Plex buffering! unRAID Server > Gigabit Ethernet > nVidia Shield TV - Buffering occurs during "complex" (high bitrate?) sections of movies and shield complains of connection not being fast enough. Help.

What can I try to fix this annoying issue?

Ethernet fast but wifi unusably slow

I have Comcast internet and a linksys router. My Ethernet is fast, but my wifi is literally unusable. Currently getting about .6 down and .07 up. Can barely load a google search in under a minute. This is normal and common for me. I’m lucky to get 5mbps up and even standing next to the router it’s still slow. I’m about to blow a fucking gasket here. I use my neighbor’s wife most of the time because it’s better than what my own piece of this router puts out. I powercycled the router and modem and moved it closer and it didn’t fix anything.

Do you guys have any advice? Do I need to get a new router? I’m about ready to take an axe to this fucking thing

Slow ethernet connection but fast wifi?

Long story short, my wifi kept cutting out so I routed an ethernet cable outside my house, along the wall and to the router downstairs. It's an outdoor, sheilded Cat7 cable crimped to RJ45 outlets on both ends and was working flawlessly at 250mbps. Until one day it stopped working at all. I opened up the RJ45 outlet, and it had snapped (due to tension of looped cable I guess) so i bought a new one and recrimped the wires. Now, I'm getting an ethernet connection again, but it's capped at 90mbps when it should be 250mbps like it was before the incident. My ping is fine at 2ms and my upload is normal at 45mbps. It's just the download that is capped. I recrimped, checked the cables at the router end and pc en; everything. What could be wrong? Wifi is getting the full 250mbps as well.

When I'm on Fast Ethernet, YouTube Keeps Automatically Setting the Video Quality to 480p

So, I use a MacBook Pro on the latest software, which, as of now, is macOS Monterey 12.1, and Safari v. 15.2, and I have very good ethernet speeds. This usually happens on ethernet, and I don't recall it happening on wi-fi. My ethernet speeds are:

  • Latency - 12 ms
  • Down - 93.6
  • Up - 94

Every YouTube video that I go to, I always have to change the quality manually back to 1080p, 4K, etc. I was meaning to ask if there is any way to solve this issue! Thanks!

Ethernet speed fast, but WiFi speed slow?

I just upgraded my ISP connection to a gigabit as I was having issues with video conference calls at work. I originally had the Eero Pros (2nd Gen), and they seemed to top out at 550Mbps, so I went ahead and upgraded to Eero 6 Pros (3-pack) in my house so I could take advantage of the speed everywhere.

I've replaced the older Eeros with the new ones. If I plug in via ethernet to the non-gateway Eeros, I get 1Gps speeds on my Macbook Pro or Mac Mini. However, the fastest speeds I can get connecting to those same Eeros via WiFi is around 300-400Mbps, with the average being around 150Mbps. These devices are sitting within a three feet of the router that gets 1Gbps via Ethernet, and I can see in the app that they are connected to the one I'm testing.

Also, with my iPhone, iPads, Fire Tablets, or other Windows Laptops, I can only get above 400 Mpbs if I connect to the gateway Eero and stand within 10 feet. Then I can get 600-750 Mbps, but I can't get that from any of the other Eeros 6 Pros unless I'm connected via Ethernet. Most often I'm seeing 150-250Mps max.

I guess my big question is if this is normal? Does the system only give out a subset of bandwidth to each device? No other devices were using any significant bandwidth, and I do see the throughput on Ethernet so it looks like the Eeros have a good connect with each other and the gateway. Why don't the wifi devices get anywhere close to the ethernet speed?

Slow apt but fast ethernet

Recently I'm struggling with a problem on 3 servers running Ubuntu 18.4 and Ubuntu 20.4, apt update, upgrade and install command takes an eternity to finish with downloading speeds ranging from 2B/s to 70kB/s. At first I thought it was an issue with the network itself, but any other download goes for about 5MB/s...

I searched the web and found nothing relevant, in the majority of cases people just recommend using apt-fast for slow Ethernet connections, but that's not my case.

4K content, network too slow? Ethernet connection + fast server?

Hi,

I just upgraded my TV to a 4K TV, and tried streaming some 4K content from my server. But it buffers, and I get an error that the connection is not fast enough?

The client device is a Chromecast with Google TV, connected with a USB->Ethernet hub. Ethernet connection to the same network the server is at, which is also ethernet connected. The Chromecast with Google TV has a limit on about 130 Mbit download speed when I tested it. The network is a gigabit network.

The server is a Core i5 4670k with 24GB RAM that runs Debian. Plex Server is running via Docker, running the latest official version.

There should be no issues with either the server performance or the network performance. What could be the issue?

I notice no problems streaming content with Netflix for example.

Thank you!

Slow Internet from within Mac OS Big Sur VM, but fast Ethernet connection to other host in same local network

Hi,

following [Nick's blog post](https://www.nicksherlock.com/2020/06/installing-macos-big-sur-on-proxmox/) to successfully set up a Big Sur VM, I experience a very slow Internet connection.

I tested network speed between my Mac Book Pro and the Big Sur VM with iperf3:

iperf Done.

1 GB/10s is roughly 1Gigabit I would say. It seems general networking looks fine.

Starting the download of Docker.dmg (576MB) takes several hours from within the VM, but finished under 5 or 10 minutes from the other computer over the same internet connection.

I use the VMware vmxnet3 network device for the VM. I tried the Intel E1000, but this did not work at all.

Do you have any suggestion where to start to dig what's going on here, except doing a tcpdump?

Edit: formatting.
