From zero to German Goethe C2:GDS in 9 months: my journey, tips and tricks (Part 1) /r/languagelearning x-post

*I started writing this article more than a half year ago, then I stopped for a long time, just to come back to it lately. Sorry for the mistakes, but I just did not want to go over this Leviathan of an article again*

Hey,

Two weeks ago, I have passed C2 certificate in German Language - Goethe-Zertifikat C2: GDS. (GDS = Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom ~ The Highest German Language Diploma).

https://cdn.imageupload.workers.dev/T0Gsv77L_goethe.jpg

Some quick facts:

- I started studying by myself German in September 2020 and I have written Goethe C2 exam on 10.06.21 (9 months),

- I did not attend any structured course, but I had ordered 87 hours on Italki in order to practice speaking; the average cost of class was around 7-10$ per hour, so a total of ~800-1000$ was spent.

- I had pretty busy life beside learning German – I was 5th year Med Student,

- I did not spend any time whatsoever in German-speaking country – the first time I had an opportunity to speak German in a ‘real conversation’ was in the day before the exam,

- I have never used a grammar book,

On the other hand:

- I am used to learning and grinding a lot,

- I have language learning experience.

I will try to write this post in such a way that it could be useful for other language learners – to share my experience, the obstacles I have encountered and tricks I have invented in order to overcome them. You can just see below what could interest you and just read this part.

I will structure this post in the following way, according to the ‘stages’ I went through: (1) groundwork, (2) functional efficiency, (3) ‘fluency’, (4) exam-specific preparation. In each of those I will try to elucidate what techniques and materials I have used and some useful tricks I have used.

The techniques and workarounds could be extrapolated to other languages, so those are the problems I have worked around:

  1. Groundwork – the grind – ‘dry’ learning without much use of a ‘real language’ – September/October 2020

a) Learning vocabulary – what to learn, how to learn

a.a) How do I learn the gender of the noun?

b) ‘Micropronounciation’ – correct pronounciations within a single word

c) Which grammar (and HOW) should I learn?

d) What about cases?

e) How to find time to study? How much should I study?

f) How to remember what I have learned?

  1. Functional efficiency – the fun begins here – starting to ha

Question from an English speaker about Indonesian language: What is the real difference between henti and berhenti?

Hi,

English speaker here.

I don't really see any substantive difference between the two. Something like berhasil vs hasil I understand, cause hasil (results) is a base noun and ber- makes it into a verb (to make results, i.e. to succeed) right?

But henti itself is a verb right? it means to stop. So what is the difference between berhenti and henti?

Thanks!

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

My two cents on: The Big Finale: Season 4, Episode 10 “Grass on the Streets and Weeds on the Rooftops”

My two cents on: The Big Finale: Season 4, Episode 10 “Grass on the Streets and Weeds on the Rooftops”

Before I begin, can I just say WOW! I loved it! Yes, we still have many questions but it was great!

-

Beth thinking of running away from her problems with her Dad, I understand her urge to do so, but so glad Rip made her stop and talk with him and see the seriousness of what she was contemplating…especially how that if you break a promise…it stays broken.

I’m also glad she swallowed her hurt feelings and pride to talk with John about their fight. She still thinks it’s all about Summer when that was the least thing it was about.

From that point on in the show, it seems like Beth is standing on a tip of a blade and or is acting like there will be no tomorrow, where she’ll either be dead or in prison, so she has some things thought out and others are spur of the moment – trying to live the rest of her life all in one day.

Beth’s response to Carter was very hurtful…I think she’s trying to be tough on him as her Mom was to her…but forgetting what those wounds did to her or turning a blind eye to the results - - of Beth being Beth. (Can I say the actors Kelly Reilly and Finn Little are amazing here? As is the entire cast!)

As a preview alluded to, Beth does ask questions of Walker about prison and I agree with Walker’s response to Rip about “I think she’s going to kill someone. You can tell that Walker was leery in talking with Beth with Rip looking on…he didn’t want to “poke the bear” now that things seem to be on a low boil within the bunkhouse.

Beth or Caroline “Who’s The Bigger Bear Here?”: I think Caroline thought she had “found” Beth out, but Beth wasn’t trying too hard to cover her actions, so she was actually bored with Caroline’s “gotcha Beth” moment. Caroline’s words “And you know what you’ve done? You’ve made it personal for me. I don’t care how much we spend or how long it takes, I’M GONNA PUT A PUBLIC RESTROOM WHERE YOUR F@@@KING HOUSE IS. I’M GONNA CHOP DOWN EVERY TREE AND DAM EVERY CREEK. I AM GOING TO RAPE YOUR FUCKING RANCH TO DEATH. And you, you little b@@@ch, are going to prison. Needless to say, you’re fired.” I believe will come back to haunt if Beth recorded that conversation. Beth did everything as she had planned and wasn’t going to be at Market Equities long. I think she poked the Market Equities Bear till she got what she wanted. Which was Caroline saying all she did and seeing Beth touch her screen immediately after

3 years after my (32) husband (36) left me while I was pregnant, I couldn’t be more thankful he left.

Just a msg for anyone going through a separation…

I used to hate hearing it, but it’s true: time will heal, as long as you put in the work to emerge from this.

I was pregnant with our first child when my ex-husband left. He told me he fell in love with someone else. I was on an overseas work assignment at that time. Turns out, he and his gf also lived together in our conjugal home while I was away.

To say that it was difficult is an understatement. I had to resort to rationalization to survive. What helped me was this: that I should not allow this person to have control over me any longer.

And so I decided not to cry and to get angry anymore. I decided to give space for other things that merit a space in my life.

It’s easier said than done though, but it definitely will get better. Time will heal, but I also honored its power to heal and made steps to honor that.

I am still traumatized though and I don’t think I’ll ever be in a relationship again. I just don’t want to take the risk anymore.

Sending virtual hugs to anyone going through a tough time. Thank you for letting me share this :)

City Slickers and Hayseeds, Chapter 27

Setting by u/BlueFishcake

Brelak stood in front of the door, his stomach churning. It had been a few days since the disastrous end of the Festival of Colors, and guilt had been eating at his mind the entire time. He’d only put this off as long as he had because he didn’t want to pile even more ill news onto the McClendon family.

“Papa,’ Solanna’s voice was pleading. “We really don’t have to do this!”

“You would do well to keep your mouth shut, Solanna.” Ny’xie growled at her blood-daughter. “You have no one to blame for this but yourself.”

“But, mom!” She protested. “It was his idea!”

Brelak spun to face her, his eyes wide with anger. “Don’t you dare try to blame this on him! I raised you better than to claim he was asking for it!”

Solanna’s chin quivered as she recoiled from the fury on her father’s face. She took a breath, hesitated, and then hung her head with a miserable nod.

Brelak turned back to the door, squared his shoulders, and knocked.

A moment later, the door opened to reveal Mrs. McClendon smiling at the three of them. “Well, this is a lovely surprise! What brings you three by our humble home?”

Brelak forced a smile onto his face. “Good afternoon, Jennifer. I’m afraid we have something rather… delicate to discuss.”

Jennifer’s brow furrowed, but she nodded. “Won’t you all come in?”

As she led them into the house, Brelak couldn’t help but notice how cramped it felt. There was a bench by the door with shelves built into it that were filled with shoes. A coat rack stood beside it, holding plastic looking jackets in bright yellows and oranges, in addition to the closet that was built into the wall. Nearly every square foot of wall space was taken up by something, varying between bookshelves that reached nearly to the ceiling, framed pictures of the children that marched back through the years, or examples of art from across a wide variety of styles.

“I apologize for the mess,” Jennifer said as she hefted a strange looking contraption that appeared to be made mostly of brown leather off the table and set it on the floor. “Would you like some tea or coffee?”

Brelak glanced at Ny’xie as

Question about korean verbs radicals

So hi, I'm a brazilian and I've been trying to learn korean. I'd say I'm still at the basic level, but I'm already learning verb conjugation (present, past and future). I'm having a bit of a hard time but I'll manage, it's just that it's too much info to handle.

Anyways, I'm learning verb conjugation with honorifics and it's all good but I have a question: what exactly is the radical of a verb in the korean language?

For example: 사랑하다 is "to love", right? But what exactly is the radical here? Is it 사랑 or is it 사랑하? Because I've learned throughout my studies (and I might be wrong) that the base radical of a verb can become a noun. So if 사랑 is "love" why do we conjugate with the 하? For example, 사랑해 in the informal low form.

Thanks in advance!
