Tonight is the night of the fourth of the 2020 Democratic Party Primary debates in Westerville, Ohio at Otterbein University.
##When?
Tonight, 15 October 2019 from 8PM to 11...-ish PM Eastern, if the past is any indication we tend to roll over time.
##Where?
Ohio! Which is a swing state! But also broadcast on CNN, CNN.com and the NYTimes.comβs homepage, as well as the CNN app for iPhone/Android if you can't get to Ohio in time.
##Who?
Twelve candidates cleared the polling and donation thresholds the DNC maintained from September for this round of debates. Due to the DNC maintaining this debate as a one-night affair despite there being more than 10 candidates, the following luminaries (in no particular order) will be on-stage, and this is the largest Presidential debate stage in American history
##Why?
These people are all running for the Democratic Party nomination for President! They're going to tell us their opinions on issues facing the nation and be asked questions by the moderators to which they will respond with answers, ideally.
##Who else will be there?
The following reporters will be moderating the night's events:
##Who won't be there?
All of the other people running for President that didn't clear the thresholds for the debate- candidates had to hit 2 percent in four recent polls from a specific list of organizations, and get donations from 130,000 people. It is worth noting that the qualifying threshold between last month's debate and this month's debate did not change; however the threshold for next month's debate has been raised and at present only 8 candidates have cleared that floor.

We had a great thread for last month's debate that ha

Nothing personal I've just noticed people rarely read my intro and this is a post-debate thread so it doesn't matter much. It was however hosted by PBS and POLITICO who did an amazing job, in my highly editorialized opinion.
##When?
It already happened.

##Who else will was there?
Do you really care? Lisa Desjardins looked amazing last night- but you guys know I love my strawberry-blondes. Otherwise a bunch of random people from PBS, basically.
##Who won't be there?
Cory Booker, Tulsi Gabbard, other people... me- but only because Lisa is married and my fiancee gets weird when I get into women older than her. And that's the only reason I'm not there, of course.
##Why are you posting this?
I'd like to have some discussion from those who watched the debate (and especially those that watched along with me in Discord tonight, thanks for hanging with me while the better half is airborne to her parents' house! I need people to spend time with until I go join her on Sunday!) about the high points, low points, or anything interesting we gleaned this past night.
My 30,000 ft view? This doesn't move the needle a lot. We saw some great cross-bench attacks, Buttigieg coming for Warren, Sanders and Biden debuting their continued 'old man rap battle' situation, Klobuchar reminding us all that she's incredibly boring even though she's the one person we could probably all agree would do a great job... Steyer is old and way too rich. Yang should go ho

He tells the crowd that he is considering going to the Democratic candidates debate so he can "make sure that the Socialist Democrats stop lying about the great job I'm doing. In fact, we should ALL go there and keep them honest!".
Of course, Trump himself hasn't committed to going (he hasn't ruled it out, either), but his followers begin to think it would be a great idea to disrupt the debate. What would be the fallout?

Hey guys. I'll be dropping a day-of debate discussion thread but wanted to get some generalized facts (and lots of my own nonsense opinions) out here to set the stage for this coming Tuesday.
##Quick Facts:
The October debate will be hosted in Westerville, Ohio at Otterbein University on October 15 2019 on one night with twelve candidates on the same stage. This event will feature the 10 candidates from the September debate with the addition of 2- Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) and Billionaire philanthropist Tom Steyer who will be attending his first debate of the cycle.
The debate floor was unchanged between September and October, hence the inclusion of the two additional candidates. The event will be hosted by CNN and the New York Times, start at 8PM ET, and be moderated by Erin Burnett, Anderson Cooper, and NYT editor Marc Lacey.
##The Last Month, editorialized:
In the past 30 days since the previous debate there's been a lot going on. Ignoring President Trump's... stuff, there has been internal movement of the candidates as well.
Taking a look at September pre-debate polling data found here (Quinnipiac, because reasons) shows a very different calculus compared to more recent results (question 2 for both):
Former Vice President Biden has been supplanted by Senator Warren at the top of the pack, but only by very thin margins. Currently Warren 29-26 for a 3 point gap, down from Biden 32-19 for a 13 point gap in September. We can speculate pretty wildly for reasons as to why this is the case (and I encourage it, since I don't have a lot of answers there).
Senator Sanders has seemingly very clearly reached his ceiling of 15-16% support among the party, which seems to be consistent if nothing else (very on brand for him). Sanders experienced a cardiac incident (AP) in the time since the last debate and was hospitalized but is apparently back at the campaign and will be in attendance at the debate.
Now that we're done with the old folks' home, the rest of the stack's comparatively low movement is probably more telling than not:
Hey y'all, I may not be able to leave work early enough tomorrow to go home and watch the Democratic Presidential debate so I'm wondering if there is a place on campus to watch it? I guess I can always stream it from my office, but it may be good to hear how other people react to it (with only 6 candidates on stage, we *might* get some actual debating going on).
I imagine some student organizations may have some kind of events, so I'd appreciate if anyone can let me know of such events (and if staff members are welcome to attend).
In yesterdayβs presidential debate, CBS and company asked the candidates about repression by China against the Uighurs and in Hong Kong, but nothing about the recent wave of deadly repression against anti-neoliberal protests in Chile, Ecuador, Honduras, Haiti, Lebanon, Iraq, Colombia or the deadly racist governments of Bolivia and Brazil. Nor did the press take up on Bernie's statement about excessive military spending. Nor did it take up on Bernie's and Elizabeth Warren's opposition to Pete Buttigieg and Biden's closed-door fund raising with millionaires, allowing other candidates to attack Warren for being divisive.
CNN classified Bernie as the debateβs leading βloserβ because he failed to go beyond attacking the billionaire class. The statement is deceptive because Bernie's discourse attacking corporate wealth and abuse has struck a responsive chord among skeptics, many of whom often do not vote. Bernie pointed that out last night when he said in response to accusations of being divisive and jeopardizing the effort to defeat Trump in 2020: 'I'll tell you how to beat Trump,β he said. βYou do it by animating those who donβt vote.β (Heβs talking about 46 percent of the electorate who didnβt vote in 2016.)

All of the other people running for President that didn't clear the thresholds for the debate- candidates had to hit 3 percent in four recent polls from a specific list of organizations or 5 percent in two DNC approved polls from the four earliest primary and caucus states, and get donations from 165,000 people. It is worth noting as a former candidate that is no longer in the running since last month's debates; Robert Francis O'Rourke will obviously not be on stage, however Julian Castro will not be on stage but has continued his campaign.

I figured it'd be cool for us to have a debate live discussion thread since we're a pretty fun tight-knit group of folks that enjoy talking politics and like talking politics in real-time! The mod staff said it'd be alright so here we are. Come 8PM ET I'll be hanging here dropping commentary and asking questions and would love for you guys to join me!
