. Could not fathom how to get the proxy satip server to work at all.... tvheadend was working fine and I got it to work with kodi but I wanted to use on roku so ended up determined to go back to plex.
So....
I noticed plex recognised I had a dvb-s2 tuner. But, it said 'enable unsupported tuner'. This is a dvbsky s952 v3 tuner running on linux mint cinnamon 18.3... I selected the satellite to tune into and selected epg and selected all the channels. Its sort of working. It takes a few seconds to tune into a channel but it gets there. 95% of my recordings are recorded. I have a ryzen 5 build with 8gb ram and 4tb ironwolf (v modest by a lot of peoples standards in terms of storage!). What I did notice though, is there are multiple of the same channel to chose from when selecting the channel base. Like 10 itvs, 10 channel 4's (not sure how many but just to give an idea). Any idea how u know which to select? I think they must all be on slightly different frequency or whatever u call it but it doesnt show the frequency. I thought maybe this info is stored somewhere and I could perhaps manually select the channels to enable in a file where it might indicate the frequency? Any ideas? The settings are all so exhaustive too for transcoding, epg scanning, library scanning etc. I found high def to be quite unreliable and biggest lag to connect to so I gave up and disabled all the hd channels - even though my connection is between 40 and 60mbs (i measured it with phone app) :( also, after some time of running (days), on the server system, I find it seems to hang / become sluggish if I try and use the server pc to the point of being unresponsive apart from the mouse cursor moving around on the screen but..... server still works from client?? I cant really hear any hard drive activity? I thought it might be 'swappiness' issue but upon reading more about this, decided not to touch this setting as I have plenty of ram so it shouldnt be an issue and couldnt hear any disk swapping... anyone had similar experiences? What concerns me is the settings vs the client player. I can obviously set to transcode to a specific quality to make sure play back is alright on the client (roku 3). But not sure what to do with these settings. Something I have noticed, is that if I fast forward through library items and rewind (eg to fast forward through adverts

However, we would have to move the whole living room around to access the aerial socket, so using anything other the satellite connection is out.
This leaves us with FreeSat, but before jumping in, I wanted to see if anyone had any experiences with it?
Is there a large fire east of red deer? Clouds east of the north end and being lit up by bright orange flashes. Anyone else seeing this?
Apart from enigma2 boxes with hrtunerproxy what other dvb s2 tuner boxes will Plex DVR recognize?
My dad has recently bought a freesat box to install to his TV via an existing Sky aerial. The only issue and confusing thing is that the freesat box only has 1 aerial port on it while the sky dish has 2 cables that need to be plugged in. Call me silly and this could be so easy to sort, i just really can't figure this out without having to spend loads of money. Can anyone please help.
