I wanted to know how much middle eastern or west Asian and North African DNA is actually included in the Sicilian genome, how accurate are companies at detecting this and are they correct?

Dodecanese Greeks today are the most outlying group of people native to Greece. They have the least Slavic ancestry of all Greeks from Greece, as such being almost entirely untouched from the mainland’s influence, which makes them outlying even for Aegean islands standards. They’re also marginally more outlying than Calabrians, though they are very close overall when you compare them on Global25, Gedmatch and PCAs.

Here’s why I completely disagree with the idea that mainland Greeks were ever close to the Dodecanese, en masse, for an extended period of time.

1. Mycenaean samples aren’t similar to Dodecanese. Mycenaeans lacked Slavic and didn’t have much Steppe input but they weren’t highly MENA, just a mixture of Sardinian-like farmer ancestry and Caucasus DNA. Similar to other nearby samples of their period.

2. This makes mainland Greeks almost 50% Slavic (Polish/Ukrainian like) at the upper extreme which suggests a massive Slavic contribution to mainland Greeks that is nearing half for some regions. If you try modeling mainland Greeks as Dodecanese + Polish, you’re looking at 30% MINIMUM for the least Slavic areas, and 40%+ for the most, which is about 10% higher than what is realistic.

3. Dodecanese get recent ancestor locations from eastern Anatolia, Turkey and sometimes even Cyprus, which only happens if the population movements are fairly recent. This suggests to me that the Dodecanese may not have always been so outlying.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

I am not asking this to sound critical but I find that many people have a very… bizarre view of what Greeks look like and their genetics and I am trying to figure out where this originated.

A subset of the Greek population… those of the Aegean islands and Cyprus are certainly within this spectrum. As you move through the Aegean islands they are definitely closely related to southern Italians, some more than others, and by the time you get to the Dodecanese they show strong genetic similarities to the most outlying Italians as well as to Cyprus/Levant on the other end. There are also Pontic Greeks, who are a Caucasian people who were settled in Greece proper during the population exchange with Turkey and they are genetically closer to Armenians, Iranians, Mesopotamian people.

The vast majority of Greeks however, live on the mainland, where the Slavic ancestry can get as high as 35% and apart from isolate areas like Tsakonia and Mani, the population is closely related to Albanians, Bulgarians and Macedonians. The phenotypes of many Greeks from places like Thrace, Epirus, Thessaly and Macedonia show clearly the influence of Eastern Europe and you would not look at them and feel you were looking at Calabrians let alone Levantines or Armenians.

Genetics can provide invaluable information on the ancestry of the current inhabitants of Cyprus. A Y-chromosome analysis was performed to (i) determine paternal ancestry among the Greek Cypriot (GCy) community in the context of the Central and Eastern Mediterranean and the Near East; and (ii) identify genetic similarities and differences between Greek Cypriots (GCy) and Turkish Cypriots (TCy). Our haplotype-based analysis has revealed that GCy and TCy patrilineages derive primarily from a single gene pool and show very close genetic affinity (low genetic differentiation) to Calabrian Italian and Lebanese patrilineages. In terms of more recent (past millennium) ancestry, as indicated by Y-haplotype sharing, GCy and TCy share much more haplotypes between them than with any surrounding population (7–8% of total haplotypes shared), while TCy also share around 3% of haplotypes with mainland Turks, and to a lesser extent with North Africans. In terms of Y-haplogroup frequencies, again GCy and TCy show very similar distributions, with the predominant haplogroups in both being J2a-M410, E-M78, and G2-P287. Overall, GCy also have a similar Y-haplogroup distribution to non-Turkic Anatolian and Southwest Caucasian populations, as well as Cretan Greeks. TCy show a slight shift towards Turkish populations, due to the presence of Eastern Eurasian (some of which of possible Ottoman origin) Y-haplogroups. Overall, the Y-chromosome analysis performed, using both Y-STR haplotype and binary Y-haplogroup data puts Cypriot in the middle of a genetic continuum stretching from the Levant to Southeast Europe and reveals that despite some differences in haplotype sharing and haplogroup structure, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots share primarily a common pre-Ottoman paternal ancestry.

Before the Slavic settlement of Greece and the influence of people such as Arvanites, Vlachs, and so on... which modern population is the best proxy for what mainland Greeks were like genetically?

My guess is it would be people in isolated parts of the Peloponnese such as Laconia and Tsakonia.

I do not accept the commonly-stated view that the Dodecanese, who are the most genetically Near Eastern of all the island chains are a good proxy for mainland Greece at any point in history.
