Best known online for her brazenly sexual lyrics and boundary-pushing music videos, CupcakKe is a transgressor of societal norms par excellence - but look beyond the lascivious nature of her more salacious songs and you’ll find a talented and original M.C. with a dozen flows up her sleeve, a lyricist of impressive wit and master of one-liners, a voice for the disenfranchised and abused; but above all - CupcakKe is a courageous, self-made artist who has steadfastly refused to change herself, her image, her music, her independence and her close relationship with her fanbase, despite her continued success as a rapper.
Born in Chicago, Illinois in 1997 to a single mother, Elizabeth Eden Harris spent much of her childhood in homeless shelters. Spirituality was an important part of young Elizabeth’s upbringing, with writing poetry to present during service at her church being her first major creative outlet as a ten-year-old. At thirteen, a member of her congregation suggested that she could “turn her rapping into poetry”, and from them on she never looked back as she discovered her calling as a rapper. Though she was the only one in her small family with musical ambitions, hip hop was an omnipresent presence in her life as her mother would often play the music of rappers like Lil’ Kim, 50 Cent and Kanye West in the house; Elizabeth also attended the same school as future Chicago hometown heroes such as Chief Keef and Lil Reese. Elizabeth would soon delve deeply into songwriting, releasing her first music video to the YouTube platform in 2012 at only fifteen years of age.
