Has anyone participated/completed in this program from the University of Iowa? I have heard there is great funding available for this, but I am wondering how well the program is set up, and if anyone would recommend it.
Iβm 26 and new to IH/OH about 1.5 years of experience. Iβve been considering joining the Air Force recently and am wondering if anyone knows how much different it is than Civilian IH work
Hello,
So I have been offered a position for a consulting company as an entry level industrial hygienist. I do not have much experience in specific IH however I do have other similar experiences that are applicable. I have an MPH in Environmental Health and they are offering me an hourly wage of $27/hr with 401k, and health benefits. They say there is lots of room for career growth and could make way more if i work hard. Is this offer a bit low with someone with an MPH? Should I be looking somewhere else?
Thanks
So I have a BS in biology and am currently working in a lab. Iβm looking into getting a masters in industrial hygiene. I donβt know much about the field, but Iβm wondering what types of industries and work environments I would be in. Is it realistic to want to avoid working in the construction and mining industries? I live in a big mining state but I want to live to the Pacific Northwest and hopefully work in a health field or for a university or something. Is there a big job market in those types of industries? Also, does anyone know if the NIOSH funding applies to any online masters programs?
Looking to see how these classes are. Whatβs covered in them and how difficult are they?
Hello!
I recently have been offered a position for an entry level position in industrial hygiene. Itβs technically a training position as they put it. They want to start me off at $25/hr however, they do have benefits. That is the company offers health insurance where I do not need to pay out of pocket monthly and they cover that cost. Additionally, they match 4% of 401k contribution. There is also about 10% bonus every quarter from our wage. They cover the costs of Medicare and Social security for the taxes every paycheck. They project that I could make 6 figures in about 5 or less years of course depending on my work ethic and my skills in industrial hygiene. This would be my first real professional job in my field of environmental health but I canβt help but feel that the wage is low especially for coastal California. I have an MPH in Environmental health sciences which is why I am also hesitant to accept the position because it feels low with a masters degree. My dilemma now is that I currently make $20/hr at an easy contractor job with the county. However, there is no room for growth there unless I apply as an assistant to the environmental health specialist and that would take weeks or even months to start working if I am even accepted. What makes me want to apply as a trainee for an REHS is that county workers can get a pension. But moving up in the county feels like it can take forever and is based on who has been there the longest. Also, I feel like I will limit myself if I choose to be an REHS. Is this a good offer that I should not let pass up to build my skills in industrial hygiene/environmental health and safety?
Thank you ahead of time for reading and responding.
Is there any online programs that would prepare me to be a CIH? I am looking for a quality program and would like someone with experience to weigh in!
What industry does everyone work in? I currently work in occupational safety in construction and itβs miserable. I want to transition into industrial hygiene because I loved science and math in undergrad. But I refuse to go back into construction, but those seem to be the only openings right now. Do pharmaceutical, healthcare or other medical/science based industries hire a lot of industrial hygienists?
Hello all,
I'm a fresh college graduate with a degree in environmental, health, and safety applied sciences who will be starting full-time as an EHS Coordinator at the end of August. I would like to follow a career path in a specialized field of safety such as industrial hygiene or ergonomics (something that is in demand). I've had two internships where I've conducted air and noise monitoring along with two IH classes in college. I just graduated last week and will be sending out an application to the BCSP for my GSP within the next week. What would be the next step of the process if my end goal is to become an industrial hygienist? What information or insight can you all provide pertaining to a field in IH?
Thanks for any response~
I would like to explain a potential side business idea of mine. I am currently a Industrial hygienist (IH). For those of you not familiar with the IH profession we specialize in using monitoring equipment to sample the atmosphere for chemical, biological and physical hazards and using this data to determine employee exposure levels. This is a overly simplified definition of the occupation because obviously there are a ton of hazards in the occupational environment that OSHA requires the employer to regulate to prevent over exposure to employees. I believe I can market my knowledge and perform correct sampling in the workplace, then draw conclusions on the hazards and then create controls to prevent over exposure to employees or create a OSHA compliant safety program. My question is, how would I get started with this? Make a website? How would one do that? As for marketing , there is a lot of industry in my area and I think I could get my foot in the door by attending conferences or direct email. I can start small and with good work begin to grow. Has anyone in this group started their own consulting business? What are things I need to consider? Any advice in how to start this process is appreciated. I can provide more detail to any questions.
Hello,
Currently have been in the environmental health field side of things for the last 7 years. Have an interview as an IH in training at a refinery in the next few weeks. Anything that I can read/watch to help become even somewhat versed in this specific sector and the scope of work of an IH in a refinery? The specifics of the job say that it is directly under the supervision of a CIH with lots of training involved, but the interview, I'm told, is technical questions. I'd like to brush up and not sound like a complete idiot. Any help would be greatly valued. Thank you.
Hello,
For some background, I have am a recent grad with an MPH in Environmental Health.
I have an phone interview for an internship in industrial hygiene and occupational health. I was wondering what kind of questions could they possibly ask for an internship position?
Thanks!
Hello all,
Would anyone mind sharing their experiences and what the day to day work life is like? Is getting a job difficult and competitive for both stateside and overseas positions?
I'm planning to separate from AD Airforce in a year and 3 months. Hopefully will finish a BS in Occupational Health and Safety (less than 30 credits left). Will a background in the Fire Service help get a GS job? 7 years experience as a firefighter + 2 years as a Fire Inspector
Does anyone here work in academia as an industrial hygienist? There seems to be lots of overlap with public health and medical research. Why did you move into academia instead of industry?
Hello! I'm an undergrad public health major right now. I took an environmental health course this semester as part of my required degree courses and really loved it. I'm thinking about applying to MPH programs in Industrial Hygiene, but I'm not sure what people actually do in that career. For those of you in school for IH or currently working in the field, how did you decide it was right for you? What's your favorite/least favorite thing about your program/job? Do you have any advice for someone going into that field? Thank you!
I have a ton of spare time at my air monitoring job at the moment and I am thinking about using my spare time to teach myself about industrial hygiene. Any books/textbooks that youβd recommend? Thanks!
Hello, I am currently employed as a Environmental Consultant/Industrial Hygiene technician. Iβve heard that a common path for Industrial Hygienists is to start as a technician and move your way up, but Iβm curious to see as to how that process works. I am considering getting a graduate certificate in IH, which Iβm sure will help, but are there any other steps I need to take? Primarily I work on Asbestos and Lead, and I do plenty of School District related work, including Surveys, Air Sampling and Ventilation Assessments. Is this work sufficient for me to move into IH at some point, especially if I take on a PM role?
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
How does the University of Washingtonβs 18-month MS in Applied Occupational Hygiene program (which is NOT ABET accredited) compare to Industrial Hygiene programs at other colleges such at UMichigan, UMinnesota, UCinncinatti, and such? Can anyone help me understand if UWβs program stacks-up to highly respected and ABET accredited IH programs at other universities?

Hi everyone. On Mobile. Merry Christmas!
First things first, I (24F) have been dating βKyleβ (25M) for two months now. He has started to spend the night.
Kyle never grew up with pets, so my cat has been an βadjustmentβ to him (his words). My cat βCrumbβ (4M) is the most important aspect in my life right now. Like most cat parents, he rules the household. We are very close, since I found him abandoned on the side of the road (as a 3mo old kitten) and nursed him back to health.
Crumb is very docile, but hasnβt shown any affection or really interest in Kyle. I donβt force it. Crumb does as he does.
Lately, Kyle has been complaining about Crumb. I guess he walked into my bathroom to see Crumb rubbing his face against my toothbrush (I have one of the electric ones that stands). He was shocked and told me how disgusting it was. I laughed and said βyeah thatβs not great.β He demanded I get a new toothbrush (expensive) and I said no. I just put the toothbrush in a drawer.
Next, Kyle says he doesnβt like my nightly routine with Crumb. I give Crumb a kiss on the head, stomach and then face before he goes to sleep. He sleeps on my bedside table in a cat bed. If I donβt do this routine, he lays on me until I do. I know thatβs annoying, but thatβs how it has always been and I love doing it.
Well Kyle says I am unhygienic because of this. He says Crumb is dirty (he is inside only and I brush him every day) and even letting him sleep in the bedroom is gross and gets fur everywhere (it doesnβt, but Kyle isnβt even allergic so). I told him that I put the toothbrush away, but he told me that I took it as a joke and didnβt punish Crumb. I tried to explain that you canβt punish cats (nor would I want to in this scenario), but he wouldnβt hear it. He then went on to say that me kissing Crumb is disgusting, especially his face, and he wouldnβt ever kiss me if I kissed Crumb again. He asked me to put Crumb outside the room when he is over, or lock him in a βcrate.β
So I said, βokay bye.β Not only is Crumb 10000x more important to me, but I laughed in Kyleβs face about never kissing my cat again/keeping him locked.
This is where I may be the AH. Kyle told me that I was ruining our future and how mean I am for laughing at his concerns. I felt guilty so I asked a group of my friends and they were split. The pet owners laughed, the non-pet owners said I am in the wrong for not making Kyle feel more comfortable. They said that Kyle wasnβt asking me to get rid of Crumb,
... keep reading on reddit β‘I have some questions on the SB stain colorants and the base used for spray no wipe application.
