This came up on a post about someone exploding a house using a microwave on a timer. This wikipedia article highlighted the orthodox views wiki.
If you can't heat your house how would people survive in northern climates?

Everyone knows you can't drive on shabbat, but what about getting a cab for instance? Or a bus
Hi Reddit! Iβm Rachel Myers, the director behind the new documentary short, βWendyβs Shabbat,β which will be making its NY premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday April 21st. Iβm here to answer all of your questions about the documentary and the art of directing and filmmaking.
βWendyβs Shabbatβ tells the story of Roberta Mahler, 88, who seeks community after losing her husband of 60 years. She finds it with a group of local Jewish senior citizens who celebrate the Sabbath at their local Wendyβs. Every Friday, just before dusk, these senior retirees congregate at the fast food restaurant to usher in the Sabbath (Shabbat) with blessings and candles over burgers and fries. This is a story of rediscovering the joys of community and connection in older age, and in the longing for ritual, however unorthodox it may appear. VIEW THE TRAILER HERE.

Hello!
I need to print a plane ticket for early Sunday morning but have no access to a printer. Anyone have any recommendations on where I could access one tomorrow?
Iβm staying in Florentine if it makes any difference.
Thanks
Iβm a female. Can someone tell me what most other people wear on Shabbat? The packing list says I need a nice outfit but idk how nice is nice
In a world where people had superpowers, could you use them on Shabbat? Superpowers could be flight, super strength teleportation, heat vision, ability to stretch, freezing, telepathy. Halachically what do you guys think?
With all the division and debate that engulfs our community, I wanted to share something lighter: a recent experience I had that reminded me of the importance of the Jewish community's responsibility to one another and our shared history.
About two weeks ago, I visited Adas Israel, a conservative congregation in Washington, D.C. on Shabbat morning to celebrate a baby naming for a close friend's newborn daughter. Rather than have the relatively modest crowd spread throughout their massive main sanctuary, Adas held services in a more intimate beit midrash. The beit midrash was a small library-like space with books in all directions and Jewish artifacts encased in the glass walls. A study room, prayer space, and museum all rolled into one. By the start of the torah service, the beit midrash was filled to capacity with individuals of all ages, from young children (including my friend's 7-week old infant) to seniors who needed assistance to stand or move throughout the room. It was also not lost on me that the crowd likely also included more than one political powerbroker. After all, many D.C. elites are members at there, including to my understanding at least two Supreme Court Justices.
Throughout Shacharit, the Rabbi, Aaron Alexander, kept challenging each of us to think about Shabbat morning prayer as a holy task, but also did his best to put ancient words into a modern, digestible context. He was a delight to listen to and made me think differently about words I have uttered and sung probably hundreds of times. He's nothing less than a star and Adas is lucky to have him.
Now, about that "beautiful moment" I promised. Though I spent many years in DC, I have never before been to this shul. I had no clue what to expect. Yet, as the clergy and selected members of the audience removed the torah scroll from the relatively modest ark, out came from the crowd (which, until this point, involved very few people singing aloud), a loud, overwhelming rendition of Av Harachamim the likes of which you normally hear in a crowded shul on Yom Kippur morning. The best part: the tune chosen by the capable chazzan was the same tune I've heard in pretty much every other shul anywhere in the world. I lost it. I started tearing up. Overcome with the emotion of the moment.
Why? Because, in that moment, looking around the room at people of all ages and backgrounds singing words written hundreds (if not thousands) of years ago, I thought about the fact that Jews all over world we

Also, we have our menu mostly set, but if you have ideas for a salad or a barley dish, lemme know.
If reading is allowed would doing it for class be considered work? Could I still do it?

Itβs well known that teenagersβ moods go through drastic changes. For the first time, researchers report on the points during teen development when depressive symptoms increase most rapidly. For females this occurred at 13.7 years old, while for males it was much later, at 16.4 years old (n=9,301).
