I am working a bit with total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy and want to plot how the penetration depth varies with the illumination incident angle. It seems like it used to be a nice java applet for this here, which no longer works.

I am using the formula specified on that webpage and plotting it in matlab by varying theta:

The problem is that the plot looks bananas. Probably due to the fact that I get imaginary numbers from this equation.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

As it partly melted, it released water, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and complex organic compounds. It was the organic compounds that most concerned Lou County. This was not the usual earth-born precipitation. This snow came from outer space.

While we often call comets snowballs, and it may be true that the object’s chemical composition was similar to a comet’s, the object was more like an actual snowball. One with some . . . modifications. Cue the theories about an extraterrestrial civilization beginning an interplanetary snowball fight with us. This object might’ve had designed outer layers that protected most of its snow from being melted on entry. It didn’t burn up and break apart like a comet should.

Snow drifted down on Lou County when it opened up. The object might’ve stopped before opening, which could explain why the snowfall lasted as long as it did. Probably never gonna get a chance to actually do anything with these, so I figured I would post them here on the off chance anyone's interested. Keep in mind a decent handful of these aren't super original, and a few are pretty much directly ripped off from other things.

Lerna - Ability allows him to transform his hands into tentacles that can extend up to 30ft in length each, and are strong enough to whip through concrete. At will he can make the tips of each tentacle glow a bright blue color, which causes them to leave a thin force-field line in their wake. They fade, however, after 5 seconds. He can also wrap the tentacles into any wound to patch it up fairly quickly, shedding material from the tentacle which transforms into the injured sections of his body, leaving him able to heal himself so long as he isn't dead or unconscious.

Banneret - Tinker ability centers around the creation of modern facsimiles of medieval weaponry and armor, and possesses a secondary ability that allows him to force a single person to only be capable of focusing their aggression on him. The effect breaks if someone other than him attacks the person he's singling out.

Shuttle - Ability allows her to lay down a glowing purple path on flat surfaces that massively increases the speed of anything that touches it.

Miss Direction - Ability allows any attack (manton effect permitting) that she is conscious of that comes within 5 inches of hitting her to instead teleport to a location of her choosing, with a new direction of her choosing. Also flies.

Fortress - Ability allows him to manipulate the internal structure of a building. When he activates his power the internal layout of a building will slowly shift into a dungeon of his making, with the exact layout and traps within of his choosing. The building will return to normal upon him exiting.

Arborize - Ability allows him to cover his body in bark that reduces damage. Any spot currently covered in bark is capable of sprouting branches that can twist and grow as he desires. Branches can have, or not have leaves as he sees fit. He can feel through the branches, and having them destroyed hurts about as much as stubbing a toe.

Curiosity - Tinker specialty that revolves entirely around the building, and modification of a cat shaped robot that she can remotely control from anywhere in the city. At present the robot possesses night vision, heat vision, electromagnetic vision, can run up to 30mph, and has claws that can cause a
