YSK that books in the public domain such as those in Project Gutenburg are more easily read and shared when they have been thoroughly proofread and formatted by the Distributed Proofreaders project.

The OCR scans of books in the public domain are pretty rough. To turn them into readable eBooks the scans need to be cleaned up. Misunderstood characters need to be corrected. Page headings and page numbers need to be deleted. Hyphenation added to the original for justification needs to be deleted. Fortunately Distributed Proofreaders is a project that takes the OCR files and corrects them so that they can forever be available as eBooks.

> Distributed Proofreaders provides a web-based method to ease the conversion of Public Domain books into e-books. By dividing the workload into individual pages, many volunteers can work on a book at the same time, which significantly speeds up the creation process. > > During proofreading, volunteers are presented with a scanned page image and the corresponding OCR text on a single web page. This allows the text to be easily compared to the image, proofread, and sent back to the site. A second volunteer is then presented with the first volunteer's work and the same page image, verifies and corrects the work as necessary, and submits it back to the site. The book then similarly progresses through a third proofreading round and two formatting rounds using the same web interface. > > Once all the pages have completed these steps, a post-processor carefully assembles them into an e-book, optionally makes it available to interested parties for 'smooth reading', and submits it to the Project Gutenberg archive.

New Podcast with an Interview with the director of Project Gutenberg Distributed Proofreaders

Hi,

I've just started a new podcast called Living in the Future. It's on iTunes and at www.livinginthefuture.rocks . In the second episode I've recorded an Interview with the director of Project Gutenberg Distributed Proofreaders (PGDP.NET) about some of their process and info about the project.

I think anyone interested in how Project Gutenberg gets it's texts should give a listen!

Project Gutenberg Distributed Proofreaders

http://www.pgdp.net/c/

This is a really nice little project, it's broken down into bite size chunks and organized with various experience levels so it's completely beginner friendly, and if you enjoy it there are plenty of paths to learn and 'level-up' your abilities, allowing you to tackle more complex tasks.

Compare a page of OCR text with the original scan and fix any transcription errors which might have occurred, a simple task but it can be really interesting and a great way of discovering interesting texts and seeing the various literary styles.

Open to all languages, although for obvious reasons English is the most prevalent.

The altruistic warm feeling you get should come from the fact you're helping to create a book which will be available free to every single person on the planet, probably until the collapse of human civilization! That's right, when you put a version of a book on guttenberg it's added into the global storehouse of knowledge which anyone in the world can access, thus it's like you're giving a copy of that book to every single person in the world! what a generous and hard working person you are! what a boon to the human race! thank you, from me and thank you from the billions of people in the future who will be able to read this book because of your relaxing half-hour before bed.

[paid] looking for a proofreader for my graphic novel

I’m looking for someone to proofread my graphic novel. It’s about 235 pages of art, 250ish total including chapter dividers, etc. The pages are fairly light on dialogue for the most part.

I need someone to check for grammatical errors, basic continuity errors (such as clothing changing from panel to panel) and lettering mishaps (word balloon pointed at the wrong character, etc.) I am NOT looking for story editing, dialogue refinement, etc. This is just looking for technical errors.

Comment your email and rate if you’re interested, thanks!

Machine Learning vs Distributed Systems jobs in Canada

I will be coming to Canada for my MS ML program, which would allow me to take 1-2 elective courses outside the ML department. I am planning to take Distributed Systems and Databases to get a well-balanced education.

I wanted to know how both of these subfields of CS compare with each other in terms of career progression, salary and growth opportunities. I am particularly interested in working in the FAANGM offices present in cities like Vancouver/Toronto/Montreal, which usually tend to pay more.

From what I saw in levels.fyi, SWE with distributed systems knowledge are paid more, but I wanted to get a second opinion from people already working in Canada.

During a Zoom meeting, he reviewed my writing and provided feedback and editing notes.
