A list of puns related to "Five hindrances"
"As soon, brahman, as he is possessed of mindfulness and clear consciousness, the Tathagata disciplines him further, saying: 'Come you, monk, choose a remote lodging in a forest, at the root of a tree, on a mountain slope, in a glen, a hill cave, a cemetery, a woodland grove, in the open, or on a heap of straw.' On returning from alms-gathering after the meal, the monk sits down crosslegged, holding the back erect, having made mindfulness rise up in front of him. He, getting rid of covetousness for the world, dwells with a mind devoid of covetousness, he cleanses the mind of covetousness. Getting rid of the taint of ill-will, he dwells benevolent in mind; compassionate and merciful towards all creatures and beings, he cleanses the mind of ill-will. Getting rid of sloth and torpor, he dwells without sloth or torpor; perceiving the light, mindful and clearly conscious he cleanses the mind of sloth and torpor. Getting rid of restlessness and worry, he dwells calmly; the mind inward tranquil, he cleanses the mind of restlessness and worry. Getting rid of doubt, he dwells doubt-crossed; unperplexed as to the states that are skilled, he cleanses his mind of doubt.”
The five hindrance obstuct the path to our right concentration or stillness of the mind. So it is good to identify these as we meditate and be mindful when they come to our mind. In Sangarava sutta (SN 46.55) Buddha give 5 beautiful similes to illustrate the mind obstructed by the five hindrances. The mind when covered with the five hinderances is like clear a bowl of water (still mind) with different contaminants or situations.
Sensory desire kāmarāga: - Imagine a bowl of water mixed with lac, turmeric, dark green or crimson dye. If a man with good eyesight were to look at the reflection of his own face in it, he would not know or see it as it really was.
Ill will -vyāpāda - Imagine a bowl of water, heated on a fire, boiling up and bubbling over. If a man with good eyesight were to look at the reflection of his own face in it, he would not know or see it as it really was
Sloth and torpor - thīnamiddhā - Imagine a bowl of water covered over with slimy moss and water-plants. If a man with good eyesight were to look at the reflection of his own face in it, he would not know or see it as it really was
Restlessness and remorse - uddhaccakukkucca - Imagine a bowl of water ruffled by the wind, so that the water trembled, eddied and rippled. If a man with good eyesight were to look at the reflection of his own face in it, he would not know or see it as it really was.
Doubt - vicikicchā - Imagine a bowl of water, agitated, stirred up muddied, put in a dark place. If a man with good eyesight were to look at the reflection of his own face in it, he would not know or see it as it really was. Sangarava sutta (SN 46.55)
I practiced TMI couple of years and was in the Dharma Treasure’s teacher training for a while, but in the end of the last year I started to practice TWIM. Both approaches are calling themselves Samatha-Vipassana, but in addition to many similarities there are also differences. I think I learned a lot about TMI after I switched to TWIM. That’s why I thought others could also benefit from my experiences. This post is about how use Five hindrances as useful tools. In TMI hindrances are translated as (1) Worldly desire, (2) Aversion, (3) Laziness and lethargy, (4) Agitation due to remorse and worry, and (5) Doubt, but there are also many other translations.
I found that I had kind of swiftly bypassed the chapter about hindrances in The Mind Illuminated. There is of course huge emphasis on dullness, but otherwise I learned to think hindrances mainly just as annoying distractions while doing TMI. My opinion at the moment is that TMI guides practitioner, maybe unintentionally, to associate hindrances as “enemies”. This is not said directly, but Second Interlude enables this kind of reading if you are not already equipped with very well-balanced view of your mind before you start to practice this approach. In my experience if you have the attitude where you consider hindrances as enemies, the field of consciousness will be splitted little by little in an unwholesome way: there are good things and bad things, and you just want to get rid of the bad stuff. This might lead to repression and other aversive and unwholesome behavior.
In TWIM there is a strong emphasis on using Five hindrances as tools for learning. Hindrances are seen as a framework you can use to understand better your mind’s functions. For those who don’t know TWIM practice: it has its own version of attention-awareness separation. A huge part of TWIM practice is about what to do after you notice that your focus has moved away from your meditation object (which is in most cases the sensation of metta). In TMI this is the point where you “relax and look for the joy; observe; let it come, let it be, let it go”. In TWIM the procedure you do after you notice your attention is not on your meditation object is called 6R, and there is big emphasis on relaxation of your body and mind. When you are doing the process of 6R you can use some time to see what hindrances are present in thoughts, emotions or other mind activities which took your attention away from your meditation object.
This is how you do it

I'm working my way through the book (at Stage two currently). I also have a lot of time on my hands! So, I made a few study aides for The Mind Illuminated book, to include quizzes on text, specifically on the Introduction, Overview, and Interludes One and Two as well as a log sheet for the Hindrances and Problems. I may use these in a private meditation study group one day. Feedback is appreciated.
I'd like to share them with you all. Unless that is breaking some kind of copyright law, in which case send me a message and I will take it down promptly.

kamacchanda vyapada thina-middha uddhacca-kukkucca vicikicchā
There is an article outlining the strategies for overcoming each of the five hindrances, as taught in the Pali Canon. I think this is a fantastic resource and definitely worth sharing. Credit to /u/Namkha_ for bringing it to my attention.

Anantariyakamma are the five crimes that will, without any level of uncertainty, bar a man from attaining magga and phala.
These are the following:
If you feel you may have ever insulted an Ariya, it may be good to apologize to them in person, if you cannot apologize to them in person, then to apologize in some other way.
King Ajatasattu was an extremely intelligent man, ripe for sotapannamagga, however, he could not attain to magga and phala due to having murdered his father. The Samaññaphala Sutta tells us:
>So King Ajatasattu, delighting and rejoicing in the Blessed One's words, rose from his seat, bowed down to him, and — after circumambulating him — left. Not long after King Ajatasattu had left, the Blessed One addressed the monks: "The king is wounded, monks. The king is incapacitated. Had he not killed his father — that righteous man, that righteous king — the dustless, stainless Dhamma eye would have arisen to him as he sat in this very seat."

This king was a great king; he conquered Vaishali, Kasi and the Kosala, establishing Maghada as the most powerful city state in the Indo-Gangetic plain. He could not take these accomplishments with him after death as he was reborn in the Lohakumbhiya hell.
All of this suffering was caused by the king when he listened to Devadatta to murder his father.
Choose your friends wisely, folks.
In the course of TMI, you gradually overcome the five hindrances.
I wonder how this translates into “real” life. How quickly and how completely does overcoming them in the context of meditation trickle through to everyday life?
Hello all,
I'm interested in learning about the five hindrances in more depth. I'm in search of a good book on them to supplement my practice. I've read Mindfulness by Joseph Goldstein. I'm considering "Unhindered: A Mindful Path Through the Five Hindrances" by Gil Fronsdal. Has anyone read this book? If so, what's your opinion of it? Any other books I should look into?
Thanks!
One of the Five Hindrances to meditation is vicikitsa, which is often translated as "doubt" or "indecision."
Buddhit, would you mind elaborating on this? If the whole point of meditation is to see clearly, then skepticism and weighing of evidence are helpful tools toward this goal. There also is the Kalama Sutra, which encourages free inquiry and testing.
Perhaps the point is that once one has examined the teachings and decided to commit to them, it is distracting to return to a state of indecision.
So the five hindrances are:
Sensual desire Anger Boredom Worry Doubt
Although this tired old subject has been now been talked to death many times over on r/zen, and is no longer interesting, we still get trolls spreading religious misinformation on an almost daily basis.
As such, I’ve decided to collate all the crucial evidence in the “big debate” into one OP to make it easier to give people everything they need to know in one simple link, as opposed to repeating myself all the time.
Thus, welcome. This is a huge and tedious OP, but I think it’s necessary.

INTRODUCTION
Zen has nothing to do with seated mediation. On the contrary, Zen masters warned people against trying to engage in seated meditation for zen purposes.
The reason so many people believe there is a link between zen and meditation, for that “zen” means “meditation” (it doesn’t) is that there are churches out there that have been actively spreading these lies and co-opting the zen name for their own weird nonsense doctrines for the last 1000 years.
Unfortunately for them, despite much being lost and purposefully destroyed, we still have a few records left from the real Zen Masters.
WHAT IS ZEN, THEN, IF NOT MEDITATION?
Zen is the name for an enlightenment school/lineage which was started in China by someone now referred to as Bodhidharma in around AD500. Unlike the various religions, philosophies and cosmologies at the time, Zen was radically different.
Zen is not a religion or a philosophy or certain practices or knowledge. Zen is, in a nutshell, about seeing your true nature. It’s about recognising what “Buddha nature” means. The penny drops, the cat is out of the bag. This is something that occurs in an instant. You see your nature and become a Buddha. This happens when all beliefs, ideas, concepts and practices are seen through as mere fleeting elements of One Mind.
Zen dialogues are all attempts at demonstrations and explorations of the dharma, as it were.
Buddha means “enlightened one”. The zen masters saw their enlightenment as the only true enlightenment, and the exact same one the “O.G” Buddha/Siddarta/Gautama/Sakyamuni experienced under the Bodhi tree. They retained the essence of it in their teaching, but Buddhists misunderstood and made a complex and nonsensical set of religions out of it, deferring to practices and beliefs, morality and the casting of the Buddha as a supernaturally gifted messiah figure.
Zenlightenment isn’t like that though:

"Hello. I am Danik Smytherson." Said a rotund man as he shook James's hand. "I am finally making it here after just missing you at Jadesport." He added as he shook Amina's hand as well. Then he pointed at her eye patch. "I am here to look at your looker." He said with a laugh.
James couldn't tell if he was an elf or a dwarf, or maybe something else. He had features that could fit either category, and he was nearly as wide as he was tall. He also had an accent that reminded James of a few Danish soldiers he'd met while in training, though it wasn't a perfect match. Regardless, Danik's cheery personality and scraggly blonde beard made James feel oddly comfortable.
He was the eye specialist that the doctors at Jadesport had sent for back before the group had left to see the blight. He'd been delayed a little bit by some road difficulties. But if James was honest, he had to admit that he'd forgotten about him. Between his developing relationship with Amina, the confusion that the blight had caused for him, and the developments since then, he'd completely forgotten that they had asked for him.
For obvious reasons Amina hadn't forgotten about him. She was incredibly excited when a servant had found her and James having breakfast in the mess hall. James had had to scramble to match her excitement. But forgetting about the healer had left him feeling a touch insensitive.
Either way, Danik was here now introducing himself. James didn't have to fake being excited that Amina might be able to see soon. He knew she had been feeling down about the hindrance. Kela had her hand on Amina's shoulder as she spoke to the healer.
Danik struck James as being a bit of an oddball. Between his energy and overall jolly nature James thought that he would have made a great pediatrician, or maybe a Mall Santa, or whatever the equivalent of one would be here anyways.
Either way, he liked Danik, and it seemed like Amina did as well.
-------------------------------------
A few hours later, after Danik's carriage had been offloaded and a healing room had been set up with what he needed, James sat outside with Kela. He didn't know why but he was nervous. Kela inevitably

Shoot only when you have to
Save your ammo. Unless you must clear enemies or nests, hold your fire. Firing at everything you see makes it more likely to summon enemy reinforcements. This wastes ammo and HP for no reason.
Play the Objective
If you are running around the map while your team is waiting by the objective waiting for you, then you are wasting HP and Ammo. Always go for objective first, then move on or extract. If you want to get a few extra points, do so after the third objective has been completed but if you run around solo for five minutes without going for the objective, I am not extracting your useless ass when you inevitable die.
On the same note, do read the objective text. If it says "do not shoot", do not shoot it. Same if you must inject trackers; do not awaken those nests by going Wyatt Earp on everything close to it.
Equip suppressors
Sadly more or less mandatory. If you only have a shotgun, use your suppressed sidearm until you can go loud.
Extract your Teammates
You do not want to subject them to the chore of having to run a level solo just to get their operator back, do you? Extract downed operators.
Do not hog resources you do not need:
If you barely fired your gun but still grabs the ammo pack, then you are a hindrance to the team; same if you grab a med pack when an injured teammate needs it. Communicate your needs to your team and make priorities if need be.
Ok, I had childhood trauma and have an 8 on the ACE scale. I was academically gifted and I went on to lead a highly successful life with no awareness of mental health issues. Was very happily married and truly excelled, did a PhD at one of the world’s elite schools, had a fellowship at the Library of Congress, had loads of friends, happy marriage where we lived a very peaceful and rich life together. Absolutely no cross words. We were total soulmates. I was very very stable, extremely socially confident, travelled the world alone, financially secure, no self esteem issues apparent to me. Was very loved by many people and had been successful in whatever I did.
Submitted my PHD and I had a psychotic break. From anxiety at having done something wrong in my PhD. It devastated my life. It was horribly violent, I scratched a hole in my side, would dissociate and come round in the bath tub filed with blood and scratches. Would pace the floor all night for weeks. Tried to starve myself to death. After this phase I began to see my life on a different light.
Before the break it was as though I could only see the positive in my life and about myself and my life. Afterwards I could see so many negatives. I realised my husband’s hoarding was out of control. That he had serious issues with financial control. These things added up to seriously impinge my life for example not giving me space to work in or tools o needed for my work, or paying for transcription services when I was seriously under pressure. I also realised that I had lived with serious triggers all around constantly: Jim always being so late I would be left standing in the cold for 45 mins, being late to every wedding we’ve been too, never taking me out for dinner or to celebrate any of my achievements, having a totally chaotic life were we never planned anything, and having no space for my hobbies or anything for me. As well as physically pushing me away in bed a lot and letting me down when I asked for help with my thesis.
As time went on, the terror from my psychosis didn’t really abate and I became really really full of absolute rage. I began to explore trauma and realised what I had come through to get that far with little encouragement and a lot of hindrance. No celebrations for things like getting scholarships or published as a student in a top level journal whilst I would help my husband depth every tiny thing whenever he wanted me to. I never declined help. I had asked him to read my thesis

First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Since it is almost December 25, I thought it was time to talk about some Christian-themed bad history.
This tweet went semi-viral on Twitter in November, As of this writing it has 1,251 likes and 328 retweets.
To quote the Tweet:
>Christianity is a “religion”that was created by the Roman empire to justify slavery. The rulers used psychological warfare to give their citizens what they wanted, while at the same time making sure they followed the rules. Nothing has changed in the past 2000 years!
Now I see the idea that the Roman Empire created Christianity as some kind of conspiracy pop up now and then on Reddit and other parts of the internet, so I thought that this tweet gave me a good opportunity to explain why this idea is ridiculous:
It just doesn't make sense why Roman officials would take hostile action against Christianity if they wanted it to succeed as part of a conspiracy.
Exhibit A: the Neronian persecution. The consensus among historians of Ancient Rome is that Nero's persecution of Christians is historical^(1). According to the Roman historian and senator Tacitus, Nero had Christians in the city of Rome persecuted as scapegoats for the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD:
>But all human efforts, all the lavish gifts of the emperor, and the propitiations of the gods, did not banish the sinister belief that the conflagration was the result of an order. **Consequently, to get rid of the report, Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus, and a most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judæa, the first source of the evil, but even in Rome, where all things hideous and shameful from every part of the world find their centre and become popular. Accordingly, an arrest was first made of all who pleaded guilty; then, upon their information, an immense multitude was convicted, not so much of the crime of firing the city, as of hatred against mankind. Mockery of every sort was added to their deaths. Covered with the skins of beasts, they were torn by dogs and perished, or were nailed to crosses, or were doomed to the flames and burnt, to serve as a nightly illumination, when daylight had

In the 1990s it supported the Rabbani regime, even against some of its own Shiite Khomeinist allies. From 1996 it supported opposition to the Taliban, including Shiite groups, Rabbani’s Jamiat-i islami and Gen. Dostum’s forces. From 2001 to 2005, the Iranians did not support any violent activities in Afghanistan and mostly tried to cooperate with the Karzai regime. Since 2005, however, this has changed. Initially on a small scale, agencies of the Iranian regime supported the Taliban, mostly with medical aid and small-scale military supplies. The purpose was to facilitate information gathering and communication with selected Taliban commanders.
In 2005–8, according to Taliban and local Afghan sources along the Iranian border, Taliban messengers were sent to Iran several times to meet with radical Iranian elements and discuss the issue of support to anti-government elements. Reportedly, Iran has been providing such elements with limited support including medicine, light arms, logistics, and training in Iran for some groups operating in western Afghanistan. When international actors tried to address this, officials in Tehran denied it and President Karzai supported this position.51
According to Taliban sources in Iran, Iranian support for the Taliban came primarily from the Revolutionary Guards (Pasdaran).52 A Taliban command centre in Mashhad was established in 2007 to command operations in western Afghanistan.53 Agha Jan Mohtasim was one of the chief negotiators of the extent of the support each year, before falling in disgrace in 2010 on allegations of unauthorised contacts with the Kabul authorities. Before the Syrian crisis began in 2012, the main Iranian objective was to avoid the use of Afghanistan as a base for operations against Iran. The Iranians wanted a complete Western withdrawal from Afghanistan, with no training mission left behind. They did not indulge the rumours that the Americans might leave Afghanistan in 2014, in the absence of an agreement over a strategic treaty with Kabul.
Iranian support for Taliban groups gradually and slowly increased from 2006–11. In this period most Taliban members had only occasional contact with Iran, including Mullah Qayum Zakir, who was receiving substantial Iranian aid for his fighting units in Helmand, particularly the K

Key Points
+ Ethereum has soared more than 30,000% in the past five years.
+ It has more functionality than Bitcoin, giving it an advantage in potential use cases.
+ Changes in the way transactions are processed should increase its speed and scale.
Forget about high-flying tech stocks. Ethereum (ETH), the world's second-most-valuable cryptocurrency behind Bitcoin (BTC), has skyrocketed by almost 30,000% over the past five years. This means that a $1,000 investment in Ethereum made on January 2017 would be worth about $300,000 today.
So, is it too late to buy? Would you just be chasing returns at this point? I don't think so. Even after the huge price gain, buying Ethereum in 2022 could still be a lucrative investment.
Here are three reasons why.
Surging developer activity
Ethereum is a base layer programmable blockchain that enables the use of smart contracts, or self-executing software. In this, its blockchain differs from that of Bitcoin, which is simply a decentralized payments network that doesn't have much functionality.
It can be helpful to view Ethereum as a gigantic, worldwide computer that is open for all to see and tinker with. That openness has invited a ton of developer activity. According to a report from venture firm Electric Capital, Ethereum at this point has more than 4,000 monthly active developers working on it, significantly more than than in did in 2020. This is a huge advantage when it comes to propelling the technology forward.
The fact that some of the sector's best and brightest are working on Ethereum projects is a bullish argument for the Ether token's value. That activity generates a network effect, where attracting more developers leads to more innovation and better projects, which leads to greater utility and, ultimately, a higher Ethereum market cap.
The growth of decentralized applications
The aforementioned developers are building extremely interesting decentralized applications (dApps) on top of the Ethereum blockchain. There are 2,900 dApps now operating on the network, with use cases ranging from gaming and social media to finance and security.
Decentralized finance applications like Aave and Compound allow users to lend and borrow crypto without the need for intermediaries. Another trend is the burgeoning popularity of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), blockchain-based certificates that represent ownership of a digital or real-world asset. OpenSea is the leading peer-to-peer marketplace for NFTs.
