Is there a rule thumb for the frequency you should ‘jiggle’ something to detach it from a surface?

Say I have an object I want to detach from a surface, removing plaque on teeth with an ultrasound toothbrush, separating a pancake from a pan by shaking, or knocking down a building in an earthquake.

There will be some resonant frequency. How do I calculate this from sheer stress/strain? Do materials have comparable sheer stress/strain to the point where I can rule of thumb guess how fast to jiggle it based on just its size?

Retreat, Hell - Episode 18

A/N: Hey, guys! Finally got this episode hammered out! We're into Act IV and back on the offensive!

This episode is a bit short, for what they have been lately, only 8600 words or so, but we're getting back into the action.

I've got a good handle on what happens in Episodes 19 and 20, decent outlines for both, and 17.5 and 18.5 half-episodes, though future updates will continue to be slow. I'm moving at the end of the month, and work will continue to be busy right up until I leave. Hopefully I'll have everything set up and settled into my new place by the end of February, and I'll be able to get into a more regular posting schedule after that. The new job is a much lighter workload, and I should have a lot more free time to do all the things I want to do outside of work.

I've got some maps of Gahla that I've been working on, too, that I'll be sharing here at some point. They still need some work before I'm happy with them, and the map files are also on my desktop which is on its way to a container ship with the rest of my household goods, so it'll be bit before I'm able to share them.

Once I get settled into my new place, I'll also be looking to start commissioning character and story art again, since I'll have more time to reach out to and work with artists.

In the meantime, though, here is the next episode!

“Three fucking weeks.”

“Say again, Sergeant?” Meyer turned to look at Bradford as she stared over the hesco wall.

“It’s been three fucking weeks, sir, since we finished getting this FOB set up, and we’re still sitting here.” She snorted. “It’s bad enough we haven’t seen any fucking Keeblers since the first week of the war. We’ve built eight FOBs chained out over five hundred kilometers without seeing a single elf. Now we’ve been twiddling our thumbs up our asses for so long, the goddamn Army’s caught up.” She waved at the latest in a line of trucks and Humvees rolling up to the gate in the compound’s southern wall.

“Disappointed the elves aren’t giving us any resistance, Sergeant?”

“Sir,” she said, turning away from the wall. “We’re Marines. We exist to fight and kill the enemy, and right now we don

Writer's Note: Fleshing out the city a little bit. Gixelle causes a bit of trauma.

Plus some other sneaky beaky stuff happening.

Enjoy whatever holiday you celebrate. I'll see y'all again after.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After getting Steve and Maxel set up in their pens, Gixelle offered to give James a simplified tour of the city. Steve seemed incredibly happy to be in a drake pen without his muzzle for a change, and James couldn't help but smile when he saw Steve following Maxel from his side of the wall. Their pens were right next to each other and he had a feeling that Maxel was going to get annoyed as the night went on. But Gixelle had assured him that Maxel could handle herself, plus she'd keep Steve from using his fire.
The city's idea of how a port should work was absolutely nothing like what James had expected.
Instead of simply having piers extended out into the ocean, with a few dry docks here and there, Jadesport instead had a massive "U" shaped canal that arced through the city from one end to the other. There were a few off shoots of this canal, but the main curve was the primary waterway. Instead of ships tying off and offloading their shipments and people like normal, the ships passing through Jadesport would instead travel through the canal at their slowest possible speed. A series of cranes and nets, resting on large jade and marble arches, were in place. This allowed the cranes to grab larger shipments and move them off the ships as they moved, and then move them to their intended recipients as needed. Smaller, less fragile, shipments would simply be thrown over the side of the ship into the nets, each of which was labeled, and their recipients could retrieve them at their leisure.
James was amazed at the simple efficiency of it. He and Gixelle sat at a small cafe drinking ale and eating sandwiches for almost an hour as James watched a large ship pass through the canal. Its crew had it completely unloaded before they'd even reached what Gixelle had pointed out as the halfway point in the arch. Once they reached that halfway point a new set of cranes began loading new cargo onto the ship for it to take back out to other ports. As a result; a slow, seemingly leisurely, float down the five mile l
#Alien-Nation Chapter 78 (Award IV)
Amilita led me from the bathrooms, back outside to where the catering was, and true to our prediction, the cameras followed closely, bobbing along as we walked down the front stairs together.
“So what now?”
She said a word I didn’t recognize, not even looking down at me, instead forward as we strode past where the cameras were waiting, and back out into the sun.
“Sorry, what was that word?” I asked politely.
“I’m told it’s like your version of ‘Smile and wave’,” Amilita supplied, stopping at last once we were on the steps, looking out over the enormous grass lawn and the afternoon’s proceedings. I made a quick note that the table of books had been completely picked through. “I think Natalie just ate too much and got nervous. She doesn’t have the…” The Officer searched for words before settling on: “...the toughest constitution. I’m sure she will be fine.”
I forced myself to calm down, and gazed down at my new omni-pad. I wanted nothing more than to run back to the bathroom, to hell with everything else, but… it was kind of true. I wanted to point out how she’d trucked Jordan way back at the track party, but it was true that she was absolutely dwarfed by almost every other Shil’ in attendance. Was she naturally given to panic? How much did I really know about her?
I felt a little warmth in my chest, remembering how she’d held me at the covered bridge.
I know enough.
I spoke the words ‘translate Smile and Wave’ in English into my omni-pad, holding down a button to activate the microphone. I watched it automatically pull up its ‘translation’ feature, and the device pulse in its bright, rainbow colors from the center. The information came up much faster than on the one I’d been given by Talay, and even more impressive, the translation was fully nuanced, rather than a direct series of translations of ‘smile’ ‘and’ ‘wave.’ The middle framed a phonetic sounding for me, with all the little nitty-gritty details of the word’s etymology underneath. This was all way, way more information than I’d had access to before.
I experimentally tried the word out silently a few
The Long War's Newcomers: The Grand Unknown
“Ok, what are you doing, and why do you want to go to the hub to get on a transport?”
Cavla was unhappy with the request that Frost had made.
“Let’s put it like this; do you want to be a part in Human scientific history? Because you will if you guys come with me.” Frost wanted them to come with him, but Cav seemed opposed to the idea of deserting their post. Despite the fact that nobody would be able to come towards them within the next 24 hours.
“Just what are you doing?”
“The first manned Human slipspace craft just popped up in the middle of nowhere after 50 years. We only got a ping from it, but we know that it exists. I have been ordered by the UEAC to go. I hate to say it, but that kinda goes over your orders.” Frost explained.
“Ok, that I understand. It’s the 50 year old ship that doesn’t make sense.” Cav was obviously less upset now, and definitely more curious.
“Yeah, I don’t know about that either. Luckily, we only like to change ports if we are making money, so the Human docking port on the transport up there should work with the Human docking port out there.” Frost hoped what he had said was truth. It was based around truth, but the docking ports have changed a little bit over the years. Hopefully the VAL ports never changed.
“Hmm.”
Frost stepped into the armory and started to remove his normal combat gear. “Come on, it’ll be a good look into Human spaceflight history. Besides, I’m not kidding, we will be in Human scientific history.”
“Fine, I’ll run it by the others, see if they want to.”
“Great! You guys will need to be in EVA suits.” Frost was fairly happy with that result.
“Isn’t it pressurized?” she questioned.
“Fifty years Cav, and I’m gonna guess that most of those are without maintenance.”
“Oh… You think…” she trailed off.
“Yeah… Whatever. Go get the rest.” Frost continued to remove his combat gear. His suit was seeing a lot of use as a personal and communal heater, so he had to let it charge. It was still hooked up to the wall, chugging away at the power banks as it charged. He looked at the charge in the suit’s cells.
82%
Should be enough’ he thought to himself as he detached the cable from the suit. He raised the upper part of the suit on the loading dock enough for him to slip into the bottom portion. Pulling the upper part down and locking in the seals, he detached himself from the wall. The weight of the suit was taken off of him as the assisting endoskeleton powered on. Weighing in at around 290 pounds in the g
Writer's note: James is your huckleberry.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

For James and the orc thing, nothing else existed at this moment in time.

Flames raged outside the simple walls of the camp, it burned trees and raiders with equal ferocity. Members of the raider group scrambled every which way, grabbing weapons and mounting the terrible heavy limbed beasts like the one James was currently struggling on top of. Some of them tried to grab water and smothering devices to put out the now spreading flames. Horns blared, and somewhere outside the walls a great battle was occurring. James would have heard yelling, screams of pain and rage, the clattering of weapons and armor, and great beastly roars of anger and death.

But right now, all he could hear, all he could see, was the blood pounding through his veins, and the rage and fear in the face of the bastard whose life he struggled to end with the heavy chain he'd wrapped around its throat.

For these two beings, locked in this particular struggle to the death, only the other participant existed.

James strained every muscle of his body, his legs straddling the back of the terrible monster that his opponent was riding, his arms pulling at the chain with every ounce of strength they had. The monster was actually helping the effort, the sudden additional rider had startled it, the fact that its wrist had just been cut deeply and that the blade was stuck in that wrist had hurt and scared it. As a result, it was thrashing about, forcing the choking rider to keep a hold of its reins with its left hand. The rider's right hand was up, barely keeping the chain from having full purchase on its neck, unable to engage James fully as a result.

They struggled like that for long seconds. James felt an impact on his right shoulder blade but ignored it. If he was hurt, he could deal with it later. Right now, he had to kill this creature by any means necessary. The Orc thing snarled at him, and James snarled right back. James lifted his left leg up and planted his knee on the rider's back, using it to add leverage and strength to the attempted choking.

As he did this, the ridden monster's back right leg came up, its odd three digited hand grasping for James's leg. Between his new position

An Outcast In Another World (Subtitle: Is 'Insanity' A Racial Trait?) [Fantasy, LitRPG] - Chapter 92 (Book 3 Chapter 20)

“There you are,” Zamira hissed.

Meyneth settled into her chair, beckoned Zamira inside her house, and waited as the Swordmaster stomped towards her. Granted, Zamira was more so stepping with slightly greater force than usual, but by her standards it was tantamount to a boar charging at full speed. It was mildly fascinating, the way her face struggled to retain its usual calm stoicism. Meyneth knew that she shouldn’t have found the sight as amusing as she did, and it took some effort to suppress the chuckle rising to the top of her throat. Zamira’s countenance was such a departure from her usual bearing that it bordered on absurdity.

Then Zamira’s eyes flashed with outrage, and Meyneth remembered that those slow to anger often exploded like a stack of Firebombs when finally pushed to their limit. She considered fleeing, but she’d delayed this meeting long enough already, and Zamira was faster regardless. Consigning herself to a potential demise, Meyneth placed her hands in her lap and kept a neutral expression as Zamira stopped mere inches in front of her, somehow managing to look down on Meyneth despite their height difference.

“Why have you been avoiding me?” Zamira asked, in a pointed tone. “It has been days since...since you...”

Red crept into her cheeks. “What in the name of all that is good and gracious were you thinking?!”

“That you are frustrated in more ways than one,” Meyneth replied, serene as the night sky. As long as she kept to the script, she might just make it through this conversation with her head still attached to her shoulders. “Furthermore, you were stagnating. A push was needed.”

“There’s an order to these things!” Zamira took a deep breath to calm herself. It didn’t seem to help very much. “As inexperienced as I am in the ways of romance, even I am aware that first impressions are paramount. You must put your best foot forward, endear yourself to them, gradually reveal your inner self, and express genuine intent when the time is right.”

Or lay everything bare and get on with it, Meyneth thought. That’s what worked for her. Granted, neither she nor any of her partners had expressed the slightest intention in forming emotional bonds with each other, but it wouldn’t have changed her approach regardless. Although she was forced to admit that the nature of her entanglements was due in large part to her conversational deficiencies, as well as the naked truth that no one in Dragonkin territory would have accepted real romantic o

10 Tips to Elegantly Play Chopin on the Piano

If you’ve ever wanted to play Chopin on the piano or need some advice for his more difficult works, this article is for you. The first 5 points cover some of the techniques you need to master to play Chopin on the piano, and the second 5 points focus on expression, how to take your playing from being just note correct to a piece of beauty.

Chopin’s work is beloved for its depth of expression that is just built in to the music itself. These five points will help you tap into that and show you how you can begin to interpret the music in your own unique way.

1. Choose Pieces Around the Right Level for You

This might seem like a obvious one, but the tricky part comes with knowing what level you are as a pianist and what level a piece is.
The goal should be to work on a few pieces at a time: one that you can nail in a couple of weeks, one that will take a month, and one that will likely take longer. You can use level numbers to help you figure that out, but it’s also important to pay attention to the specific skills that you struggle with the most, as that will add learning time onto pieces that have those skills (at least until you get comfortable with them!).

Examples of skills would be fast arpeggios, chromatic scales, homophonic (chordal) playing, large leaps, things like that.

While you can use the many level numbering systems out there to serve as a sort of guide, you do need to also look through a piece and pay attention to the skills you’ll need to play it.

If you haven’t played any scales at all ever, it’s probably not a great idea to play the Etude in A Minor, Op. 25 No. 11, “Winter Wind,” for example. It’s full of fast arpeggios and scales that go up and down the entire length of the piano.

Etude in A Minor, Op. 25 No. 11, “Winter Wind”

If you’re new to Chopin, Alfred’s has a great book of his easier pieces: Chopin: An Introduction to His Piano Works.

Additionally, you can visit IMSLP.org (free, public domain sheet music—just don’t click on the ads…I’ve had people do that and given their credit card info away…you won’t need to enter any payment info on IMSLP). They have a handy sort by instrument and difficulty level, so here’s [that page for piano](https://imslp.org/wiki/Special:Diff

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
